Title: Is there a penalty for using the Psi-Amp one-handed?
Post by: Nerva on November 22, 2016, 12:43:04 am
The wiki for the original game says the Psi-Amp is a two-handed weapon, but it is unsure if the normal penalty applies for using a two-handed weapon with one hand -- the talk section has some discussion of testing it out, but there's no results listed.   So I have two questions:

1)   Does anyone know if the original game had a penalty for using the Psi-Amp one-handed?

2)   Does anyone know if OpenXCOM has a penalty for using the Psi-Amp one-handed?

Can anyone answer the above questions?

Even on this Ufopaedia page, the topic is dubious, see the discussion page - nobody actually tested, in the last 4 years.
If I had to guess :
- Somebody noticed in the datafile that the item has the same flag as two-handed weapons (offset 50[0x32] in OBDATA.DAT), and conjectured that the game may take it into account.
- My opinion : If the game actually took into account free hands, veteran players would have noticed. We know this flag IS tested for shooting actions specifically (mods of the original game can tweak it) , but I highly suspect that it is not tested in the blaster launcher's "launch" action, or the stun rod's attack.

For the original game, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just two-handed to draw the sprite as such.

I think that's an excellent theory.
