It does not. Evasive maneouvers that you only get vs HK type ships doubles your effective dodge.

I would not put it quite like that.

I LOVE knowledge, and I love Xpz, and gatekeeping difficulty in this way is unproductive, that is why I love helping people and discussing game mechanics to learn more about it.

Case in point: dogfights. I could not wrap my head around dogfights or whether or not I stood a chance in the airgame, and the knowledge about it in the community had gaps. I had to actually read the game's fucking source code to understand wtf was going on. (Did you know enemy craft size affects only gun accuracy but not pilot or hull accuracy? Bet you didn't. Did you know that, as opposed to your 50-100% dmg roll, the enemy does 0-100% dmg roll? Bet you didn't.)

Reading a game's source code is not something that should be expected, lest you be a vanilla soyboy, wtf.

I don't like self-congratz kinds of pats on one's backs gatekeeping modern game sensibilities. Have some perspective.

Xpiratez is difficult to play like a modern CRPG, without an insane anount of metaknowledge.

If you go into it and expect casualties to be rare, or that there will be no disastrously punishing happenings, yeh, it is hard. If you go into it and attempt to YOLO it, it also gets hard because it is so long, so lucky streaks will run out.

Playing it in a slow but deliberate manner, treating units as expendable, and going on even after serious setbacks is easy.

That said, OXCE itself is a very complex engine that also adds complexity to the mod's complexity.

There's really no argument to be made that the game is easy. It is not easy to learn (especially if one never played 1993 xcom), it is not easy to swallow psychological defeats like losing a favourite gal, or a base holding all your treasure to crackdowns, and it is not easy to unlearn modern games streamlining.

I do not think you have to do any editing from N5 to N6.

Last edit was for L10 to N1.

What you always need to do is ALWAYS make a fresh install. Download the mod from moddb, put in the UFO folder, and copy the config file and your save game. That is it.

Don't be sorry for savescum, play how you want, it's single player, though there are easier ways to get ahead, and savescumming might get you into bad mindsets. Well, no matter, let's look at your save.

I looked, things look wrong. On which Xpz version you played this save? This version looks...OLD. Like, at least one year out of date old. Maybe 2 years.

  You should be trying to head to School Graduation, and the only thing OBVIOUSLY holding you back are bounties.

You have not bothered to do any Bounty Hunting past the very start. You are missing Bounty Hunting Badge C and B, and also pretty much all the prizes except a very few at the start. Without getting deep in the weeds, you need at least favours from the big 3 Bounty players, Jack, Mutant Alliance, and Zaxx bank, the last of which is blocking you from Diplomacy and consequently School Grad.

Also, your monthly activity is low. Especially for Year 7. I cannot know why at the first glance. Having a score of 8k in Jan 2607 is really not what it's cracked up to be. I would have to play your save and see why.

Hi. I have been asked multiple times to give an opinion on starting conditions, especially on JS.

I have played only a handful of starts, and there is no secret to which one is my favourite, but in order to broaden my horizons, I think I will have to attempt to try them all, in order to definitively (until next version) answer which one is best. Or at least, sort them into tiers.

I have theorycrafted a bunch of promising candidates, in no particular order:

Pacific/None

Siberia/Turan

N. Africa/Thebes

N. America/Cali

Arctic/Northfed

Europe/Blackmarch

Europe/Romanica/M.Touch

If you are experienced, you can probably see a pattern as to why I consider those the strongest starts.


I plan on trying them all with Gray/Dumbass/Male Touch to limit variance a bit, and play each for 6-ish months, about to the time the missile rain starts. The ideal preparation would be 4 Overcharged radars by 1st of July.

Any other ideas? Suggestions?

Since playing such a start is A LOT of work, I will not promise to play all suggestions. If you come here suggesting that Middle East/Thebes or S. Africa/Rogue Fields is the best start ever, I will not even attempt it, unless you can argue it well in words.

You have to be careful with the math though.

Aerial weapons do 50-100% of stated damage, not 50-150% like the rest of the game.

That means that the expected median for damage requires a .75 modifier in order for your math to be accurate. Not that 6 avalanches is enough for a large sample, so luck can swing either way.


I would go with 3 Brave Whalers, 2 is not enough, assuming your other math is accurate.

Also, you can recruit cats later through various ways.

As with other choices, you get an *easy* way in, but you are not stopped to recruit them through normal methods.
