Title: X-Piratez, with the Bay12 community
Post by: Boltgun on October 23, 2015, 12:26:48 pm
Hello everyone,

I have been doing a play through of Piratez extended for quite a while with the Bay12 Games community. It turns out that Dwarf Fortress players do enjoy xcom, namely because the games share the ability to name units about their friends and watch them die horribly.

This is the story of Eve Jobs-sama the Big Boss, who is trying to show the trade guild, the government, even the star god themselves that they are threading into the wrong neighborhood, with distant help from the mutant alliance and the occasional friendly enemy. She celebrated success, suffered heavy losses. Rivers are flowing with the blood of swabbies. But she never gave up her Grog induced adventure.

Will she end up ruling the world? Perhaps not, but we can dream.

So without further introduction :

Let's play X-Piratez
Because X-COM was too serious

That's great because there is a new base called Troy. It is ready to terrorize the nearby countries but it lack one important thing: strong gals to show who is the boss. So if you wish you can be named there go ahead and ask.

You can also vote for a new base, after all there are factions who has been left free for too long and deserve some spanking.

Ha! Nice! You've been doing what I wanted to do, but much better than me it looks like. Congratz! It takes levels of dedication that I (visibly) don't have.. And to think of doing an actual LP..!

Martian Max reporting! Ideally a close-ranged support, decent/good accuracy and reactions (especially reactions!) with a rifle/LACC or whatever you are using that's good at snap shots and a melee weapon on the belt (pipe if not very fighty, or something like a short sword type otherwise). All of that, strength permitting, of course. If very weak, just a rifle to cover the crazy gals who charge forward!

Oh, and dead academicians, plenty of them. Thanks to Martian Max.

This LP is spoilerific, I post every research I go through, which gets funny sometimes because some updates made it backwards.

Feb 2602, Runts at work (https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151935.msg6606555#msg6606555)

Not much happened, the radars detected nothing fun, but this gave me the ability to focus on the workshops. I got 2 custom guns on Troy, lots of metal armor and synthsuits on the Cave of Booty, and replaced all cutlasses and axes with tech blades.

So it's was good uneventful update.

Nice to see Max being useful! Good work on taking on the shippin' with only a predator's crew! I don't think I'd try that (I prefer overwhelming force: the more one-sided a fight is, the fewer wounded I bring back).

Have you had any luck with transport ships? I'm at a similar game point (~a year) and still flying about in the Bonny waiting for an upgrade. Got a few interceptor types but no transports :/

This combat was like a pokemon battle when you bring the right critter to fight a guy who uses only one type. The gals were resistant to piercing and the enemies only had assault rifles. The only dangerous enemy was a guy with a flamethrower but smoke grenades are OP and ensured that he could not attack until he was too close to survive.

I did not have any new transport ship and the gals are still flying on the Bonny or a skyranger. The best I can produce is a Kraken and it's a better interceptor than a transport. I have unlocked a topic for a 'long range interceptor' so that's what I'll try next.

lol! What does it tell about us that we can explain things with pokemon analogies? :D

This feels like a reunion of the "Piratez Capt'n Union"! Meet your peers and exchange experiences to increase your booty to body rate!

In my game of Piratez, before it moved to extended, I had managed to get a bigger lander than the Bonny (bit faster too!). I think crafts depend on getting info on many enemy crafts. So I guess the answer is to catch lots of engineers/pilots and question them? I was interrogating a lot more last time.. so I'm trying that now. I had a lot of blueprints, but apparently not the right ones.

As an insider reporter, who already played the super secret next release, I'll give you a controlled leak: Kraken's passenger space will increase from 6 to 8! (Hopefully Dioxine won't sue me now.) But it's still more of a fighter than a transport.

That's good news! With that speed, it's not like it can act like much of an interceptor either.. So upping the transport is nice. If you have good enough gals and gear, it can replace the skyranger as it is faster, can down its own small shippings and carry the gals too.

It's a good thing because the skyranger is embarassing, also because I want a Kraken + 2 predator per base so I can down the bigger ships too.

To honor the memory of the sexiest sniper gun in the world, the gals attacka  supply ship and get hit in the face with explosives too big for the clumsy AI to handle. Not my favorite times.

Assaulting supply ships is a pain with all the gauss and baby nukes. I see a lot of church ones which I don't touch because there's chryssalids crawling in those. Traders ones look interesting for the power armor parts.

Yes I especially despise baby nukes. I don't think the AI handles it well and that feels like random death.

@Baby Nukes: Hum.. they worked pretty well the few times the enemy used them against me. Killed one gal and fried a few others. The problem with it is the damage radius. The AI needs to see its target, which means being within 20 tiles, and the radius isn't much smaller than that, so you end up with them killing themselves too. I also think it values other AI units less than gals, but that sounds fair. Losing a gal for 3 enemies still sounds like I am on the loosing side of things.

