Suggestions / Play as the Alien Menace

Has anyone every attempted, or thought of switching the game so that you play as the Aliens?
Start with an offworld base equipped with Small and Medium scouts, and you have to scout earth for base locations and hunt out XCOM Bases, each month you can attack one city for a terror attack. As you build bases on earth you get bigger and better craft, and access to new alien races but you still select which race you attack with.
You could have it that your supplied by mars the better you do, the more equipment and materials you get each month rather than money.
I have no idea if this is even possible, but could be a fun switch to the usual game.
Anyone even know how to start?

Hi! I only stumbled across this today as I was looking for a Base Mod, but I am a little lost.
I currently am playing the "Steam" download of the game which is a little clunky, and game play slows down when I get to level 1 or 2 of a UFO. So from what I have read this could be my solution.
However I am a little lost as to how?! It says I need a copy of XCom to use this. Does this mean I can use it with my steam download? are they compatible or do I need to go hunting for the CDROM I had back in 94... which I have to say has probably gone the way of the Dodo at my mums place!!!
Any advice or comments you guys can give would be excellent.
P.S. long term player of this game, as I said I bought it new in 94 (as a 9year old) and I keep coming back to it. I love this game, and really look forward to having a go with some of these mods!
