Title: Saved game folder empty. Nightly Build. How can I find the saved game files?
Post by: Lion66six on November 06, 2016, 08:22:56 pm
The saved game folder appears to be empty. A few quick details.

I have a few installs of OpenXcom. An original v1.0 install and then a particularly nightly install.

The nightly is dated 2016-09-04 22:23 and I believe was recommended by hellrazor.
I have his Hardmode Expansion mod installed and running 0.99.2d beta.

Its installed into : C:\Program Files\OpenXcom-Nightly however the user / xcom1 folder is empty, as well as the xcom2.

How else can I identify where my saved game is located?

Can be several different things.

But I would bet $5 on Windows virtual storage (or whatever it's called). You have probably "installed" it in Program Files with non-admin rights and windows put it somewhere completely elsewhere and it just looks like it's there. And the same/similar for saved games...

If you are sure the saves are somewhere on your harddrive... just do a search for *.sav files on the whole harddrive... best with a tool like total commander or something similar (just not with a windows explorer), while enabling the option to show hidden files and folders beforehand.

And a piece of advice for the future: don't install anything manually into "Program Files" unless you are 120% sure you know what you're doing :) It can only cause problems. OpenXcom works just as fine when extracted on the Desktop, into the Documents, or anywhere else in a non-protected directory.

Try an OpenXcom folder in your Documents.

This is 99% what's happening, only programs run as admin (i.e. installers) can write into Program Files: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20150902-00/?p=91681

Thanks all. Forgot to mention that this is now sorted.

Had to install a hard drive and disk catalog application Wincatalog or something, catalog my system drive and then use it to find the .sav file because Windows Searches suck.

Found it, many thanks. It was in a virtual drive thing. Hiding.
