How is the calculation Research Progress working?
Example:
I am researching a FLOATER NAVIGATOR.
The following lines are in the savefile:
- project: STR_FLOATER_NAVIGATOR
assigned: 1
spent: 231
cost: 232
In the game the progress is showing as "bad" even though the next day the research is finished?!
If i assign 10 scientist the progress is showing as "average" and the remaing days are in both times only 1 day.
I hope its clear what i mean.
If the calculation were more accurate, you could use your scientists more focused!

Ok thanks, i will have a look at this tomorrow.

The status shown is more about comparing how many scientists you have assigned to the overall cost than the remaining time, though progress does matter a bit.

It's telling you how fast it's moving along, not how much time is remaining.
-
Which means that it's really only useful to gauge how much the average research cost is which is useless now that exact average cost is available on Ufopedia. Its good that you cant calculate remaining time from it but would be nice if it could hint to whether you had a good roll or not. (once you get passed unknow progress bit)
If you dont track how many hours youve spent and know the research cost though, you can use it to set a limit for research waste at the cost of possibly delaying the project.

Correct.
From my own experience:
Excellent completes in ~1-5 days
Good completes in ~4-12 days
Average completes in ~10-25 days
Poor takes at least a month but could take much longer
I've never seen Bad and I don't know how little research you need to reach that mark, but it seems like it's going to take years (plural) to complete.
