How does this sound for the series description?

"Let's Play OpenXcom PirateZ features an amazing mod created by Dioxine from the OpenXcom community!  Set six hundred years in the future, humanity has lost the struggle against the alien powers and the earth is a stellar backwater peopled by different groups of mutants, aliens, and humans.  Leading your crew of space-babe-mutant-pirates, you must carve out a place for yourself in this chaotic environment anyway you can!"

Cheers, Ivan :D

I'm in - Put me down as Solid Sister. (aka Rock Sis)

Edit: ivandogovich - Sorry that should be Solid Sister, not  Rock Sis.  That was my original idea, not the one I'm going with. I probably should have been a little more specific.

ivandogovich - Thanks for the PM, Your right - Lets stick with Rock Sis

Try decreasing Interception Speed in the options, else you'll have little to no control over air combat (weapons usually fire twice as fast as in vanilla, and you need to keep track on your health). Thanks for bringing this fine Let's Play! :)

It's not boring, it's well narrated, it's just entertaining. Can't really find better words.

Damn, I knew it'd be awkward. :P Of course it doesn't mean that your LP is bad, or anyone else's! I just think Ivan's work is the most professional.

I just think Ivan's work is the most professional.

This is why I enjoy his videos so much, you can tell he puts a ton of work into them and does a great job of making every episode entertaining.  (I hope we're not giving him too big of an ego  :P  )

And again, no offense to anyone elses LP's, this is just what stands out with Ivan's videos to me.

Thanks guys. It's definitely not awkward or offensive... I watch Ivan since the very beginning (I knew him even before he started making videos from a different community). We grew together (on YT) and helped each other a lot. I was just wondering if it's something specific or his overall performance... and it's confirmed now... it's how everything fits so well together! It will be a sad day when he'll leave the scene.

I'll chime in as well.

First, I agree what's been said so far about Ivan's LP style.

Also, he doesn't take him self so "seriously" and has a sense of humor about himself that adds to the entertainment value.  He also a knack for funny phrases, and I like how he talks to his on screen characters like they're real people.  Of course, I've mentioned before, that his post production for music, audio quality, and putting the pieces together is top notch.

EDIT:  Probably should mention, Meridian - I thoroughly enjoy your OXC LP's as well.

Na JK. I am lazy. I do no editing and record my videos with a crappy free player called Microsoft Screen Capture 4. Its old, it problably gets 15 FPS. The encoder/editor is garbage. One of these days I should upgrade to bandit or something... learn video editing. You know those cool things that people doing videos already know.

:'(

Sheesh, can't give anyone praise without offending someone :)  Yours have been great too.  If there is one constructive criticism I would have to give is that your voice is still a little "muffled" in the output.  The game sound affects tend to be louder than you, so when I crank up the volume to hear you, I get blasted by guns and dying aliens in my earbones :)  I really am enjoying all the LP's.  It's also quite fascinating to see the different tactic styles.  I think Meridian is ruining me when I watch other people, because I cringe when I see someone "doing it wrong" tactics-wise whatever that means!

Okay.. enough threadjacking :)

One thing I've noticed with Ivan is the tone and rhythm of his voice, which can be quite varied. I used to work in giving presentations and one thing we're trained to do would be vary your voice when presenting a topic: nothing bores more someone who is listening by talking in the same tone. One should laugh, make weird noises, switch between a high and low tone, etc.

Thanks for being a critic JG. I will most certainly play with my volume sliders and get it right! 8)

Also Ivan does a good pirate voice. I would love for the accent to carry through the whole episode! (at least for one episode)

Thanks all for the feedback and discussion!  I love the thread jack! ;)

I do feel like the discussion is a productive one, and its helpful for those of us that do LPs. :)   There are certainly ways we can all improve.

@JG. I agree. Meridian has "ruined" me too.  His play is so good, I'm often thinking "doh! Meridian wouldn't have done that!"  ... Though he has taught me a ton and greatly improved my own play, I have quickly come to the conclusion that he is an ideal that I can only strive to attain.  I also realize that I'm guaranteed enough "Ivan Moments" that I'll have things to laugh about. ;)   When it comes to watching others like Necroscope and BattleBunny who have a much more casual approach and favor uniform weapons on the squads and zerg rush tactics, I have to reset my mentallity to not expect perfect play like Meridian's  ;)

