Open Feedback / Re: Shooting Accuracy

I just meant it made sense given the technological limitations... there was no great way to show that you could only kinda/sorta see them.

Open Feedback / Destroying Radar Bases
« on: February 02, 2020, 07:16:33 am »
Did Aliens destroy undefended radar bases in the original X-COM/UFO Unknown? I don't remember that, and am curious.

There is some text relating to mind shields that suggests aliens detect bases from mental emanations, so one wonders how they would detect an unmanned base.

Oh, I wasn't expecting anyone would fix it; I've seen enough threads here to have the vibe down. But the title of the topic is "open feedback". It's feedback. As with line of sight, I get how the game works -- it's stupid and irritating, but hey, that is how the original worked, too. It was less irritating when DOS was the program loader and it took trickery to get more than 640k. In the modern era...

But sure, your goal is to replicate the original (except you don't, you add all sorts of bells and whistles). It's a great achievement, in that sense.

There are a million of these things. My soldier (er, "agent", if that makes you feel better) steps forward and suddenly the muton pops out of nothingness. It made sense in the early 1990s. Now... it seems bizarre.

Maybe I'm just too old. I've played a lot of X-COM over the years, and openxcom has been part of that, but... I just can't suspend disbelief like I once could.

Another example: Base raid, I walk past an "arrowhole" window in a hallway and the alien shoots me. I reload, replay it a bunch of times, alien kills me maybe 3 out of 5. But, if at the point where he kills me I wheel and shoot -- well, I can't. "No line of site." The path that works for the alien apparently doesn't work in the opposite direction.

It's stupid and aggravating.

I posted another topic on this, and then realized I'd already said it. It keep blowing my mind.

If our soldiers aimed like this, we would have lost EVERY war.

the accuracy model in openxcom is 1:1 with the original, we went to painstaking efforts to ensure that.

Oh, I concede it. I'm alternately infuriated and greatly amused.

Someone should make a game like this, but a little less... insane.

Open Feedback / Difficulty level way off
« on: December 20, 2019, 07:59:26 am »
So, I played openxcom a bunch 4-5 years ago (I think), and enjoyed it. It felt a lot like the original, but with improvements.

There have obviously been improvements since then, but the difficulty level seems way off to me -- "Beginner" is *much* harder than vanilla X-COM. (Which I have also played a ton.)

No, I'm not being affected by the difficulty bug -- I always played on Beginner, and still do. That's plenty stressful enough. I don't like losing soldiers.

I'm finding the current version more frustrating than fun. Back to the original, I guess, but I wanted to call it out in case you've kind of lost track of it, what with all the grognards playing on superhuman and whatnot.

The accuracy model of this game is ludicrous. I just watched rookies shoot 60 degrees off-target for a distance that couldn't have been even 100 yards.

I don't really blame the devs; this is the way the original worked. It was stupid then too, but less noticeable, given all the limitations of DOS games.

Defending ourselves from aliens we can't rustle up rookies who can aim something like on-target? In a world with many billions of people?

The placement of ships is similarly stupid.

Suggestions / Non-random RNG (Seeding)
« on: December 01, 2019, 01:50:15 am »
The problem with the non-random RNG is that there are openings (I'm experiencing this now) where your first few soldiers get gunned down without being able to fire a shot. Sorry, that is just a bs scenario -- who would put down a troop transport in such a position? In the old X-COM, you could at least use reloading to make such things bearable. Now it's just a difficulty curve you didn't sign up for.

Almost always, when developers decide players *shouldn't* be able to do something, they are just imposing their preferences on everyone else. :-(

You can't find rookies who can reliably shoot straight?

I know it was that way in the original. It was dumb then, and it's dumb now.

OK, my bad, I apologize.

Arthanor: Sure, it's an impressive achievement. But "jokes" on message boards are often misread; being flip carries that risk. It annoys me to see others' complaints treated that way. Don't like it? Whatever.

Hmm, thanks. Weird that it happened this way.

Probably time to give this a rest...

No, I use smoke most of the time, which mitigates against this change. I chose my tone carefully, to match the irritatingly self-satisfied original.

It's a bs change because one of the stated goals of this project is to be similar to the original out of the box. This isn't similar; it's just a stupid trap for the unwary. If it were a switch you had to throw, it wouldn't bother me.

Devs who want to be treated respectfully need to treat others respectfully.

Open Feedback / Secret Pacts that confuse me...
« on: August 10, 2015, 12:43:35 am »
I've been playing for 40+ missions. Then I lose the USA to a "secret pact" despite the fact that
  • My biggest and best base is in the USA
  • I don't think I've lost even one fight in the USA
  • I've been mowing down the aliens generally

I did have an alien base in South America that took me a while to detect (hovering aircraft don't seem to detect as well as they did in the original?) But I don't think I ever lost a country in the original based on problems in another continent, so I am confused.

This is in 1.0, not the nightlies, FWIW.

burn turn one, use smoke.

i added a small function to the spawn code to make all aliens within a short radius (approximately maximum fire distance) of your landing craft start off facing towards your ramp.

because i hate your soldiers and i want them dead.

A bullshit change for sure.
