Rod of Bliss is listed as a one-handed melee weapon and yet requires both hands. Is it supposed to be two-handed or one-handed? It doesn't look all that large relative to other one-handed items.

And as far as armor, I just researched full plate mail and I'm making my first 2 suits of that.  I picked Red, so the several suits of Aggressor armor from that have been quite nice to use over Warrior.
Full Plate Mail is mostly junk outside of niche usage cases because the movement penalty is SO BAD. The armor value is okay, but not great, and hardly matters if you can't actually get to the battle.  When you're losing 20-30 TU outright, you're either slowing the entire group down or you're missing the battle anyway.

I also just built my first armored car, so I was going to see about using that
Car is a great upgrade to Ablative Peasants as far as recon and drawing fire goes, since it can soak up a fair amount of small arms fire with impunity, although you may have to do a few donuts around the zone you want to draw fire in for your TU to drop low enough to get reaction fired.

although neither the Scorpion nor the Snake can deploy it
Yeah, Red Codex ships are useless. :P Get used to using Expedition and Convoy.

I've been using two gals with chain & shield as my "tanks" to absorb the opening salvo, and been lucky so far about not losing one.
This is where ablative peasants come in. Their crap TU means that the moment they step off the dropship, they will immediately draw fire from everything in sight. Many of them will die for their planet. A few will be forced through a fine mesh screen for their planet. They will be the luckiest of all.

I will point out that UFOs do not always tear around at maximum speed.
And since I have no means of making them not do this, this is still irrelevant. A useful plan only involves factors you can control. If you can't control it, it's not part of the plan.

Aside from base attackers, the flight routines are explicitly designed to allow opportunity to engage.
So the one thing you'd actually need to intercept is the thing you never can. Useless!

Granted faster is easier, but hey STC slot means you have pretty easy access to another 650 speed, assuming retculians show up.
Raising it by +650 speed doesn't enable you to intercept anything new, however. Going from 1900 to 2550 just lets you fail at intercepting Heavy Freighters, which are 2600 and thus you still fail. Everything else is still faster than that. There is absolutely no difference between a speed of 1 and a speed of N-1 when it comes to intercepting something of speed N.

The closest thing Red has to a usable codex ship is the Snake, which makes a passable upgrade to your Airbus, goes underwater, and the shield lets it get into fights with Raider Barques with impunity, but like everything else, is too slow to actually intercept anything. And the internal layout and spawn points are awful. But at least it's not the Scorpion. Scorpion is a deathtrap as you will die instantly on turn 1 before the enemy has a chance to even take its actual turn if you use it as a dropship and it's still too slow to be an interceptor, although sticking a fusion reactor on it will boost its speed to a usable level.

I used to think the Scarab was nice, but after a full Red playthrough, I came to realize it was actually almost useless and I just had an expensive white elephant I was using to shoot down civilians and HKs.

Are raiders now supposed to be holding crackdowns with Bombers? I don't remember seeing tons of Raiders in heavy warships before, but as of L9, this has apparently become a thing?

Does it become more useful after I start unlocking STC modules and other upgrades (I think some of those fit in Heavy slots, so that could come into play then)?  The boosted power/damage from its special ability seems to imply it should be used as a heavy intercepter, but that seems a little insane until I get better weapons (and its lack of speed works against it there, too) and by then, I'll probably have better aircraft.  I don't even see a way to maybe "improve" it to the point of where I think it would be worth having, although maybe increasing the armor from 6 (the lowest weapon power of enemy craft looks like 15, I'm guessing they do the same 50 to 150% possible damage roll?  Or do they work differently?).
Based on my experiences with my Red Codex play, Scarab was of very limited use. It does great damage with the weapons it can carry, but its terrible speed (1900) limits it to intercepting only things slower than it is, none of which are actually armed in any real way. On rare occasions you might manage to bait an HK into you, since the only way you're getting into a fight with anything that can actually shoot at you is if you convince them to chase you, seeing as the speed on the Scarab is basically nonexistent. Unfortunately, none of the big targets will actually ever pursue you. No HK battleships or anything. While it has potentially amazing firepower, the problem is that none of it matters if you can't get to the battle. The only thing that can salvage the Scarab from the junkpile of near-uselessness would be somehow finding enough orbs to make an Ethyr-X, wihch would boost its speed to 5500, enough to actually intercept things. Anything less than the top-tier Ethyr drive would not be sufficient to actually catch anything.

As there is nothing close to a viable source of Orbs that I know of, good luck with that one. If you somehow manage to cobble one together, THEN maybe you can buy a Scarab. Otherwise it's a waste of money. The very niche purpose of baiting HKs, none of which are capital-grade threats anyway, does not really justify the cost and hangar bay.

The same problem plagues the "ultimate" fighter, the Dragon, which is useless junk for all the same reasons: It's too slow to actually fight anything that would need that level of firepower. The result is that for all your research, you get a heavily armed transport without aux capacity. Totally useless.

Remember that red is not the only codex that exists. Try playing green without Scarab.
Green doesn't change anything that makes the Scarab not useless, far as I know.

