A few questions:
  • What is the allure in a series as opposed to an individual book? Kilopages in a single universe? Different author's interpretations of the same characters?
  • Is a (single author) trilogy a series?

Allure for me is just new universe to explore and a different spin on similar characters.   There are even some overtones with events from the past 10 years the bleed over into the stories.   I think one of the authors is a former soldier, so it has a more military feel to it.

So far the series is up to 8 books and counting with two side stories.

The Gaunt's Ghosts Warhammer 40k by Dan Abnett is superb. Very cleverly written, has squad feel to it and plenty of different weapons in use. It has a good pace in its melee and non-melee sequences. Start from the beginning as it makes more sense. You love the characters straight away.


I'm not a big fan of the 40K universe, but I'll try and check these out when I get a chance.

I've been enjoying this book series:  Galaxy's Edge for quite some time.  It's available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.  It's not quite XCOM, but it's really good.  It has a more of a Star Wars feel to it because there are some sarcastic references taking jabs at the SW universe occasionally.  The best parts are when they focus on "The Legion" and their exploits.


The latest OXCE+ has integrated the fixes for the Commendations from the latest nightly builds.

Okay, stupid question:

"Go to your Mod folder and delete the old "Commendations" directory."

Where is my Mod folder? I'm trying to install this mod

2nd question, having just downloaded the most recent nightly, I look at the list of mods in the base game, no mendition is made of "Commendations." Is this normal?

I am not very good manualy installing mods.

Hey Mr Frustrated,

I assume you're on Windows.  If so, there should be a folder in your Documents folder called "OpenXcom".    Extract the Commendations zip file under the "OpenXcom\mods" folder so that you have the set of directories like this "OpenXcom\mods\Commendations".  When you start OpenXcom, the program should find it under there, and it will be available under the "Mods" options where you can enable it by selecting "Yes".

Im using Oxce+ 3.10a which is based on nightly (v2018-04-03)
Afaik is the last version and it's a standalone mod.

I dont know if i can copy latest nightly files in the Oxce+ folder to get an updated version.
If that's not possible looks like I have to wait for an Oxce+ update by developers.

Okay, makes sense now.  The changes from the nightly have not been integrated into OXCE+ as of yet.   So, I would go back to Commendations < 3.0 for now until Meridian updates OXCE+.

I've found a bug. This is the ruleset:

the "totalSoldierRevives" criteria is not working. All soldiers will get Angel's cross medal each mission.

To correct the bug just delete "Soldier" in that criteria.

You need the latest nightly as of openxcom_git_master_2018_04_24_2218.  This "totalSoldierRevives" was added to fix the Angel Cross being awarded to non-soldier revives.

The behavior you describe is exactly what happens when you have the latest Commendations against an older nightly.  Since the variable doesn't exist in older nightlies, it's hitting random memory accesses with random numbers therefore random awards of Angel Cross.

To put it simply - is disclosing alien alloy technology to the MAGMA corporation worth it in the long run?

Personally, I'd say it's worth it, but I haven't finished a playthrough yet.   Solarius would know better of course :)  It's super easy to make up for a 500 pt hit.

PS: I have also PRed a CTD fix when upgrading Commendations mod mid-campaign.

Thanks for those code fixes and the updating of the mod.

One question popped just up in my mind when i checked the github repo and the commit:

-      STR_MEDAL_REVIVE_DESCRIPTION: "Given to a soldier who returned from the brink a fellow soldier."
+      STR_MEDAL_REVIVE_DESCRIPTION: "Given to a soldier who returned a fellow soldier from the brink of death."

Is this wording correct?

It could be "who returned from the brink of death a fellow soldier" .  I think it could go either way, but "from the brink?"  I've never heard of that without specifying what the brink was.  Brink of what? Insanity? Fever? Chicken pox?

I'll fix the metadata and install.txt.   Thanks for the palette fixes, since I  barely have a clue as to how all that works :)

My changes got accepted:

I tested a bunch of different combinations and made sure no old saves were broken by the changes, so it should all work.  Going forward, the current and previous versions of the Commendations mod will exhibit the same incorrect behavior with the  next upcoming nightly build. 

I'll get a new Commendations that works correctly pushed out when the new nightly build is available.


Commendations 3.0 is out that fixes the ruleset to use the new stat for awarding the angel's cross.

THIS REQUIRES THE LATEST NIGHTLY:   openxcom_git_master_2018_04_24_2218

If you pair this new mod revision with the older nightly, you may see some strange behavior (like random angel cross awards), but the game will work.

The problem was at my end: I was working also in some of the ruleset files you sent and I ended up losing some of my work because I wasn't paying enough attention. The good news is that it was just minor testing features, and it opened my eyes to this potential problem in the future.

This is where version control comes in handy, so long as you commit changes frequently :)