Hm.. some scattered LP thoughts and philosophy.
-Before I ever considered doing LPs I did some analysis on what I find appealing in watch LPs.  Quill18 is a perfect example, and I have been a huge fan of his for years.  I think what I love most about quill (aside from the fact that he plays strategy games in genres I really enjoy) is his enthusiasm.  He really enjoys what he is doing and it comes across.  That is my fundamental rule for LPs.  Play something you Like, and have Fun with it!  Your fun will be contagious, and your audience will have fun too!
- "Make the best product you can" - my friend Rendog, gives this advice regularly.  Audio cleanup was probably the biggest jump for me.  Baergo told my the background whine and hiss on my first Terror from the Deep vids was very distracting and to try Audacity for noise removal.  I checked yt vids on the subject and figured out how to separate my vocal track.  I clean it and sweeten it (EG settings to boost the bass a bit) for every vid.  I also started mixing all the background music in those series.  Its very time consuming, but I loved the result.  During playback, I'd often raise the volume in spots just to hear the music behind my commentary. ;)  Its also a tricky balance to keep the music down enough so its not distracting and the commentary needs center stage any way.  Thumbnails are important too, as they brand your series and show  you are series about making a decent product.
- Stock intros and Outros.  Viewers come to expect them and our sub concious brain automatically synchs up with them when we start to watch.  It also gives viewers a chance to adjust volume, screen size etc.
- Beg borrow and steal! If  you see something you like in another LP, try it out in yours.  I loved the way Meridian would talk to his soldiers "Ravski?  Can you come help us over here?"  I hear his voice in my head when I type that. :)  I started doing that in my TftD series after binging on his TftD series.  (Which is amazing BTW. Well worth the watch if you haven't seen it already).
- Spread the love.  I like to give shoutouts to others I enjoy watching, and telling my viewers about other cool series, etc.   Of course viewers love shoutouts too, so that is really cool if you can incorporate that in.

Anyway. Enough Jibber Jabber!   Episode three will be out in about 1.5 hours. I'll have one M, W, F.  I'm itching to get to episode Seven (I've recorded up to 6) but I have a heavy school load this week, so I'm trying to stave it off. ;)

Cheers, Ivan :D

- About the soundtrack - I'm not sure the original music sits well with the mod (haven't noticed this since after hundreds of hours playing XCOM I'm always playing with the music turned off)... maybe you could play a custom one in the background? Could be as simple as using Deus Ex music, or even UFO Playstation music mods available on this site... It's always, like, you know: ugh, Ivan's awesome into music is over, now we get to same old boring vanilla XCom soundtrack :)

Yeah... the biggest issue with Background music is digital rights and claims against music in LPs that can cause your vid to be pulled from YT.  :(  soo... unless I knew that the music (ie Deus Ex, which I've never played btw) was basically free for open use, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it.  In  episodes 5&6 I switch it up to the MT32 Roland version of the original which is surprisingly more rich.   I'm not above trying out the PSX version either, as I have never heard it, nor beyond using Cydonia's Fall.   I'd love feed back for those. :)

4 hours have passed and youtube still displays null thumbnail.

Do you hava any specific schedule for this series by the way? Having a new video every other day (with Meridian`s FMP LP inbetween those) would be really awesome :)
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9b) Now Playing!
Post by: ivandogovich on April 08, 2015, 10:36:20 pm
Yeah that null thumbnail is driving me crazy.  I'm not the only one, but I've tried re-uploading it a dozen times already today.  I'd probably have to nuke the video and re-upload it to make it work and I hate to do that. :{  (all the comments go away, etc).

My schedule is typically M, W, F, 7:30 AM release on Pacific Standard time.  I'd like to maybe do more than three a week, but school/work can get in the way, so I have kind of stuck with the 3/week.

I believe Meridian is on the same release schedule but about 12 hours a head of me ( maybe its like 10 hours).  I usually watch his episodes that night before mine air the next morning. :)

Cheers, Ivan :D

@ivan: if you haven't done that already, try switching to one of the 3 default youtube thumbnails and save... then wait a few minutes, just for good measure... and then upload a new custom thumbnail... then clear your browser cache, reload the page (ctrl+f5 or something) and see if it helped.

Renamed Indonesia to Pirate Straits. I wanted some countries & cities to keep their today's names, but this is just too good to pass :)

Also strange thing, you should be able to produce "the CoV" now (flintlocks and BOMBS), but it didn't pop up... fixed that for the next patch, but even without a popup, it should've appeared on your production list anyway. Might be pretty late though to say that since you're a bit further into the game :)

Looks like it is Hobbes' character who is on a good way to become the leader. Best of luck Hobbes!

Awesome! I think Pirate Straits is so fitting!

I did check and did find "the CoV"  (Looks pretty situational and expensive tbh ... Ok. I looked closer. the raw materials work out to about 5500 I think.  Thats half the price of an IED.  One can be put together in a day, so thats pretty fast and not too expensive.   Just, how difficult is it to actually use it without being a suicide bomber? ;)

And old One-Eyed Priscilla has had some clutch shots! :D

Well not that expensive if you have looted a lot of HE grenades and don't know what to do with'em :) Range is half decent if you have 50+ Str, but yeah, it's a sub-par weapon, even with its huge blast radius. But HE packs cost 10k apiece here :)

Scoreboard!
Being honored with such a great LP, and a mighty fine crew which has assembled, I've had this idea... a Scoreboard! Basically this will be a human-controlled version of sort-of Shoes' Commendations mod, which, sadly, is incompatible with pretty much anything. And yet mighty heroic deeds (and mishaps) of this crew need to be recorded!

If I got some details/names/etc. wrong, sorry and please correct me!

