Laser, alloys(armour), avenger. Can't do without armour :)
.. What's the best thing to manufacture and sell near start of a game?

Naming just helps me know different abilities easier. When sarge dies, it's all good, there's another en-route!
A stray bullet flies through the window doc's scoping, just missing him, but conviently hitting that well placed barrell. God, nowhere else do you get these types of situations..

Don't take your time too much, you'll get absorbed, like the rest of your day :p
Don't try the same thing twice
Don't wait to build your second base
Do research alien alloys as quickly as possible
Do another batch of laser pistols to sell
Do hire as many scientists and engineers as you can
Do hire more rookies than you (think you) need

Offtopic / fodders patch
« on: July 11, 2013, 11:53:14 pm »
Laptop doesn't like open xcom. No start, nothing. Runs dosbox or win version, I think the problem might be f0dders patch.
It's an old xcom patch, I can't remember if it was just musfix.dll patch.dll or if anything else may remain.
I have UFO on cd but cd drives goosed.. tried extracting iso but system refusing virtural drive! User has limited control.

I've removed both libraries, replaced midi's, anything else?
I know it's only £3 online but she's reluctant to pay if it's not working.

Had some nasty encounters with psi enemies..
At the start of the game, I always find my captain. The guy with highest stats.
After three different games being abolished by my captain being controlled, I'm thinking guys starting off with high stats tend to have low psi. Always leads to my best guy being most suspecible to attack.

This time, the worst guy on my team is going to be Cpt!

Do enemy controlled units get a massive stat raise or is it just me?
Likewise controlled aliens suffer heavy weakness penalty?

Wondering what you all use for your soldiers names

For me.. Fodder, Scout, Rookie, Frag, Photon, Carl Dodge, Rocket, Doc, Sarge and Cpt. Crash

Troubleshooting / beta build install
« on: July 09, 2013, 03:27:51 am »
very silly question, but better safe than sorry.

I take it you can install the beta over previous stable? Savegame has too much to lose.
I had a backup, but it got used for trying out ufo2000 and then corrupted. Deleted full folder.

I've really gone off games now that i dont have the time i used to, but ill never stop playing Xcom. Never.
Add in the fact it can be modded, tweaked, expanded etc and you get an ever changing progressive development engineered by the people who actually play it. I'm learning codes just to help out and try my own at a mod
Xcom and SimCity are two games that may just keep exanding (esp. with their 'inferior' new versions) and may start becoming limitless as technology advances.

To boldly go where wherever the hell we end up

Now.. here's a crazy idea..

The origional Xcom game had many monsters created when trying to find the right ones, and two of them are bunnies!
no, seriously
The adult bunny would hide round corners and.. lay eggs. They dont attack.
Eggs hatch into babies. They don't take caution around foe's, so they walk randomly.
This leads to many bunnies everywhere. Seems of no concern to Xcom, but, the thing is.. they explode violently near heat.
We wouldn't have stood a chance, great idea though.

I was thinking.. we could make the baby bunny into a energiser weapon. Take the bunny out your pack, wind it, and set it for the nearest alien. Once it's close enough, boom!
Would rid the 'one enemy left camping in control room' problem. Chuck in a bunny!
Clearing houses quickly(as in less tu's)

No-one would attack it except high psi / mind probe wielding aliens
I would make it explode next to soldiers/civillians, though. Can't be too careful when your a toy bunny filled with.. I dunno

..So stun damage doesn't affect anything until it's full?
Never really used smoke much, but when I had to(first terror raid), My guys missed alot. I put it down to smoke.

..and there was me afraid to try sneaky ai
'gets stun rod and explosives..'

It's a great idea, but i can see why it's left out.
Well, actually the blaster bunnies are ok themselves, but breeding could lead to unprecedented amounts. Fair enough, cap it, but you could still find 6 hiding round a corner. Try playing 'ironman' now!

Remember Halo2? Those bulging mutants spraying little spider dudes.. probably take about 2 days to infect the whole world(wothout preventitive measures, of course)

Android H-0.5 from Kepler 22-B. Not as cosy as I imagined, even for the non-existant needs of artificial life!

Been re-trying some classics and I've got hooked on this now that most bugs are gone. Mabye this time I'll manage to complete my game the proper way. It was nice to blame multiple saves on bugs, but I want to try complete the game without game save reverts, if guys die, they die. At least theres no green writing to which I smash my amiga and break it's hard drive, corrupting all things UFO :(

..anyway just thought I'd say keep up the good work! May end up helping with coding once I've refreshed

Open Feedback / Re: What defines openXcom 1.0?
« on: July 08, 2013, 05:14:12 pm »
Every time I see a new version out I'm like 'Is this it, then?' and low and behold there's always another version soon after.
I think it'll stay 'beta' untill they move project to another X game. Mabye even trying to incorporate Xcom and TTFD together, even though I heard that was impossible.

Judging by the workings here I'd say nothing's impossible
