I have a lot of jet troops, and I am not sure if I can blow holes in the alien ships.

A fusion torch can open a hole pretty reliably, and a mining laser does ok too.
Unless I've gotten a lot of horrible rolls even a barrel bomb can't breach outer UFO walls.

Heavy chainsaw works pretty well and doesn't cost a lot of TUs, but unlocked quite a bit later compared to the fusion torch.

Terrain(like ufo walls) works like having 1hp and a very high armor. So anything that overcomes the armor destroys the object. Ufo walls are somewhere in the 150-200 range i dont recall exactly.

UFO walls are 100 in vanilla X-Com, but explosives do 50% of their stated power to terrain by default, and non-AoE attacks do 25%-75% damage by default. This means any explosive over 200 damage would always penetrate UFO walls, and any weapon over 133 power had a chance of doing it, better chances with more power. In Piratez, look for weapons that say they deal increased terrain damage or are over those thresholds.