Rules/Scoring
- Missions are broken down into total and a number of sub-classes. The "hardcore" subclass means a ground mission against a very well-armed crew. The dash separates missions taken from missions won (winning means a soldier is left standing on the end of a victorious mission. KIA and unconscious don't count). Each of these numbers is worth 1 point. These classes overlap, so ex. winning a night Pogrom mission nets a soldier 6 points.
vs. () breaks down how many missions against which faction. No score for that, just keeping the track.
Most of the other awards will be marke M-xxx, where xxx is the number of the mission the deed took place.
- First Timer Awards
These are given for doing something first time in the campaign and worth 2-5 points
- Misdeeds
Particularly bad or silly stuff. Worth 1 point in general.
- Medals and Commendations
Pretty self-explanatory. Team Player awards are for helping others while foregoing a chance for personal glory. Worth 2-10 points or even more. Medals for multiple deeds will be granted on 3rd, 8th and 20th instance. Promotions also go here, first one is worth 5, the second 10, third 15 etc.
- Scars
Awarded every time when hit by enemy fire. You do get them if you take 0 damage, but only if the weapon had around 50% chance or better of actually inflicting damage. Scars are worth 5 points each.
- Kills/Takedowns/Catches
Catches are granted for either stunning victims (only first time counts, no re-stunning), or, in the case of an aborted mission, also for carrying stunned enemies on board (only those actually caught are counted). Downing an enemy = dropping them without insta-kill. Again, if the enemy gets up and is killed/stunned again, score is awarded only for the initial takedown.
Kills, Stuns & Catches net you 2 points for weak and average enemies, 3 for tough ones, 4 for elites, and 5 for catching the (almost) uncatcheable. Extra catch points: 5 for a Leader-tier, 10 for Commander-tier.
NEW: Vessel Kills. The last hand on board is considered to be the pilot of a craft. They'll be getting Vessel Kills if their craft manages to shoot down an enemy vessel.

I will start the Scoreboard in the next post. If I missed something, it will be updated/explained later.

Maybe we could move the scoreboard to a separate thread? I think it deserves a "first post" placement... so that we can easily find it.

Yeah, It would be a pity to have it buried in this thread, as I continue to spam new episodes.  Another alternative might be Google Docs or Google Sheets if its easier to manage and present there.  Its just so brilliant, I'm still in awe!

I can move the scoreboard to a new topic, I was just hesitant to be so bold.
The fight is so brutal. Some of them could be perhaps saved, but... it's easy to say so when watching a record, harder when actually playing. But dogs can heal and carry grenades too! They only need to drop the stuff before the end of the turn... And that RPG could be used to snipe... ahhh!
Anyway, salute to the fallen. Their bravery was not in vain, they took a good chunk of the enemy elites with them and it looks the attack is starting to crumble!

You might try your luck on Data Discs, these are only 5 scientist-days on average, but the results may range from awesome to pretty much useless. Also a protip: you might want to pull out one of your assault rifles off the 'ventura and research it :) (but only if you want to take the firearms route).
Also, Slave AI / Nuclear Fuel / Ship Engine researches are noticeably longer than the others.

Overall:
Niculinux and Simone's characters still are in the solid lead... posthumously, while Jstank's Stanky Cap managed to get to third place while staying alive. Amongts the living, Meridian's Cutlass Jo is close second, while the rest of the gals got a solid score boost, putting them on the level of Stabby Rock Sis, who is missing her 2nd mission now. How likely is Cutlass Jo to keep her 2nd place is unknown, but probably unlikely, considering how she managed to blast herself with her own RPG and will spend over a month in the sickbay.

Pretty everyone who managed to get really heroic acts ended up dead in that Hideout Defense. Might be a lesson for the new people :) Stealthy Cuttlefish's promising career has been cut short, but she will be remembered for not letting the Guild Engineer die, who was maybe the most important prize of this mission (aside from loads of money). Neptune's Nook's Galbrush Threepwood got the first Slaver rank, with capturing of a Guild Rep no less, but was likewise cut down in short order. These two who died young provided hope for a better future for everyone who survived!

EDIT: Also everyone from the starting crew got the "Career Rank: Comrade" (+5 points) for surviving 1 full month (you have to see 2 monthly reports for it to count as a full month).

EDIT: Aaand updated for the latest LP. Wily Tomcat made the best score of all the fresh bloods on this mission (12), congratulations!

So, as I understand it, slaves carry -1.5 space, so say, ten slaves would give you effectively 15 storage space.    Is this more efficient than a Vault?

Updated the scoreboard! Not much has happened yet, but:
- Gank Plank (Pilot00) gained a bunch of points, mainly by getting the Mostly Harmless killer rank, and managed to jump from 6th to 4th place, with 4 points lead over Minty Muffin (Justamuffinlover) and a 13 points loss to One-Eyed Priss (Hobbes). She might yet grab that 3rd place, with a nice scar and Purple Heart waiting if she survives this mission!
- Blonde Jasmine got Dangerous Desires misdeed (+2) for putting her desire to catch slaves over her own life :)

All the veterans will be also due for Experienced mission rank (6 missions)... if they survive, naturally :)

Favourite moment: throwing molotov cocktails :D
Take that! Oh?! Didn't light it up?! PLEASE!! Don't throw it back! (If only they would.. that'd be hilarious)

I've got a gal who'd like to join the crew too: Martian Max

I'm looking forward to seeing Max's adventures raiding the Star Gods' & friends!

