Work In Progress / alien melee question

Hi everyone!
I'm new to Open X-Com (but long time player in X-Com 1 and 2) so perhaps my question is about well-known issue.
I wanted to add some melee weapons into Alien arsenal (to add some aristocratic-Jedi streak to psi-using leaders and commanders) But the aliens didn't recognize it as a functional weapon just like in TFTD. So my sword indeed was turning into a ceremonial item for grenadiers.
However the funny thing happened when I took MC over sword-wielding alien and started slicing and dicing. When I stopped MCing him the next turn he ran to my soldiers and started killing them with the sword! Maybe I turned it into active weapon like the one used for reaction fire but it's just a speculation. Never heard about something like that in TFTD... but I've never checked.
With so many melee and alien weapon mods I would expect that it is known issue and someone should know how to activate the melee weapon automatically (if it is possible at all)
P.S: I'm using v.1.0 and haven't yet tried nightly.
