The X-Com Files / Re: Bugs, crashes, typos & bad taste
« on: February 11, 2018, 06:13:28 pm »
A new list of bugs. At least one of them is critical:

Missing strings:

STR_MASS_DRIVER_WEAPONS_PREREQUISITE
STR_HEAVY_GAUSSGUN [m]
STR_ELECTRIC

Corpses with missing strings still appear in the game, see the screenshot. If I'm not mistaken, this bug was also noticed by Starving Poet during his stream.

The picture of the storm rose in Ufopedia is out of position, as you can see on the second screenshot.

The game crashes when trying to open the Gauss Hovertank Ufopedia article with the error message 'OpenXcom has crashed: Unit STR_HOVERTANK_GAUSS not found'.

Thanks for the help yergnoor,

I really appreciate your work on the translation and what you do to promote OXC on 4PDA.

Meridian,

Thank you for uploading the text for your binary and the translation to Transifex. It should speed up and simplify things.

Well, I fully translated Apocalypse but still can't get used to Transifex. By the way, do you know how to track changes in the source strings that are already translated? It is one of the most important problems for me.

Thanks Solar! I'll try to get used to Transifex since for me it has some flaws that I don't know how to avoid.

Do I need to check if everything was transferred properly? I'm asking because some of the already translated strings are displayed as untranslated on Transifex.

Edit: Don't worry, I figured it out. These strings are from the vanilla game.

Hello everyone!

Thanks for you translation, Saratovets! Some mistakes I've already found in the translation:

Quote
Враги теперь видны на миникарте

The word мини-карта should be written with a hyphen: http://gramota.ru/slovari/dic?all=x&word=%D0%BC%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B8

Quote

This should be corrected all over the text.

Quote

This should be "на транспорт".

Quote

The point is unnecessary here.

Quote

No need in the comma here.

Quote

Quote
Панцирная броня cостоит из бронепластин

It looks like the word "состоит" is written with Latin and Cyrillic characters. It's better to rewrite it using only the Cyrillic ones.

Quote
Дредноуты это некогда павшие в бою герои космодесанта

A dash is required before "это".

Quote
пушкой 'разрушетель'

Quote
Серво-рука

The hyphen is unnecessary here.

Quote

I would recommend you to use German quotes (i. e. «») instead of the single ones. It is a typography standard in Russian, they look better and don't require adding an escape character.

I'd also recommend you to replace the decimal digit with a comma since in Russian the point is not used for the numbers.

That's the result of a very superficial check. If you are interested, I can help you in proofreading the translation though my help would be very limited since at the moment I don't have too much time to work on the game.

I'll release the update tomorrow. It's almost ready, but I still have a problem with one of the Hotkeys articles added with the current version - it's far too long for the Russian language. Apart from that, I have to replace "оперативники" by "агенты". As for Elerium, I want more opinions to make a decision and won't change the translation in this update.

Edit: the update is ready and uploaded to the first post. Sorry for the delay. Please keep in mind that I had to remove some of the less important entries (that duplicate the interface functionality) from the Hotkeys: Battlescape article. That was the only way to stay within the borders of the Ufopedia articles.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Обойма это такая железяка в которую вставляются патроны для ускорения заряжания оружия с несъемным магазином. Таким как СКС или винтовка Мосина.

У револьверов нет обойм. Скорее это можно назвать "скорозарядник"

That's true: http://www.shampoogun.narod.ru/revolver/revolver.htm "Ускоритель заряжания" or "Спидлоадер" are the best options. I'll take the latter because it's shorter.

Criminal reports use the word "выстрел" exclisively.

That's also true. Another reason of using this word is that the word "выстрел" is widely used by weapon specialists in the meaning of ammunition, because of the complex design of such grenades.

Not a problem, difference between "STR_HUNTING_RIFLE: "Охотничье ружье"" and "STR_SPORTING_RIFLE: "Охотничья винтовка"" is enough to understand, that these are two different weapons.

If we look at their characteristics, we'll see that the sporting rifle is worse in almost every aspect, except for a slight accuracy bonus. At the same time, all the rifles feature a rifled barrel, while the guns are smoothbore, so, the former must be more effective, which is not the case in the mod.

Here I discovered some translation bugs:

Thanks for the report, Kozinsky! The comments are below:

Quote
STR_RIFLE_M16_BUY: "Покупка винтовки L85" - Missprint "L85" instead "M16"
STR_SHOW_ONLY_NEW: "Показывать только новые" - The string length is too big for container, where it is displayed, maybe it's most correct to use "Только новые"?
STR_DOSSIER_MERIDIAN_HUNTER_UFOPEDIA: ">>СПЕЦИАЛИЗАЦИЯ: Наемник..." - Extra symbol ">" at the beginning

Thanks, all fixed.

