I thought that contributing something for X-Com mods that I like to play might be good idea. While it was half fun and half pain, now I can appreciate the effort that went into spriting (those damned walking animations) countless items and units. The more enemy, armor and weapons variety, the better in my opinion, so feel free to use whatever I post here.

Its my first baby attempt into spriting, done mostly trough trail and error with the guidance of openxcommods guides with "stone age" methods of infranview and occasionaly GIMP. I hope they don't look too "cartoonish" to be of any use.

Outside of being a fan of XCOM, I also like Command&Conquer and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, so expect most, if not everything I will do to be directly inspired, or maybe closely resembling stuff found in those games.

First sprite was inspired by C&C 3 Tiberium Wars "Militiant Squad". As soon as I figure out how to extract UFOpaedia/Equipment pictures, I will start working on it. PckView can't extract those despite what guide openxcommods says apparently.

A competent job, not bad at all! I especially like the sneakers, though was probably a pain to draw. :)

Yup. I always thought that game somehow "moves and bents" arm and leg sprites, then I saw spreadsheet and I started to doubt in even starting spriting.

Here comes UFOpeadia sprites, however those I'm unable to test ingame as new tool I found can't convert PNG to SPK, only the other way around. I hope they work and keep the "quality".

I allowed myself to do a bit of fixing. Not much, but:

1) You used full black here and there. This is generally a no-no, because the game will treat is as transparent... So there will be holes. I changed the colour to almost-black and patched the holes.
2) The belt clasp was missing, so basically a 3x2 empty hole. So I gave them a new clasp, I hope you're okay with it.
3) The hands felt rather skeletal, so I gave them a bit more filing.
4) Same for the crotch.
5) The golden clasps were too flat for my liking, so I gave them some polish.
6) I also changed the palette to make it compatible with Ufopedia, in case it is needed to show these paperdolls there (same palette as bigobs).

All in all, minor stuff, except point 1) which is rather important.

Much appriciated and basically expected. Thank you. I couldn't check them out in game as I said and UFOpedia sprites I ended making late night, so I'm suprised there wasn't more issues.

Those sprites are made to be adjusted of course, just to better fit mod's aesthetic.

"Golden clasps" were rather supposed to be lights as seen on imagine in the first post, but them being simple clasps actually makes more in game sense.

I was modifying XCOM laser rifle so mag sprite is missing, however I quite frankly can't see anything that could be used as magazine in this weapon, so I guess Crystal at the tip could be used as one?

01 is the https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Raptor_automatic_rifle
I removed the handle and added iron sights which this gun was missing. We can't make Starship troopers mistakes of not having them.

02 obviously a mag. Quite big, however I doubt that it could indeed hold 100 rounds of whatever it is shooting.

03 https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Falcon_pistol
Pretty standard looking, not much to say about it.

04 Pistol Mag.

15 https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Airburst_rocket_launcher
Sort of a RPG-7 upgrade that can be loaded two "Warheads?". I guess 2 rounds "Auto Fire" for rocket launcher might be fun addition to any arsenal. Sprite might too big to fit in 1x3 grid as I was working on X-COM rocket launcher base sprite.

16 As with the weapon this also was worked on X-COM rocket launcher missles. Its made that way so that It could fit where original sprite does so that I could test it in game. I guess those last two sprites need the most polish if they are to be added somewhere.

Oof. I completly forgot that the game uses different palette for each set of sprites.

Not only a palette recolor, but also a slight redesign in small details.

Its supposed to be RPG warheads for Airburst Rocket Launcher. I'm currently using those sprites as replacement for original weapons and ammo. I have 0 knowledge how to adjust how much space items take, so I used the most primitive way of replacing XCOM missles with two maracas.

I guess for mods that also have standard RPG and one warhead there takes 1x2 space, those could be also made closer together to also fit in that space, thus providing twice as much warheads which to balance could be weaker.

This is the largest size used by X-Com (barring some unconventional mods). Adjust accordingly.

First Tiberium War Brotherhood of Nod armor. Helmet and especially visor looks more like Second Tiberium War era model, but I think it looks way cooler than mere red goggles.

