Title: Want to help out?
Post by: Dioxine on February 17, 2016, 11:01:40 am
Greetings
Here I will be posting things to do for anyone who wishes to help with the developement; things I either lack time or skill to do properly. Naturally everyone will be fully credited.
First wish is to improve the Mortar graphics, since my sprite isn't so hot and the weapon is quite commonly used. Anyone up to it?

Inventory, battlescape or all?

I wouldn't mind helping out here and there, and can do a bit of spriting sometimes. It'll be pretty rare and random though.

I'll be back in a jiffy (ie, 2-3 days).

ps. you are totally wrong about the Assault Cannon w/Expl. Balls not being OP. There's better artillery, but none cheaper or more accessible that early. Half of it is the game engine's fault though (concussive, within 3-squares hitting under armour, the usefulness of arcing weapons, etc). If only the game wasn't based around live captures.....

Everything counts in large numbers, and 4-6 cannons are easy to get and make the ammo for. Then again, prods are almost free in comparison, and are amazing for where they are on the tech tree.

Anyway, I'll chuck something together in psp7 for battlescape paper-doll and inventory. Do you still want the "army" look, or tech it up a bit?

I can't see how Assault Cannon is OP while you can have superior Grenade Launcher for a modest investment of 30k apiece, and its ammo is only twice as expensive. Unless you're saying the GL is OP as well :) The only advantage Cannon has is more precise Snap Shot.
Although you might like the fact that Assault Cannon will get some upgraded ammo soon.

Anyway back to the topic. About the mortar I'm most concerned with inventory picture, but I won't say no for updated battlescape sprites either. About the look - military or hi-tec - more on the plain old military side, yeah, but I won't say no for a slightly futuristic look. If you go overboard we can always have an upgraded mortar :)

Done and done.

Well, soonish. But unless anyone else wants to grab this request, this one's mine.

ps. Having many grenade launchers probably is OP, but it's not nearly as cool as lots of cannons. That you made. To fight alien gods. There's probably reasons why ACs are so good :)

Lowish TUs to fire (no stamina needed), reasonably accurate for snap shot, and no maximum snap shot range. It's Turian hunting for real girls. With all the balls necessary slotted quickly for easy access, and a few extra carried on their belt in case the engagement lasts a little longer. Really makes them whince when they see that.

I'll be watching this thread too, Dioxine.  I really enjoyed the spriting that I did earlier. :)

Another one :) I've been putting it away for a long time now, but it seems I won't do it that easily.

Basically a reskin of the Urban terrain is what is needed. 2 options:
1 - warzone-style, burnt walls, bullet holes etc.
2 - Soviet-style (dark concrete, greenish tiles)

Only this picture needs to be edited:

I've been chipping away at the urban terrain.  I've modified a few of the wall tiles in Warzone style.
Just throwing this up as a WIP.

Sorry for not getting back to you. Stressful time (lost my job), but there's upsides.

Heaps of time to help out with Xpiratez. I'll get onto the mortar sprites shortly.

@Ivan: Looks good so far! Now we need to finish this set :)

Because I was bored I decided to try and set up an IRC channel on freenode.

Which is #x-piratez at the moment.

Heh.  Thanks for the bump.  Got me working on it again.  All the buildings are pretty much there.  Still need to work over the objects.  I've already worked some of the crates over.

Hmm, as for the remaining tiles (merchandise) - maybe replace them with something more fitting, instead of simply damaging them? Like with sacks, barrels, boxes of ammo etc.

Ok, cool.  I'll look into it.

Ok, reworked the merchandise.  A few counters are left but more crates, a few sacks, some tires and a barrel are in there now.

Also, sumthin you didn't ask for.

I didn't save it in the right palette, just worked it up in and editor, so you might need to run it through PS to get it working.

Splendid work on the tileset! I'll add it to the release!

As for the interwin, well, I doubt it is possible to make it better, but 1) it is still kinda ugly, 2) you'd need to do it for all the ships... So not sure if worth the effort :)

Yup, just need to match up the colors. :)  I don't remember which are which off the top of my head. :)

Looks pretty fine:

Looks cool! But it also looks like it needs mod than one wall tile per wall style. It's ok for all clean walls to be the same, but it looks a bit repetitive if they all have thenough same stain (particularly the white one).

Stunned Corpses:

After brainstorming in chat yesterday, I volunteered to work on the corpse bigobs to provide an alternate for "stunned" units that wasn't bloodied and gibbed.

I have finished cleaning all the bloody corpses, but began to wonder if it might be good to have an even more distinctive indicator.

What if the stunned corpses were flipped in their facing?

as see in this image (dead, current stunned, flipped stunned)

If the flipped version is desired I will provide them.

At this point I need to work back through all the current corpses that aren't bloody, and provide a bloodied version of them.  Most of these are of the humanoid female form.

I like the right one. It's a little less gory.

Try to paint the blood in RGB mode, with half-transparent brush, then convert back to Indexed. The blood will come out as more natural - here it looks painfully ketchup-like.

Good idea, you rarely have more than one body on a screen so you can spare yourself the horizontal mirror.

Overall the blood pool feels too big and gory.

I've added a bit of transparency, changed the drain path to the side, and reduced the size of the puddle a bit, and I like the look now.

Thanks for all the feedback.  The collaboration helps. :)

I have complete reworking all the corpses.  There are now 266 bigobs.  I've put them all in one .zip foldezip folder and placed it in the Google Drive folder (which I have also cleaned out).   Unfortunately I wasn't able to index them, so I don't know if the palettes with be problematic.  I tried to stay as true as possible to stock colors.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3LA7DXD41YYcS00RnpHODMzN0E  here is the link again.

Per our IRC chat, I have them alternating facings.  As a general guideline, deads face Right and stunned face Left. ;)  because Arbitrary. Thats why. ;)
Also, they have all been saved as .pngs. no more .gifs

Is there a technical reason you've chosen .png over .gif, or it's just to make the format uniform and the .png was chosen more or less at random?

Thanks for that, it will be added in the next version.

No Technical reason, other than that the free online image editor I use ( pixlr.com ) and MCDEDIT only save to .pngs.   That and its one less thing to be careful of in the rulesets.  Many of Dioxine's early graphics are saved in .gifs, while the more recent ones tend to be .pngs as far as I can tell, as well.
