Troubleshooting / Mouse inaccurate and unreliable through Steam Big Picture

I am trying to play Open Xcom on my tablet (ipad) via steam big picture mode.  When connected to big picture, the touchscreen works like a mouse, and outside of Open Xcom, anywhere I touch moves the mouse there.  Inside of Open Xcom though, the mouse is unreliable.  Sometimes where I tap the mouse appears.  Sometimes when I tap the mouse moves to some place somewhat near where I tapped.  Sometimes I have to hold my finger on the screen for a second or two for anything to happen.  If it matters I am playing open xcom in windowed mode.  I tried with and without OpenGL rendering.