This time it was much easier and faster thanks to using Militiant sprite as base. I think that *soon* I will make even more advanced variant based on this, most likely Confessor

I hope I didn't messed up palettes. Female UFOpedia sprite might have "holes" because Infranview decided to radomly stop using the palette and then fix it while not seeing difference between perfect black and slightly brigher black.

Brand new* Post-Apocaliptic weapons has appeared!

0a - Taken straight from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3FPy_bqMsQ (16:44 mark). It appears like some kind of AK, but with atleast 3 if not 4 rotating barrels. I have no idea why (if this weapon would exist) it uses standard banana magazines, so instead I made it drum/box. Also ditched the scope in favour of collimator. I also decided to make metal in more of a "bronze" colour, because I simply can't stand yet another clean gray/black weapon.

0aa - Ammo box/drum.

05g - Grenade reskin for the Brotherhood of Nod.

06g - Soda can IED with fuse.

SCAV 01 - Did you ever wanted bolt-action pistol? No? Too bad, because gopniks got you covered. Confuse the weapon specs who would try to catalog it and suprise any bandit in bulletproof vest who could not expect something bigger than 9mm out of something that small.

SCAV 01ammo - Clip.

CDDA 0a - I saw the idea in CDDA. You take M2 Browning, strip unessentials, make it single fire (bolt action?), add tacticool stuff like wooden stock and grip (for those bold, or strong enough like a mutant for example), soda can silencer, makeshift bipod and half of binoculars as a scope and here you go. True Wasteland Sniper Rifle with custom paintjob.
No ammo as I leave modders for mods balance sake how many rounds it can take. Maybe handfull, maybe special strippers, or something like that.

Sorry. I have to stop using Infranview, or stop making those armors so damn dark.

With "Awakened" Cyborg that will come next it shouldn't have those problems.

Cyborg project takes a little more time, so I will break my sprite schedule with another bunch of weapons.

TOZ34STAL - Just as the name suggests its TOZ34 over-under double barrel shotgun. While many mods do have double barrel shotgun, this one could be used as a "sniper variant" with slugs.

TOZOBREZ - The same as above, but somebody got saw and a bad idea with it.

2xSLUG - Not much to say, simple slugs.

2xFLECH - Flechette, shell filled with sort of needles that pierce what buckshot couldn't, also fly further and as much tighter "cloud" of projectiles.

2xSCRAP - Handmande shotgun shells filled with various scrap.

STAL_01 - Slighty redesigned Gauss Rifle from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., could act as proto XCOM gauss weapon.

STAL_02ammo - Battery for Gauss Rifle.

BLYSKAWICA -  Weapon based on STEN, but manufactured in occupied Poland during WWII by ressistance members. Fixed stock and paintjob as addition. EDIT: forum doesn't have polish letters, so wiki "Blyskawica Submachine gun"

BLYSKAWICA_ammo - Magazine.


Outside of the weapons, I'm trying to sprite this https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Awakened?file=Awakened_CC3_Cncpt1.jpg however I have no idea with what trait to distinguish male and female cyborgs. I also don't know if I should make Awakened to have standard arms, or add fixed weapons like those visible on the picture. So this is me asking anyone interested in using the sprite to share his ideas, so I could adjust it accordingly.
There is also a question if Awakened should kneel. I can only imagine it looking silly.

Finally, the first Cyborg has arrived. Brotherhood of Nod Cyborg "Awakened". Children of Kane serve his will even in death. Perfect army that feels no pity, no remorse and never shows mercy, as mercy is for the weak. It could be a nice mechanic for dead X-COM soldiers to leave corpses that then can be processed into cyborgs like this one. War with Aliens can't be lost because petty morality hold us back from using the most out of everything we had.

This one was really taking its sweet time. Its atleast 10 times harder to create new legs that have nothing in common with standard X-COM sprite. I'm still kinda not proud from how the cyborg walks north-west and north-east and I might go back to fix it, but for now it works good enough I guess.

Since nobody gave any idea with what trait distinguish male and female cyborgs, I left them the same. I also decided to make kneeling sprites and as suspected, they do look silly. Standard arms are also left in place.

"Enlightened" should be pretty straight forward as he is pretty simillar to "Awakened". I guess it will be next.

I don't really put much thought to the names of the files. Most of them are called BIGOBS and XCOM_0 anyway.

