For some time now my "best" armours were Tac Vest and i was unable to unlock anything "better".
By accident i attacked two landed Spartan Supply Ships and got a handful of Tac Armour, Tac Armour(H), Heavy Armour and Defender armour.
Unfortunally im unable to examine these armours, so i just randomly equip my guys with them.
What is the path to unlock "better" armour from Tac Vest onwards to produce, or are you supposed to aquire the better armours by raiding instead of research and manufacture ?

Interrogate moar people! and research anything that seems to be related to armor.

AncientSion, you probably know this, but you can see the armour's stats if you display the soldier stats in battle. Stat mods can also be seen there. Weight can easily be deduced by putting the armour on and off. The only problem are resistances, which can't be deduced.

The easiest way to get stats changes besides having it in the pedia is to just go in the soldier page for a gal wearing an armor with no mod, then equipping the armor. You will see the changes immediabely (the inner color moves, but not the outer, darker one, and the numbers change).
You can indeed see armor values when in battle mode as well, but resistances do have to be guessed at.
The ship you raided contains "midgame" armors, and can be a boon if found in the early game (like in Meridian's LP). I am quite annoyed it spawned on a different continent when it popped in my game. It is not the normal way to acquire armor though. You can get one upgrade for tac vests and a pretty useful variant quite easily, then yes, interrogations, analyzing loot and some weapon analysis can be helpful.

Use the stickied tech tree to get to Revenant. It is not difficult to get to and is immensely effective armor.