Romulus Buckle, or rather The Chronicles of the Pneumatic Zeppelin (https://www.amazon.com/Romulus-Founders-Chronicles-Pneumatic-Zeppelin/dp/1611099188), is a weird swashbuckling series of novels (2 out so far, 3rd coming soon). It is set in LA after "Martians" came by and destroyed most of civilization. The population is surviving in clans. They fell back on steam power and fly about in zeppelins(!). But some have more technology than others... Made me think of Piratez immediately and when looking for a pirate lass name, the choice was easy.

It's not the next grand classic of this age, but I found it highly entertaining and so different from other fantasy or sci-fi, it is very refreshing. Worth giving it a shot I'd say. If you like Piratez' setting, you might well like those novels.

Isn't the nuclear fuel pretty important?  I remember you saying something earlier about it being a pretty valuable thing until you can start manufacturing it yourself.

I don't think researching nuclear fuel allows you to manufacture it (although that might be possible later). You can also buy some unlike in vanilla, and in my experience there are quite a few UFOs that land in Piratez so you can get enough to keep the Bonaventura going.

The only tricky part is the very beginning when you might exhaust your initial supply (but should be able to afford buying a few units to get over the RNG hating you). I've actually had to sell a fair amount of nuclear fuel (to much profit!) in my current game.

Getting some armour to keep the gals alive is the highest priority to me. so they can get experience and get you an edge through more TUs for rushing and hitting things in melee. Then getting new guns since the starting ones aren't great against the armoured enemies.

Yeah its a pretty much important research topic and a nessecity of manufacturing a boat load of things but unlike vanilla it is not hard to come by if you pick your targets (most UFOs here are making landings and carry muliple sets of engines) and you can buy it too as been said.

I am with Arthanor though, since Ivan has already researched a fair amount of ammo types he should focus on armor now.

Less dying = more smashing! What's not to like? Even the basic Tac Vest helps a quite a bit with face tanking, which makes all the difference when breaching.

I've only listened up to ~16 so far, but here's some stuff I have found to work well:

Squad setup:
~2-4 breachers with the heaviest armour I can get (Currently Tac Armor). They lead the way and draw the fire.
~4-6 scouts with armor that allows good mobility (Currently Tac Vest). Most of the time if you spread well, you take shots to the face so even Tac Vests work well.
~2-4 support gals with guns (for reaction fire/taking out annoying unarmoured targets like those close to civilians) or flamethrowers (pretty good against personal armour), smoke armour and harpoon guns if possible to reach out and stun unarmoured hostages-to-be (mainly G.O.s and Hostesses)
2 snipers that stay on top of the bonny (you can place the smoke between them and the enemies instead of on top of them)
The crew: Everybody else, following up with whatever weapons are most suited to them.

The breachers and scouts usually will not stay in smoke too long and are more worried about tanking shots. The support gals however will often stay a bit behind in smoky areas and rarely come under fire (since the scouts and breachers will get targetted) so smoke armour works well.

Another thing: Most enemies will survive one gun shot, so you can do things like: shoot them with a support gal or pistol, rush them and punch them until they drop, then let the "sweep crew" come up and use bandages/boozes to cure fatal wounds so they don't die on you. This way, you reduce the amount of stun damage that you have to do up close, so your gals are more likely to be able to stun and run for cover than to be stranded next to a standing enemy.

Edit: Oh man.. just finished #16.  :'(

Whenever I can afford it! Mortar ammo is not cheap!

My sniper rifle gal keeps a grenade launcher in her backpack for heavier enemies, but the range on that is a bit short.

@Ivan: if I get the Statstrings mod fixed up, do you think you would use it? Providing something for your LP might be the incentive I need to take a break from pillaging ;)

For your custom .exe, another function that I remember was pretty cool (although I can't remember if it was a mock up or an actual pull request..) was a two categories system for "alert numbers" for seen aliens. Red was aliens the currently selected soldier sees, blue was aliens seen by other soldiers. It would be VERY convenient and that way you don't have to cycle through all your soldiers to check if you missed something.

Hey Ivan, would it be possible to make the episodes one hour long instead of 30 minutes? The current format is woefully short, when you really get into it the episode ends.

Of course I totally understand if you don't have that much time or something.

Yeah, unfortunately 1 hour long episodes are a bridge too far right now for me.  30 minutes is about right in terms of recording/editing/producing/uploading/marketing etc. and keeping on a 3/week schedule.

My real life school load has just massively piled on for my last class. I'm not sure I can even keep up my desired schedule.

Just finished episode 20. Nice progress! Metal armour is a great one for the early game. Although it might not stand up to pogrom-level mayhem, it is very nice against traders. If you think those are heavy/restrictive in terms of TUs/Stam, wait until you get the advanced tac armors!

If I may recommend something, it would be a heavy flamer (you already have the research available). Those things are deadly! I find myself cackling madly using them. I am surprised you have not given the basic flamethrower a try as well, that's still pretty decent (but nowhere near as good as the heavy flamer). Getting up close and hitting multiple times, you can rack up a fair amount of damage that also ignores personal armour (and is amplified on certain targets). I'd expect the power armour dudes to be fireproof though, unfortunately :/

And on the "Ivan moments", I think they make the charm of your LPs. You are very entertaining to watch and very easy to relate to as well, which keeps drawing me back (and reminds me that it is a game and I don't have to be such a perfectionist when I play mine). I'd say you have helped me enjoy the game more.