And yes, it is supposed to look like that. I thought that it would be cool to make sprite of a dead/downed cyborg as a "mess". On the Spritesheet you can see death animations telling a little "story" of him getting shoot in stomach, his right arm and left leg and they simply fall off like a house of cards.

I thought so, and the bigob looks like that, bet the floorob is pretty weird - the torso is obviously in a vertical position.

Maybe a bit off. For now I will leave it with explanation that the leg left behind is what keeps it from being totally prone. Vertical corpse is atleast original... hehe  :)

I think I will fix it alongside two sets of walking animations.

Spritesheet with better walking animations and one "bugfix" where I accidentaly left arm I used as reference next to actual sprites.

The Enlightened rise!
More advanced Brotherhood of Nod cyborg "Enlightened". Designated elite infrantry in the army of The Marked of Kane. Not much left of a human inside, but some bones and brain remain for sure (according to wiki) https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Enlightened_(Kane%27s_Wrath) .
I hope nobody will be offended by the symbol that paperdoll is wearing on the cloth piece between the legs as it is supposed to be literally the "Mark of Kane" and Kane might, or might not be Caine ( https://cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Marked_of_Kane ), however a bit pixelated so its rather hard to notice, but still, you never know.
I have no idea if this cyborg is just direct upgrade to certain Awakened, or maybe completly different unit made out of living human.

While originally its big warmech that towers the battlefield, here its thrid chicken-walker unit. Could be both another cyborg, or pure robot (I removed blood from death animations and floorobs, but this doesn't exclude brain in a jar inside).

I have to figure out how to sprite weapons that are bound to the units, till that moment all of them have hands, or "talons" that allow them to use normal equipment.

I do tried to make classic leather jacket rookies and bandits, but colour choosen to be a jacket "fabric" just so happen to be colour of skin and it messed up the sprite. I might try to do Leather Coat bandits as they look unique enough. Maybe even I will try to repair broken sprites.

There is no Cheeki without any Breeki.

Here comes first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bandit variant. Black leather jacket, tracksuit pants, gasmask, work gloves and classic white and blue undershirt. No female variant as there were none in Stalker.

Three weapons in addition, two were posted on other thread, but they will be certainly flooded with posts, so this is better place for them. Thanks for shading fix Solarius Scorch.

First gun is a Bodeo Model 1889.
Second is FG-42.
Thrid is a Rocket Launcher from GTA2. The only successfull sprite "X-COMisation" from my "experiments". GTA2 has that Retro-Futuristic style that certainly fits X-COM and I might also try again with other guns. If everything will fail, I will simply try to resprite them instead of scaling them down.
It still might have issue with "rogue" pixels popping here and there.

Super! Agree on the GTA2 style, for instance I'd use the GTA2 shotgun  to replace the domestic one in xpiratez. Review fir some more detail: GTA (https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Weapons_in_GTA_(1997_game)) and GTA 2 (https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Weapons_in_GTA_2)

Example: a machnegun that may converted in auto harpoon rifle, just modify the bullets, look the attachment

Sure.

First is the quick fix of bigobs for bandit, because I noticed it uses wrong pallete.

And now its classic leather trench coat bandit.
This time I tried not to use method of "pixel checkers board" for paperdoll, I hope it looks better than the rest.

Sprite is too big to simply resize it without turning it into grey blob, so I repainted it. Lack of space prevents the use of harpoons, but bullets are better anyway. Also small addition of iron sights and potential front vertical grip.

Upgraded bandit leather coat with bulletproof vest and rebreather with air tanks for use in more polluted areas of the Zone.

IMHO, try to stay away from the checkerboard style, looks weird. I made some small "corrections", because I'd like to use it on my mod UNEXCOM (with credits, of course. Crediting is caring). I attaching here if is useful for you.

Those sprites are made to be adjusted as I myself take a bit of liberties with their style anyway. With each sprite my abilities should grow and corrected paperdoll is indeed usefull.

Meh. Plain old standard "civilians" aren't anything than I could be interested in spriting. No fun in that. Guns are different thing, they are easy and fast to make, to draw entire spritesheet, paperdolls, floorobs and bigobs is too much of a hustle to do it without any passion.

BTW, it could work more like a space suit than a swimsuit, because there is way more pressure underwater than on space.

Coolio. Glad to see my work finally make it to some mod.