@recent game: Nice work! Lots of progress again. How's that hunting laser working for you? I disliked the lack of scaling damage compared to some other hunting rifles, but I see Max is making good use of it :D

Also, did you not upgrade to the last version? There's some nice stuff there if you like blunderbusses :D

(And you might have missed it like I did, the Heavy Slugthrowers research also unlocks a Heavy Slugthrower gun, which is actually quite a nice one)

Post by: Boltgun on December 01, 2015, 09:57:54 pm
Ah, I'll trim the Bootypedia to find what I missed.

Also the previous time I saw baby nukes, the guards misfired twice and painted fire in funny angles around the ship's pillars (and himself).

Anyway the hunting laser is great. It's an upgraded version of the hunting rifle, it's precise and does not requires a lot of TU to hit with a power that is slightly over a lasgun. Great to cover the frontlines.

Yes I especially despise baby nukes. I don't think the AI handles it well and that feels like random death.

You should despise it. It is specifically designed to be a random, unjust, cheap, and unfair death. Once you go after Supply Ships, gloves are off, man. If you try exploiting, better be serious about it, and prepare well.

Also, I'm streamlining the research tree, adding very cheap projects where there were automatic extra unlocks, so you have to research things like Heavy Slugthrower or Junk Pile separately, but it'll take 1 day or so, but you won't miss it.

It's okay, I am preparing to exploit the exploits out. I mean, the heavy gauss are a nice touch so the guards got smoke grenades to their faces.

Now I need to unlock gauss cannon ammo again because I lost it. But I suppose that was not meant to get it so early, I only had put a toe into gauss weapons and I could make ammo for the cannons already.
Title: Re: X-Piratez, with the Bay12 community

@Dioxine: Good news! I like the idea that every topic should unlock something useful, but the fact that the engine doesn't display automatically everything that's unlocked is annoying. Until they fix the engine, I think that's a good solution: Every research should only unlock one thing so it can be presented.

@Boltgun: How are you intending to exploit supply ships? I have an idea of sending lots of scout dogs/useless rookies with a few flying snipers with .. probably AC-HE which can be relatively accurate and the explosive ammo means they can't even hide in cover. Then a few witches to MC whatever is inside the enemy ship as soon as it is spotted.

It'll be an expensive endeavor for the frontlines, but gauss weapons, power armor parts (from those tasty trader supply ships) and baby nukes (especially for base defences  8)) are worth a few lives I'd say.

I'm taking it slowly atm because of christmas and also because of a new Dwarf Fortress version that provide the perfect content for the succubus mod.

Or at least post a screenshot of the setting you're using? I fear that my pc is not capable of support that, but i'd like to try anyway :) Whatever, thanks again!

I'm using sabr_xcomified, it's under the filter choice. It is the best visually imo, but it only work at certain resolutions :

I did not update for a while, I am moving in a new flat and some other boring real life stuff.

So meanwhile I compiled OXC from a git pull and tried to play TFTD in Ironman Superhuman without any planing nor patience : Hilarity ensues (https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151935.msg6723547#msg6723547).

My first attempt was also quite FUN. (https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=70414.msg6631160#msg6631160)

Piratez updates will resume shortly, meanwhile I try TFTD again and fail to detect any USO, fail every shot with HE ammo, and the aliens roll natural 100s. I think GM is cheating (https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151935.msg6752117#msg6752117).

haha! That reminds me of my own TftD attempt on OXC.. Build my base in/around the Bermuda triangle (seems like a good place to look for sea monsters?) Seen one USO zoom by to the South Atlantic, try to follow but fail. Figure I'll get a terror there, fine. Wait for something in my region.. nothing, get a terror in the pacific somewhere instead (?!) Then I get royally owned because apparently deep sea aliens are impervious to piercing weapons despite running around naked.. Rage quit ensues..

After a bit of research, I learn that TftD regions are really weird (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=File:WorldMap_RegionalZones_TFTD.png). Especially the South Atlantic going well north of the equator.. I guess the first alien invasion cause a change in the earth's axis of rotation.. But if you look at it, it's entirely possible to build your base at the very top of the South Atlantic region, then you will not see anything as the USOs all go for the middle/bottom of it and only ever get detected on the way, if you're lucky...

What a game..!

The country map is even worse. (https://www.ufopaedia.org/images/5/51/WorldMap_CountryZones_TFTD.png), it confirmed that I was located in the worst area, covering only a little corner of Mexico, Eurosyndicate and USA.

And look at that at overcrowded part of northern Europe.

Yeah.. TftD is designed to mess you up from the get go it seems. Building a base in the North Atlantic should be about as much of a no brainer as building it in Europe/US for EU, given the large amount of shipping going through (assuming things don't change too much by 2040..), yet it is one of the worst places to build a base because of how the regions work. You are guaranteed a mission in your base's region on the first month, but since the actual NA is split up as it is, you might well not see anything any ways.

Such a frustrating game.. but as an oceanographer, such a neat game.. :D

Nothing special, testing out the lascannon, getting the green lighter killed and failing at interception.

A lighter and a bong. The bong made him cough smoke, and I could not try the lighter because he died of an explosive death right after.

I haven't tried it yet, but I heard his smoke is pretty useful. :)

I'm dusting off my campaign. Here's a video where we look at our bases, our gals and at some dead spartans.
