Playthroughs / Re: Shortest game ever
« on: August 21, 2014, 03:40:08 am »
I must say I never used  rifles and usually sell the small stuff immediately to make space for my purchases.
Anyone strong enough will carry Heavy or Autocannon, preferably with HE ammo, the strongest soldier gets the rocket launcher. The rest gets grenades. They work really well in early game if used at large numbers. Your guys will improve quickly and after some missions most will be strong enough to carry heavy weapons.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't think of equipping the low strength ones with grenades only - sounds like a good strategy! When my soldiers are stronger I equip the best ones with both heavy plasma and a rocket or heavy cannon with HE ammo - packs a powerful punch against any alien.

Yeah imposing limitations would be a good way to go for now. I already skip psionics. I hope there will be a mod though, elite mutons and alien weapon upgrades sound great :)

Yeah at first I was happy -  lots of loot. Then I saw the cyberdiscs, and after shooting one four times with a rifle with no effect I thought...oh shit, should have invested in heavy weaponry early.

I like the idea of uploading scores, maybe something for the suggestions forum?

I have to say, losing is my favorite part of 1.0

No, I'm serious!

Agreed :) I find it more fun to lose than to win

I can confirm at least two bases at that stage is key, I don't think patrolling is necessary. Also for the missions research shortcuts help for more men to survive. Things which can be skipped include all plasma pistols and rifles (straight to heavy), heavy laser and laser cannon (stick to laser rifles, and go straight for plasma cannon), as well as the motion scanner. Surprised you had 6 million dollars, I usually don't have more than a hundred thousand or so - whatever I have I early game I spend on researchers and a research lab, or a new base.

Playthroughs / Shortest game ever

I just had my shortest game ever. Only a couple of days in, my base gets attacked - before any UFO missions. I had researched nothing at this point. My soldiers therefore had no armor and only the basic weapons. They were completely wiped out by cyberdiscs as my rifle-equipped soldiers were useless. I lost the base, and thus the game. This was on superhuman level. Was this just a fluke? My next game I'm in August without a single base attack.

Fan-Stuff / Which mods/settings to make late game more difficult?
« on: August 20, 2014, 07:59:59 am »
I hugely enjoyed playing the first few months which is very challenging on superhuman / ironman / sneaky AI, but I find it becomes a bit easy and boring a few months as soon as your soldiers have heavy plasma and flying suits (and especially once you have the avenger). The difficulty level just drops like a cliff, except for terror missions / battleships which are still a challenge pre-avenger. I was wondering what mods you might recommend to keep the early game around the same difficulty but later game more difficult.

I know there's "no psionics" but I found the difficulty drops before that stage is reached. Thanks for any suggestions!

Troubleshooting / Re: [SOLVED] Fails to start - cannot load ruleset

I played the original x-com with the bugfix but superhuman does seem to be another level in openxcom, maybe I shouldn't have switched on sneaky AI  :o
Though I like the sneaky AI, maybe I'll try an easier level instead...I do love that it's a lot more challenging now :)

Much thanks to you! Just lost a game on superhuman already, I'd forgotten how hard it is (maybe iron mode wasn't such a good idea...) :)

Yes, that worked, thank you! I had actually moved it from program files to another harddrive for exactly that reason where files should not be protected, but it didn't work (as mentioned above). No idea why the documents folder did work...but it works  :)

I just tried to see what happens if I remove the 'data' folder altogether and I get the same message, suggesting that it is not necessarily related to the ruleset but perhaps finding the data folder. In fact I can remove all files and folders except the .dll files and OpenXcom.exe, and I still get the message 'failed to load ruleset'.

It contains the folder data, sub-folder Ruleset and the file Xcom1Ruleset.rul. The folder structure is exactly as in the examples provided. It never ran for me (running the non-openxcom Steam version or my other copy works fine though). I also tried copying the folder from the default Program Files to another location but that didn't work either.

Troubleshooting / [SOLVED] Fails to start - cannot load ruleset
« on: August 12, 2014, 07:07:48 am »
I'm having trouble getting it to start. It says 'Failed to load ruleset'. I tried both manual and automatic installs, and I tried both my own copy of x-com - and when that didn't work bought the steam copy, I get the same message. I'm using Windows 8, 64-bit. Thanks for any help, would love to try this classic again.
