Help / Items larger than 3x2

Just wondering about doing a mod with bigger items and such, like; 1x4 (swords) 2x4 (rifles) or 3x4  (launchers/bodies), feels like whilst the vertical dimension can only be 3 squares due to the equip screen the width doesn't need a limit, just wondering before I go to deep , wanting to subjectively "renovate" a few of the item that are too small imo, is that possible without modifying the source code?
