Troubleshooting / OpenXCOM doesn't start

I'm trying to run OpenXCOM under Windows 10. I installed it from the 1.0 exe and added the universal patch manually. When I try to run it, the program runs for about a second (I see it in the task manager), but stops immediately after, with no other indication that the game is running.
