XPiratez / Pigeon battlescape sprites

Geo is pretty horrible and in some places outright broken, but naturally it doesn't matter because we're rendering to 400px. I've included the .blend source in case anyone wants to make improvements or use it as a base for something else.

I palletize the render in photoshop, first by applying -10% brightness, +50% contrast, and then indexing without any dithering. Then I save that, and index again with pattern dithering.
Then put the dithered layer on top, with the darken blend mode. (you can use lighten too, but darken looks best here imo.) I manually mask out some parts of the darken layer and generally make some touchups to hide the bad geo.

It's pretty huge, maybe too big to actually work in game, I don't know the limits.
If it's too long then I could cheat and bring the tail in closer. The wingspan could be addressed by having them fold up:

I don't know anything about implementing this in game, other than it's a pain in the ass. If anyone wants to help with that, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'll slowly figure it out myself at some point.
I haven't made an interior yet, but it shouldn't be too hard to do cutaways for each level and just paste some existing interior inside of it. I'm gonna wait until the dimensions are definitely okay before I start.

Picked this up again after not playing for a few years.

Still sublime. I expected to be playing Metro Exodus all day today, but I installed this while I waited on the download and well, I'm about to go to bed and Metro hasn't been started.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this amazing mod for all their hard work.

Yo, just made an account. Did a windows Defender scan of my computer earlier today and it says there was a 'Trojan:Script\Foretype.A!ml' at

Thumbs.db is generated by windows (to display thumbnail images in windows explorer), so it's probably not anything malicious.

Does Dioxine have a patreon or anything similar? I try to give a couple bucks to a few creators each month, and I just remembered that Xpiratez exists, so I'd love to contribute if possible.

Maybe I'm reading the handcannon sprite wrong :) No problem, in any case.

The frag grenade is basically unchanged, literally removed 4 pixels to make it a little less square.
I might try redoing it for more of a slim MK. 2 look. Slimming it down a little and muddying the bright green should make it feel a bit less Worms.

Dioxine, do you have a preference for things looking like strict pixel art, or more rendered and then palletized, like the javelins or soy sprites?

Is it possible to avoid the 'new manufacture available' pop ups for robbing and hiring people when repeatedly interrogating them? Once you've already got those options, I mean.

I wouldn't mind trying to fix that myself, but I've spent a while browsing through the source and I still haven't really got a feel for it. Any ideas where I should be looking?

New chemicals sprite, and enhanced roundness frag grenade.
And a slightly cleaned up handcannon that's a little less blurry.

Can't buy workers, the ammount goes to -19 when you try to add some, not sure what causes it,
save included

save is ironmode.

(v .99c fresh install)

Had this issue on a non ironmode fresh install. At some point after I first encountered it, it'd go to -17 instead of -19.
Hiring tough girls seemed to increase my workers normally though.

E: also, the Contacts: Merchants bootypedia entry seems to reset to unread very often. Not between multiple visits to the bootypedia at one time, but frequently nonetheless.

That's a really useful post, thank you! I haven't noticed ships landing at all, maybe I've just not been paying enough attention.

When you say to hire some pigeons, do you just mean buying them at the black market?

I currently don't have anything to research and I don't think I've got spy zeppelins yet. I was playing on the 0.98 release if that changes anything, but I'm updated now.

I'm assuming this is the best place to ask questions.

I'm having a lot of trouble actually catching ships. I'm a few months in and almost all of them are 2000 or 3000 speed and I just have the default bonavara thing and it can't come close to catching them. Am I supposed to have built a hunter killer or something by now? I haven't been able to find all the components to make one.

I've been trying to respond to as many mutant pogroms as possible, but I've started running into the deep ones and the blue guys seem invulnerable to all my weapons and explosives, so I've had to give up and run away from those. I've equipped some acid grenades and stuff and I'm gonna try that soon, but now a competing base has come up and I'm just completely outclassed- some of their weapons seem to one shot almost all of my people, and I have no way to deal with the psy attacks.

Have I severely mismanaged everything so far? :P
