Title: How do I mod my files to make my Hands stronger?

Just getting back into playing X-PirateZ, but I just remembered that my units have a tendency to be a little on the weak side sometimes (I've read that, overall, they're worse than XCOM soldiers.  What do I edit to give my gals better starts from the get-go?

Your Hands are faster stronger and tougher than normal humans, they aren't as good at psychic stuffs though.  Your starting crew are guaranteed to have higher minimums compared to normal Ubers, so my advice is to start your game and see what you have before trying to mess with it.

I've read that, overall, they're worse than XCOM soldiers. 

The opposite is true, but some might start low on a few stats.

I find that I get gals with terminal lack of strength of about 18 pretty often, but supermutants with 61 strength aren't that uncommon either.  Not sure if the random stat distribution has even been changed at all from the original, it probably just wasn't that noticeable because almost everyone could carry a single Heavy Plasma.

Starting strength bottomed out at 20 in vanilla, and the bodybuilders started at 40.  I think the max is 50?  In X-Piratez, it's 10-50 starting, up to 80, but your starting gals can have up to 55.

Unless I'm just crappy at this, I feel like my piratez are getting killed a little too much for my liking.  How do I improve their potential stats (that is, the lowest and highest their stats can be)?

By modding their attributes.

Look for the values in Piratez.rul for minStats, maxStats, and statCaps, and either edit them there (not recommended - you'll have to redo it when you update versions), or make a mod for this tweak by copying the relevant sections of the soldiers: header and edit there.

Unless there's some weird sort of anti-hacking feature, modifying my piratez' stats in the ruleset causes the game to default to regular OpenXCOM, regardless of whether or not the XPirateZ mod's activated.

You have a syntax error there (probably some indentation problems)... and OpenXcom has therefore turned piratez off.

How the hell did we arrive at a world where cheating is the first answer, when facing even a little difficulty? I miss the arcades.

And yes - if don't know what you're doing, better try making a sub-mod for piratez, or ask someone here to do it for you, than modify piratez proper, since you'll easily get yourself in a mess. The egine simply disables any faulty mods on startup.

Great, now the black market's messed up!  I'm trying to double the min and max stats of my piratez, as well as doubling how high their stats can be trained, and  the stats cap.  Could someone here make a mod that'll do that?  Cheating, I know, but cheating can be fun too (besides, for a human sub-species called the Ubers, they're not all that uber in my opinion.)

Here - unzip into the mods folder, edit the stats in soldiers.rul as you see fit, then activate the mod.

Just copy the trainingCaps: sections from Piratez.rul into the appropriate places in soldiers.rul, then edit.

The only real problem that you are facing is that your hands are inexperienced.  In this game they quickly improve if you get them some time beating and shooting things. 

Just get an Aircar and mount the Charger Laser. (Cunning>Contact: Car Dealers).  Shoot down civ shippings, and harvest their crews (stunning where possible for more rewards). 

The gals at their max are superior to vanilla xcom vets in all aspects but Psi/voodoo.  This is by design.

If you just make all your gals superheros at the start you greatly reduce the amount of satisfaction that this mod provides by watching them improve.  Heck, we even have soldier diaries now to track details of the missions they participate in.

Or you can just kick out the weaklings and hire new Hands.

I never do that, but it's a perfectly valid option.

Yeah, for cheating... er I mean modding, you need an editor that can handle the finicky nature of YAML syntax.  Everything is in a hierarchy of spaces, two per level. I your editor uses tabs, it breaks YAML.   I recommend Notepad++.   Turn on view characters, so you can see the difference between tabs and spaces.  Also there is a tool to bulk convert tabs to spaces.

Whenever I want to do this I mod the Piratez.rul file with notepad+ then change all the hired soldier stats to 100 or higher.

I generally don't like doing that since personally it's more fun to have weak newbies who can get stronger after being sent on meat grinder missions.

In the arcade era, people would totally mod their games, built little adapters, opened up the machine, hooked them in, and suddenly PacMan was Mrs PacMan and much harder. :)

Most famous one, which became official. I'm sure there were others,  that I'm unaware of, maybe even to make the game easier.

I'm sure most arcade owners frowned if a player came in from the street and started to gut their machine :P And even if a machine was modded, it was unique, since modding required hardware.