Thanks for the nice words!  :)  I'm glad its entertaining. :)  One of the things that I realized is that even failure can be entertaining, and its alot about the attitude that you bring to it. :)

And thanks a ton for the tips on the flamers.  I had no idea that they could even touch personal armor.  The damage was low enough, that I was pretty reluctant to try.  And the short range made me feel like just getting closer and bashing people.  I am going to branch out though, for sure. :)

Incendiaries are this weird thing that do damage that bypasses armour. It does an average of 6 damage for each hit, that is only modified by incendiary resistance. A flamethrower has 8 shots, so that can be a decent chunk of damage. Heavy flamers can tackle personal armour dudes, one shot academy drones (the mini cyberdiscs who are rather resistant to normal bullets), raiders and even finish off cyberdiscs.

The arcing is great to reach things behind some obstacle (even burned a cyberdisc by firing above a house!) and the 8 shots means you will likely hit multiple times, each of which might improve your firing accuracy. It's not as devastating as an RPG, but it is also A LOT cheaper to get fuel than keep buying rockets (which always miss in my experience any ways! :P).

Another cool weapon is the heavy machine gun. Get a gal with it on the top of the Bonny and she can kill 1 personal armoured guy a turn. (Don't move her though, HMG takes a LOT of TUs to fire). I've had more success with the HMG than sniper rifles, RPGs and even the mortar. More shots means it's more likely to connect a few times, and the damage is high enough to matter.

Anyhow, keep playing! As pilot said, I don't think you're failing even though you might not be as successful as you were hoping to be in the game. I am not watching to see the master of XCom play, I am watching to see how you face the challenge. Your LP is awesome.

Edit after watching Ep. 21: *Takes the bagpipe and plays Amazing Grace*
We can make it capt'n! I'll crank up the power feed to the cloning vats!

Some times there's nothing you can do and the game just sends you a big FU. This setup was pretty rough for a start of a pogrom. At least it wasn't at night :P

There's a few things that can help, like taking veterans with bombs/explosives to take out immediate threats at the front, or trying to rush enemies so they shoot at one (ideally armoured) gal instead of blowing many up, but XCom is known (and loved) because it is not trying to be nice.

Be bold Capt'n! Let's board 'em traders and get some loot! We'll show 'em next time!

A story where the heroes win all the time will be a boring story. Now let's hope the Gods of Random will throw some easy missions this month :) I'd recommend armoring every first-line trooper in Metal, at least those with 30+ Str - it's a very good armor against small arms and lasers (and this latter feat makes it the best early armor for Pogroms).

Ok.  We'll see what we can do, though I have zero faith in Gods of Random.

Question for you Dioxine:  is there a chance that you could relax the maps that block your ramp with piles of junk like we saw in today's episode?  I mentioned it to Hobbes and I think he was going to change it in the Terrain Pack.
I know it wouldn't have made a difference in today's outcome, because I was using defensive tactics and those don't work.  However, if you had landed in that location, what would you have done at the ramp?  Black powder bombed it?

Cheers, Ivan :D

Post by: Dioxine on May 14, 2015, 12:44:45 am
I'd have bombed it too hell all right :) But since it's Hobbes terrain, I'd probably use at least Dynamite, preferably a Hi-Ex pack to be sort of sure it'd be gone :) It is possible that the whole grenade tragedy was caused precisely because the piles of junk blocked some of smoke's dispersal. I'd have deployed by the front hatch in the meantime (turn 2, after smoking it). Also if going defensive, I'd have pulled back those troops who were standing in the door at least, to get some cover - not sure if it'd have helped, though... The only good option was to try and kill that guy, but it's hard to risk it when you have no idea who he is or how much can he survive...

Thing is - and maybe it's not much of a consolation - that there are 4 factions that can do early Pogroms (out of eventual 7), and you got one of the the 2 harder ones to deal with, so it'd probably end up in a bloodbath anyway, especially on that terrain (it has hidden goodies, but it's also very dangerous).

As for fixing the map, I don't have the skills to help.

Hi Ivan,

Nice progress on the research! I'm not sure how the timing of my previous post was relative to this episode, but just to make things clear with flamey stuffs:

- Inciendiary damage type deals on average 6 damage per hit regardless of the listed power. That's modified by armor resistance (ex.: some humans take more because they have burny clothes) but not armor.
- The Power actually determines the area covered by fire, so the heavy flamer will cover a larger area in fire than the regular flamer.
- Flamethrowers shoot 8 shots in auto, Heavy Flamers shoot 10 shots (and a clip has 50 shots, so you can autofire 5 times like the Pedia says). The multiple shots (and multiple hits) make it great at training firing skill.
- Flamethrowers shoot arcing shots, so even though accuracy is poor, you are likely to hit the ground next to the target and still deal damage. Even better as the gal gets better aiming!

And on a different kind of burny: SMGs are one handed, so even though they don't look like much, they're actually a pretty good sidearm. I neglected them too, until I unlocked acidic munitions. Also, 27 * 140% ~ 38 damage on caparace armor, which will deal damage sometimes, especially on other facings than the front (you do use UFO damage rules, right?), and the autoshot is really cheap for 5 shots.

