Title: How to make this thing go on Mac
Post by: whiteredford on April 17, 2020, 10:13:37 am
This is my first time trying to mod openxcom, and so far I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Says on the readme to unpack into a "mods" folder which I can't seem to find. The closest thing I have of a mods folder is a folder named "standard" which contains the mods openxcom comes with. I've tried putting xcomfiles here, but it doesn't show up. Anybody know what do?

Sorry, never seen a Mac up close, but if it works like everywhere else, then your "mods" folder should be in "user" folder - the same as the one where your saves are. (Saves are in user/xcom1, or user/xcom2, or user/x-com-files etc.; the folder mods should be in "user".

You need to find the "mods" folder.
"Standard" folder is explicitly and intentionally not supported in OXCE.

I had the same issue on my mac :(

It was before I knew this forum existed so I just downloaded a program to run windows .exe and it works just fine. I spent something like a week copying xcomfiles mod into every single folder related to the game and it never "discovered" it as a possible mod.

I can't find the mods folder anywhere. I've tried reinstalling OXCE a bunch of times but it never shows up. It says it's in Application Support but it's never there.

AT that point I just found Wine Stable, which lets me use the windows version, which has the user and mod folder in the same place as common and standard.

I have no experience with Mac but can't you create the folders? Create a folder called user in the main directory. Then create a folder called mods within that user folder. Copy mod files into that mods folder.

There are multiple Application Support folders... the game tells you exactly which one you need.

This person had the same issue today... and was able to solve it after looking in the right place...

It's /Users/<youruser>/Library/Application Support/OpenXcom/mods

except application support doesn't exist for me in that location...

Run OXCE... go to Options>Folders... write down the name of the folder... find it.

If you can't find it in Mac's "Finder", try a different folder browser that doesn't hide stuff from you... for example "Double Commander", download for Mac: https://sourceforge.net/p/doublecmd/wiki/Download/

Good to know that that works. For now, I'll stick with my tried and true.

Here, I even started my Mac which I use 5 times a year, downloaded OXCE and XcomFiles, googled how to make a frikkin screenshot on Mac (Command-Shift-3 for heaven's sake! who invented that?) and everything works just fine.

Double Commander really helps. For some reason, my Application Support folder contains nothing about OpenXcom, but with DC, I've finally found it. I've put the xcomfiles folder in mods, but it still doesn't show up in the mod list.

Extract the mod directly, without using the "openxcom_xfiles_1.3.2" subdirectory.
