In the alpha version, the troop transport carried 10. They decided to reduce the number of soldiers so that the final tier would not have Avenger levels of troops to micromanage.

It was still a stupid decision. Taking away player agency just dumbs things down with these games. If I want to micromanage a large squadron of soldiers, cool. If I don't then I don't bother. It's one of those enigmas of developers who make arbitrary decisions for the player when it's no at all necessary.

But it's only a somewhat significant blight on an otherwise decent game.

Solomon has stated that the Volunteer doesn't die at the end sequence but added nothing about what happened to him when the Temple Ship was destroyed.

My opinion is that the Temple Ship was both a test and a trap, for the aliens to capture a human specimen if they proved the special species that they were looking for.

Ugh, now I remember why I never bothered to finish NuXCOM - railroading a "one true way" of playing the game plus a retarded attempt to tell a convoluted and shallow story when it wasn't necessary.

That said, Long War and Enemy Within made the game tolerable for me. Though it's a shame it took a free mod, and a DLC with stuff that should've already been included in 2012, to do this.

Cheers from Nippon. Heh, somehow I skipped over the introduction forums before making a couple of posts. I found OpenXCom after being disappointed with the Firaxis release and trying to figure out how to get the old UFO to work on my netbook. I'm just blown away with the whole project! to take an old classic, which was arguably ahead of its time, and make it a modern port is cool as hell. It's kind of like what the Stracciatella mod did for Jagged Alliance 2 (or the 1.13 project before it got all stupid and bloated).

I'm just happy my old favorites are playable again. Anyway, thanks for OpenXCom!

That book will never be out of date for one reason: It was the only sci-fi work that  had a realistic take on our gretest defender (and our greatest offender if we ever make it into other planets), the enviroment. In everything else that you read aliens and humans simply walk into the new planet who admitedly has parameters to support their life fuctions, casually.

Environmentalism was/is the fashionable thing to be into now, so I'm not surprised this interpretation comes up. When I read it the first time, the popular one was anti-colonialism.

Either way, it's a timeless book to be enjoys straight or through reading it's themes.

Released Mods / Re: [HWP] Attack Dog

Hehe, cool mod. I'm tempted to learn how to do my own graphics and put in a St. Bernard and a sled to haul medi-kits around; or some yapper breed for human-to-alien grenade relaying.