Hard to tell what environment would fit SSP better. Looks like made mainly from rubber-like material, so guy inside could be crushed in bigger depths. However deepest SCUBA dive is about 330 meters and divers don't go deeper not because of pressure, but nitrogen that dissolves in their bodies and then formes painfull bubbles when going back to the surface that in some cases might be fatal.
In space it should be strong enough to keep steady pressure from breaking the suit from inside.

I guess it depends on what would anyone be willing to make it in his mod.

Another Sunrise modification. This time its kind of a hybrid with SSP. Proto-SEVA to be precise. Groundwork for spriting full-fledged SEVA suit, however Proto-Exo and Exoskeleton are planned to be sprited before it.

Up to the modder. They all have kneel position sprited, so there is nothing stopping from using it as armor for X-COM soldiers.

Proto-Exo is ready.
Support piece of machinery that allows single person to carry and handle much heavier weights, especially guns. Thanks to additional strenght, the torso is now protected by solid chunk of fairly thick steel "vest". Proto-Exo as a Prototype, suffers from reduced mobility, where sprint is only a mere dream.

Now I decided to polish a bit the old designs with missing features.

First is the Awakened cyborg with attached Machine Gun (It is machine gun in the game, however looks "generic" enough to be anything from laser, trough railgun, to plasma).

Second is the Avatar unit with arm laser cannon.

I still suck at making HandObs for units. This part is up to modder to make. If everything fails, that cool tool posted on the forum might work for someone. Example posted as the last attachement.

First is the EMP cannon for Awakened. Atleast it is EMP cannon in the game, just as with MG, it might be multiple things, like plasma cannon for example.

Second is both EMP and MG at once.

If anyone wonders what happens in the death animations, its supposed to be EMP/Whatever discharge caused by the damage.

These are very inspiring art assets, however it just doesn't match the game's sprite colors. Have you thought of using the original sprites or shp assets source or build from RA or Yuri's revenge.

You mean that few of those might use wrong pallete? Just tested spritesheet from EMPMG Awakened and it works fine. Paperdolls also seem to use the correct one.

Most of the sprites and especially cyborgs come from 3D era, so original sprites simply don't exist.

Is it about aesthetic, or how close they resemble their original form? I'm not really good at recreating stuff perfectly, I nearly always take some liberty with their design, because its easier and more fun.

Enlightened Cyborg variants.

During the spriting I thought of a fun, but maybe a bit ridiculous idea. Since Cyborg already looks simillar to a Crusader in armor, I decided to make EMP cannon look like a shield and then add sword. Might as well go full Cybernetic Knight, right? Atleast sword can be used separately if somebody wants, I think it looks pretty cool in some mutated gal hands.

Particle cannon with and without EMP will be next.

Zone Trooper sprite (as clearly visible) is just modified X-COM power armor, so migth serve as upgrade, or something like that.

Anybody knows any programs that compile X-COM sprites to see the final result, without the need to convert the spritesheet, put it into a game and run it? For some reason I can't screenshoot OpenXCOM (all I see is just black screen) so its hard to polish arm sprites with that bigass shoulderpads. They most likely need some adjustment for sure, but doing it the hard way is... Nothing fun to do.

Kind of a C&C Tiberium Wars 3 story recreation. Small Brotherhood subfaction created to combat Scrin invasion in simmilar fasion to XCOM. Basically kind of a TFTD "asset swap".

Great base for some easy and fast spriting projects, always can be used as it is.
Few examples:

Jerrycan and its IED variant, timed dynamite bomb, bottle and "professional" WWII molotov cocktail.

Designated anti-vehicle/armor unit shooting some kind of "cutting" beam out of its gun-mouth, or exhaust. Explodes when crushed by vehicle, so might as well probably explode when just killed with a gun too, atleast thats how spritesheet shows it.
Short range, but quite fast, not so good against infrantry.

It is supposed to be biomechanical insect-like.

I didn't had a chance to test the spritesheet in game, there might be small issues with unit position on the field, or with walking animation.

Supposedly some drug cartel made oversized SMG/Rifle shooting .50BMG from open bolt. Probably to shoot down helicopters.
Pretty cool in concept.

The other is Luty Submachine gun, popular due its design being simple enough to be homemade and released for everyone to grab. Designed as a statement that you can't really totally ban guns.