Quote
STR_SPORTING_RIFLE_CLIP: "Патроны спортивной винтовки" - Wrong translation of the word "sporting". It is more correct to use the second meaning of the translation value of this word - "охотничья"
STR_SPORTING_RIFLE: "Спортивная винтовка" - Wrong translation of the word "sporting". It is more correct to use the second meaning of the translation value of this word - "охотничья"

It's true, but there's already a hunting rifle in the mod, and that could lead to a confusion. Since some sporting rifles can be used as hunting rifles, I prefer the current translation.

Quote
STR_MISSIONS_BY_UFO: "МИССИЙ, ПО ТС" - Maybe, it's most correct to use "НЛО" instead "ТС"?

"ТС" means "транспортное средство" here. Since in this mod there are missions related to Men in Black transports that can't be considered as UFOs, I decided not to use "НЛО" to translate this line. Moreover, there are USOs and lots of other conspiracy stuff that can't be considered as UFOs.

Quote
STR_RPG_ROCKET: "Выстрел РПГ" - Missprint "Выстрел" instead "Ракета"

Not really. Take a look at this: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D0%9F%D0%93-7 this: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%93%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D1%91%D1%82%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9_%D0%B2%D1%8B%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BB , and this: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%93%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D1%91%D1%82

Quote
STR_MAGNUM_DRUM: "Картидж «Магнум» 0,44" - Missprint "картидж" instead "картридж".
STR_MAGNUM_DRUM: "Картидж «Магнум» 0,44" - Maybe, it's most correct to use "обойма" instead "картридж"?
STR_MAGNUM_AA_DRUM: "Картридж «Магнум» 0,44 (СП)" - Maybe, it's most correct to use "обойма" instead "картридж"?
STR_MAGNUM_AA_DRUM_PREQ: "Требование для картриджа «Магнум» 0,44 (СП)" - Maybe, it's most correct to use "обойма" instead "картридж"?

You are right. I was using "обойма" when I was working on the FMP translation, but then for some reason I decided to change this to "картридж". Will be fixed, many thanks.

Quote
STR_MELEE_SHORT: "БлБ>{ALT}{0}" - The word "БлБ" is not understandable, much better to use "Ближ."

To be honest, I don't like either of the options, but I'll take your translation, it's slightly better than Lohland's or mine.

Quote
Also, in the international community, the caliber of weapons in inches according to the template ". ##" is accepted, for example ".44" instead of "0,44".

Thanks, I'll fix that. I know the Russian Wiki is not the best source of any professional information, but 0,44 was widely used. Since I couldn't find the standard in any editor's reference book, it should be changed.

STR_REPTOID_BASE - missing string

If I post extraStrings_RU_XCOMFILES.rul with all 287 occurrences of "оператив..." replaced with "агент...", will you accept it?

Ok, let's finally discuss that. My use of the word "оперативник" was determined by an old tradition. Some of the old Russian pirated translations called the fighters of the X-COM security forces as "оперативник", obviously keeping in mind that they were not only soldiers and world's saviours, but also members of the X-COM "corporation" (it's more a corporation than an agency considering particular traits of its economic activities) and investigators of all sorts of paranormal activities. The last aspect is particularly stressed in X-COM Files. The Wiktionary article https://ru.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D0%BE%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA also makes me think "оперативник" suits better to XCF. On the other hand, FBI agents are usually translated as "агенты", and X-COM in XCF is pretty much similar to an FBI branch, at least in the first half of the game. I can easily replace all the occurences myself, but I need more opinions if that's really necessary. So, what do you think is better - "оперативник" or "агент"?

And speaking about the translation, there's one more thing that bothers me since the beginning. What do you prefer - "элериум" or "элерий"? "Элериум" is a traditional translation, while "элерий" is much more correct according to Russian rules of giving names to chemical elements, think of beryllium (бериллий), magnesium (магний), calcium (кальций), strontium (стронций), barium (барий), and radium (радий). While I was working on the current version of the FMP translation, I decided to change "элериум" to "элерий", but I still highly doubt it should be done with the translation of XCF. So, what do you prefer in that case?

By the way, the update is almost ready, I just need to properly check it once more.

Edit: The translation is finally updated and uploaded to the starting post. Enjoy.

« on: December 22, 2017, 10:24:36 pm »
Thanks a lot, Lohland! I'll try to change these lines. But I won't replace "оперативники" by "агенты", it's for sure, because I want the translation to remain consistent and I don't use the"агенты" variant anywhere in my version. In that case, I prefer to use an abbreviation, such as "ОПЕРАТИВН." Anyway, many thanks for the report.

PS Don't get me wrong - by answering in English in this thread, I'm not trying to offend anyone. I'm doing this to make Solar's work as a moderator easier, though Russian is my native language.

Hi Solar,

It's not me :). It's another man who decided not to wait for my version and make his own translation of the missing lines. I'm working on the translation right now and hope to release the update on Saturday. If anyone wants to take Kozinsky's version, I don't mind.

P. S. I should have said that before, but due to the nature of my current job I'm hardly able to translate the mod during the working week. So, it's highly probable that further translations might be released on the weekend next to the date of an update.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but real life takes its toll.