Just be careful with the flamers, it's pretty easy to kill yourself if you come too close to the target :)

And make sure there is no gal in the very approprietly named "Line of Fire" ;) Even though arcing shot means you *can* send fire above her, it doesn't mean you will! (and especially not 8-10 times in a row)

Being on fire is deadly! (sent one of my gal to the sick bay for 2 months like that!)

Too bad there isn't a "Stop, duck and roll" button.. or a fire extinguisher item.

Oh..! My..! ******* What a tease! That's just evil!

Regarding your deployment, I think it looks alright, lots of smoke is good (although you might have been able to spare 1-2 of those grenades). Deploying in front of melee enemies sitting on top of stuff is a bit awkward.

The only things I'd say are: more guns & more people on the roof taking shots. You deployed alright, but you need to score kills (or at least hurt stuff!) more than that and the way to do it is with guns. Only deads and captives won't hurt you next turn.

You don't quite have the tech for really good guns yet, but in a bit, heavy cannons with explosive ammo are great. For now rpgs, boarding guns and machine guns are good medium range weapons, heavy machine gun and sniper rifles are good too for longer range. Having 6-8 gals with good guns allows to project some hurt without risking too much.

Everybody else should have a sidearm too for when they can't reach the enemy and for taking reaction fire. An smg with acid ammo is not bad, super fast snap shot, cheap 5 round autoshots and lots of bullets!. Magnums with Acid ammo and Confederate Eagles are pretty good too for gals with good accuracy.

Oh, and the flamethrower is a two-handed weapon. Although it looks badass to fire it one-handed while holding onto a black powder bomb in the other hand, that's reduces it's already tiny accuracy! Cook 'em lobsters!

But then maybe I'm panicking. Give it a try!

Just don't use this mission to assume that some weapon sucks. It's not a good mission for judging weapons.

Oh, notice that although Ivan has little in the way of guns, he packs a hell of a lot of explosives and other throwables - those are ranged weapons too, and powerful at that. And when he runs out, he has a large stash onboard to replenish. So it ain't that bad, even if he lacks really long-range capability. Even flamers and scatterguns will be way more useful here than in a normal mission. The only resource he needs to carefully guard are living soldiers :) My only complains would be that he:
- didn't upgrade from Pirate to Metal yet - really, there IS a difference;
- didn't take that couple of Tech Blades that were produced in the meantime;
- and, most importantly, what's the point of taking mortar if you only take 3 rounds? It will help, no doubt, but 10 would be more like it :)

Anyway, this mission is going to be so climatic. A pirate gal shooting crossbow at a green sea monster, how cool is that :)

A (stupid) advice: Avoid/Kill guys that shoot stuff at you, especially celatids :) Getting hit by a Celatid is usually an instakill. Oh and save your time, Celatids ARE immune to Acid, Lobstermen ARE nigh-immune to AP, HE, Laser... :) Another pointer - if a guy attacked by Incendiary is set on fire, it means he DOES take some damage from fire. Immunes cannot be ever set on fire.

EDIT: Regarding the tech: Boarding gun is a good research bet, it leads to important advancements in firearms area (even if some won't be immediately evident).

I am SO looking forward to the next episode! It should be interesting with the combination of unarmored green dudes and celatids, and super armored lobsters. I hope you can cook those! (and hopefully they don't carry anything ranged.. or rush you and snap those claws at the gals!)

@Dioxine: Mortar rounds are SO expensive I don't really feel like using them. I am waiting for the runts to figure out how to make some. 3600 a pop is not negligible when you are strapped for cash (I did the same as Ivan and went research heavy.. rookie mistake? Seems like runts first, get a good rum production chain going and then invest in research might work better). Also, you need a really fast gal to be able to recharge the mortar herself and shoot in the same turn. Going through 10 rounds in one fight would be a feat.

Grenade launcher ammo at 1750 or something is not cheap either.. Luckily I've found a way to make rpg rounds now, otherwise I've been using Black Powder Bombs, Stickbombs and Dynamites mostly for my explosives, and whatever I scavenge off the npcs.

I shuddered at the mention of ten rounds... just the cost alone.  My idea was only to really use them for cover destruction, and or grouped or clustered enemies.  Of course when I launched the intercept I had no idea I'd be facing  100+ adversaries on one map ( at least that is what it sounds like! ;P ).  So yep.  Mortar with my horrible economy is probably the wrong choice.  My RPGs were all lost/destroyed at Black Citadel, and the few times I have shot them I haven't hit anything.  My confidence in them as a useful tool is pretty low, but I know lots of others have great success with them, so it just must be lousy tactics on my part.

And I think you are right Arthanor.  The rookie mistake of trying to gain tech is probably hurting my game.  If I was at this point in the game, and still had only hammers (starting tools only) I'd probably be alright.  All the other stuff that I've discovered so far is kind of fluff.  The armors may be nice, but they don't make me invulnerable.  Well, I still have a lot to learn and a huge hole to try to dig out of.  We'll see how it goes.  I can't say I have a lot of faith in a successful outcome. ;)

3600 is still the cheapest, by far, for 90 HE, at least store-wise (naturally it changes once you manufacture your own explosives) :) Also I don't think it is possible to fire AND reload mortar in one turn no matter how fast you are - you're left with 6% TUs, and you need 15, no sir :) Nah with Mortars, you need mortar-based tactics to be able to get their full potential, that is, secure the LZ and slowly, meticulously pound the enemies with your artillery. Else - yeah as a support device, Ivan probably doesn't need more than a few rounds since he will be using the mortar sparingly, not as the main weapon.