Gnome 9000 mentions grav module, but does not enable gnome to fly? What is the purpose of the grav module, then? It doesn't reduce weight nor enable flying...

The big ones I want alive, I just jab a few times with a stun prod before beating them unconconscious with the Blood Axe. Pinkies, though, I specifically need dead because I need their corpses for axe-making. Barons I can do either way, I can make something with both live and dead barons.

Never tried the Kraken, though, seeing as I recall it had negative effects on use.

The Kraken Cannon? Why the Kraken Cannon?

Incidentally, my hilarious area-of-effect anti-demon weapon is actually the Blood Axe. "What", you say, "Axes aren't AOE!". That's just what people who have never tried it say. The Blood Axe is absolutely an AOE weapon that can be deployed with precision selectiveness to make dead the things you want dead and leave the things you want alive to be neutral-whipped into submission...by the same person.

Zoom, 88 miles per hour, time travel.
Why does it do this streaking pattern and doesn't hit everything in the radius necessarily?
This streaking pattern tends to be caused by having obstacles between ground zero and your target, creating a kind of shadow zone. With many small obstacles, you can get this kind of streaky look in the blast.

Re: shotguns.  Honestly they're only uberpowered early game anyways.  Plenty of things deal large amounts of damage to softies later by back to school or with high experience gals (ninja stars, e-pulse, slayer (although who even makes slayer bullets) etc).  Also what would peasants even use if the shotgun required aiming? XD  Besides:  The mod follows anime rules more than IRL rules :P
Well, in vanilla, rookies that can't aim get bazookas. Either they hit their targets or die trying. In Piratez, I tend to avoid this kind of behavior because I want them alive, no disintegrations, etc. I do find that peasants tend to be pretty accurate with the Reticulan Electrogun because it aims by voodoo, but this is a more mid-to-late option. Space Ranger Jaeger Carbine is a pretty decent weapon to issue them also, because it's internally accurate to the point where even the most cack-handed peasant can hit > 100% snap. Early on, I issue them pointy sticks, another infernally accurate weapon.

I don't think I've ever seen one with quite so many demons at once, all in one place, to boot. Time to let loose with something explodey.

I'm finding that if you carry a shitty grenade, the AI can't seem to resist the urge to cheathax its way into using it (no free inventory slots make it otherwise impossible to actually move the grenade to your hand and not drop your weapon in the process), but because it's a really shit grenade, it'll just chew up his turn for no useful result. Every time I've had someone MC'ed, the AI wants to use that shitty grenade that I never removed from my loadout template since the beginning of the game. It doesn't really do anything but the AI uses it anyway, and this keeps it from moving very far or performing any effective action...not that my crew seems to actually carry weapons capable of effectively hurting each other: In order to harm a heavy target, I use a two-stage process, and when the AI only controls one person, it can't carry out that process, so it goes with "throw the shitty grenade", since its other option is "unload a laspistol into a red shield for no useful result", as the laspistol is meant to strip blue shields and Annihilators have red shields...

2)  So I had a large wave of medium ships land in May '01, they were tanking my score so I figured I'd at least touch down.  The basic footmen had lasguns so I figured it was way above my level.
Lasguns are actually weaker damagewise compared to bullet-shooting guns. Their main advantage is their arpen, but you probably don't have any armor anyway, so that advantage is mooted.

They are, however, infernally accurate, at least in the player's hands, but this advantage is again lost on the AI, as the AI automatically hits you anyway, regardless of how ludicrously difficult the shot would otherwise have been, so this point is similarly moot.

They're also extra-effective against blue shields (the best shields), but again, you don't have any of these yet, so this advantage is similarly irrelevant.

Put together, lazor-wielding enemies are not really any tougher than their bullet-shooting counterparts early on.

Yes, the penalty still applies if you wake them up because they still drop the item when knocked down.

Well church is 200% instead of 100% I believe, so it's not that bad.  Hallucinogen don't destroy each other and are cheap, compared to a 500k capture, so just tossing 10 of them is fine.
The problem is that you're now talking about throwing 10 grenades, which probably means at least 10 guys throwing grenades at one guy, and this many guys in such close proximity IS asking for lightning.

But finding multiple toxiguns is almost impossible :(
Impossible? Surely not, every Snakeman purge gives me more of them than I've ever used, ever. I also get them by the bucket out of Ghoul Town.

I wouldn't consider this a particularly good vulnerability, given that the standard choke damage multiplier is 400% as a baseline, meaning even though the Church suits don't offer full immunity, they still reduce your effective damage to 25%. Gassing them is not terribly effective as a result, and the TU usage on ropes is simply too bad to make this a good tactic, since you'll only get one attack requiring most of your TUs at point blank range.

If you're going to close to melee, you're better off just chopping them until the shield fails and then beating them over the head. Gold shields function, but very poorly, against cutlasses and axes. I advise the cutlass or knife for this, AXE TO THE HEAD is often so strong that it will just blow right through and one-shot anyway.
