The X-Com Files / Advice on speeding things along?

Blah, whenever I sit down to play this mod I find myself spending hours on crop circles and other minor missions that are way below my group's skill level. I'm aware that I could ignore them, but I get paranoid about my score and usually need the experience as my campaigns turn into meat grinders. I was wondering how other people dealt with them. Kind of hard to get to the late game when you are chasing down beetle #38 somewhere in a jungle.

The X-Com Files / Any special requirements to make gauss weapons?

So I managed to find and research a few gauss weapons, however they don't show up in the manufacturing list. Are there any special requirements for making things like that - I checked to see if there was an advanced version of the workshop but didn't see anything.

I'm just curious about other people's strategies in relation to things like the undercover, underwater, and the other weird missions. Whenever I set aside dedicated space for concealable equipment, hazmat stuff, and other specialty gear I end up feeling like I'm wasting time and money. Do you guys keep bases specifically set up for specialty missions? Do you just sell off a transport temporarily to grab a van? Or do you just ignore those missions in favour of the non-specialty missions? If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