Which one is it, I think it's the grav harness, or unarmored. One of them gives you bonus TUs and I thought you might be able to do it if you have a capped gal already. If not, that means you need 20 rounds to use 10, my fights outside don't last that long. Or maybe I was doing a "pick up, fire, drop, step" with an ammo runt doing "step, load, throw"? That's might be possible too.. But that's 2 gals for shooting every turn, which amounts to a gal firing every other turn.

It sort of works as an "opportunity shot" weapon, and I carry one one a sniper. She drops it charge on the floor on the turn she gets in position, then fires her heavy maching gun (which takes a turn getting in position any ways). If I find a good target, drop the HMG, pick up the mortar, give 'em hell!

I haven't had much success with the mortar though, for some reason. We all have our duds... I'm missing things and thinking "Well, that was 3600 for nothing!" and decided to go with dynamite instead as short range throwing under cyberdiscs is more reliable than long range bombing. Flamethrowers have been really great (but the heavy is much better for the added range). Armor is a must too.

The mortal is a support fire and kill weapon. Its not there to be spammed. That said my mortar lady has at least 4 of them on her and only that and a smake grenade. Its usefullness comes from the way it fires (ignoring obstacles) and high damage/area of effect. Use it to destroy hard to kill targets or to get you past an emergency (and boy are you gonna use all the shells in this mission I bet).  You are not going to hit GOs with it obviously.

Also Dioxine is right that under no circumstances you can load and shoot it at the same turn.

Uh.. Capt'n! The rum is sweeter over there! *points in a random direction that's not here* I say we go get some!

Those guys are scary.. the number of dynamite packs it takes to deal with them, and the number of 'em is crazy.. That's kind of a "max damage check" and in this case I don't know if even with all the loot in the Bonny you'd be able to kill 'em all. Also be wary of melee reaction "fire". I got a gal gutted by a church neophyte with a billhook for stepping up to him.. Nasty!

A tip on smoke: Smoke screens are good, but even better between you and the enemy than on top of you ;) That way you can take your time with most gals, send one in the smoke to scout and come back, then throw stuff or snipe through the smoke. Smoking is bad for your health!

Tossing explosives to no effect makes one think of acids instead.

M8, you have a large number of vials with anti armor properties, yet you keep throwing TNT that clearly doesnt scratch the lobsters, maybe try those :P

Regarding the should I stay should I go: Id give it all a final push. Try the vials and acids. After all you did have a number of casualties but took a large number of them out. If the vials work, you can take the remnants with melee eventually. There cant be that many left.

EDIT: IF you plan to go, take a corpse of each and search for some stunned ones and throw them aboard the bonny, I am sure you have a couple of Deep ones and Lobsters stunned.

The two acid vials that hit, did nothing that I could see.  All in all, this was a mission that only gave us losses as far as I can tell.

One hit a deep one, and the acid shells from the blunderbuss took three deep ones down. I was speaking about the lobsternmen, the logic says ->armor eats at acid. I wouldnt be surprised if they deep ones have acid resist though. That said, the lobstermen seem to definetly have explosive resistance.

I dont say one could take em out, but a couple maybe. Also you might try next time to hit armored enemies from behind. That chainsaw attack might have got him that way. Truth be told I am trying to make logical assumptions here, I havent researched the lobsters. But it would make sense that acids would take them.

Maybe we will learn after the ladies put their tools on them. Overall I think I wouldnt pull out. But I can understand the decision. All things considered you did well out there.

EDIT: If the dark ones I pulled a couple of days ago are any indication of these types of missions, their corpses might lead to some new R&D stuff. But that again is speculation on my part.

EDIT2: Something that worked for me till I got another type of armor: Might want to consider the dedicated snippers/hatch gals and the mortar lady, be dressed in smoke armor in a permanent fashion? I did this and it worked wonders, perhaps if the hatch gals were awake taking potshots with the cross bow and the mortar we might have fared a bit better.

Eh, remember the day when we first met the Lobstermen and thought the problem can be solved by liberal application of Sonic Pulsers and Gauss fire? And how it ended...

Also, really, people. The chainsaw is NOT a giga-drill-breaker, it works up to personal-armor level, and basically only from the back :) But against armor value up to 25-30 (Raiders, Academy), it DOES provide a guaranteed kill.

And yeah, I'm using Smoke armor for all my snipers as well - and basically only for them. For assault units, Metal armor is the order of the day - makes no difference against hi-powered weapons, but all the world of difference against small arms, small lasers and close misses with grenades...

And thats why I said from behind. Without research you dont know the armor value of those things (and I havent done either). So if you are going to attack it, "better take em from behind nay?" as an entry so fondly says.
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Now with Limericks!!!

I think it's almost always worth the extra two steps to take an enemy from behind (or at least the side) instead of the front. You get one less hit from the lost TUs, but your damage potential goes way up. They only time I wouldn't is when "training" on a panicked target.

I actually use hover armor on my snipers, and put smoke between myself and the enemy instead of on top of myself. That way smoke provides more cover (they have to look through all of it instead of only half if it is deployed on top of you) and you don't pass out. Also, get some beer or combat drugs to the snipers or anyone else who is likely to be in smoke without a helmet. It helps a lot.

Otherwise.. I don't know why, but to me sea monsters feel like they should be resistant to acid, just because they are covered in some slime already. I would think fire works well, and Dioxine already said smoke was good too. It's hard to tackle the unknown, but such a nice change from vanila where you know everything.

I find little insentive to use the hovers I have unlocked thus far and I dont know if there is a better variant. I upgraded to heavy tacs at one point and now I have Power armor for everyone, however restricting that may be. Though I want to experiment a bit with mess for the snipers. Anyhow.

The problem with using smoke in between so to speak is that you block yourself as well and must rely on scouts to peep (taking reaction fire in the process sometimes). By throwing the smoke on yourself you simply block the LoS of the enemy. Well its up to the players preference I believe.

I like hover armour since it allows your support soldiers to move up behind the front lines and keep good lines of fire compared to staying on top of the Bonny where once you move out enough obstacles start to matter. I use personal hover armor from the XAE extensively when I play vanilla. But I haven't unlocked nearly as many armours as you have. I just researched powered armour parts but it's not much use since I only have one part now, so I am working on other stuff.

Smoke gameplay does vary a lot. I don't like sitting in smoke like Ivan does,  I use it more as a screen to charge through.  Only a few of my support soldiers actually stay in smoke. The snipers are too far behind and the scouts or breachers rush through to where the fight is too tight for smoke to matter. I like the tac armour the best for that since it doesn't reduce reactions.

I think hover armours work best with heavy weapons. Like Arthanor said, they allow better firing positions, and they also allow you to use heavier items (like the HMG).

That might be a case I havent considered. Usually my mortar chick has enough strength to wield the damn thing and just boosts it from random kills staying safely beyond the hatch. The heavy weapons I did deploy were deployed on loader armor because I need the mobility and ability to carry other things.

Plus the 40k fan in me gets a warm feeling when I see my chicks in massive suits mowing down aliens and heretics (ahem!) alike with an Iconic set of terminator weapons.

Well, you get hover armours much earlier than you get loaders (or at least I did.. I now have 3 choices of hover, but no loader..).

For the mortar, it doesn't matter as much since you have arcing fire to fire above hills/walls/buildings. You only get in trouble if the target is in the "shadow" of something.

But for something like a heavy machine gun which needs direct fire (and works quite well against medium enemies or to soften up things like cyberdiscs, and is less expensive to supply), the ability to move and still retain some height advantage is very nice. Usually I move my gals, use the HMG if needed, and if at the end of the turn I did not need it, then I move it to somewhere that should have good firing lanes next turn.

You mean to carry it? Both the grav harness and hover armour give you a negative weight, which should allow a gal to carry an HMG. Grav harness and *removed spoilers* some other armours give you extra TUs too which help a bit with mobility (but grav harness has negative armor, so I wouldn't recommend it).

Firing a HMG will always take pretty much your whole turn, it's something like 90% of TUs. But the 10% left is enough to move just enough to clear a corner if you were hiding behind a building or something. You either shoot an enemy this turn, or have to think a turn ahead and get in position to fire where you expect to see enemies next turn. It's a fun thing to do.

Side note: Those weapons you don't take many of, but have a large, expensive ammo are a bit tricky to supply. Firing the HMG once per battle will lose you all the ammo at the end of the battle. If you had two HMG, you could fire both once or twice and still only lose one ammo belt because of the way OpenXCom counts bullets, realizes you spent less than one's worth, so only removes one from your stash. This means many weapons with large ammo capacities are best used a lot and/or by many soldiers, or not at all.

I've never had a battle where I had to reload an HMG, so having this size of clip is a waste. Would it be possible for the gals to figure out that taking a smaller ammo belt is better for them (lighter, and they won't run out any ways) and better logistically as well?

Yeah I was actually considering this for the Boarding Gun but with HMG it works as well. Naturally, while lighter, smaller clips would also be less weight-effective (say, 10 weight for 60 bullets, but only 20 bullets for 5 weight or something like that).

Just realized we're filling up Ivan's thread! I thought this was in the Piratez thread! (Sorry Ivan!)

@Dioxine: I think that'd work. You probably won't miss the fewer bullets, but 5 weight more means you can take some dynamite or a dagger, which you'll probably be happy about. And it helps with the wasted ammo issue (which we're discussing in the OXCE thread).

IDK what the hell I did but I got these pretty darn early. And powered armor all things considered. Though building them was another matter entirely. I have a tendency not to rely on heavy weapons up till the point my soldiers/guns have decent stats.

Regarding the clip size: Well I would dare to say its about what the hell you are facing: In the mid game there are some nasties that lets just say that a weapon that fires with 20 bursts on a 100 clip ammo, just might require reloads.

Lol!  I don't mind. :)  Its good discussions!

Thanks for that and sorry, as always I get carried away.

Grav harness and hover armour you get pretty early, yeah. The other one took me a while (and as far as I can tell, you don't have it yet since you asked about it :P) Hover armour makes it doable to follow the gals up with a HMG, the other armour makes it not only doable, but actually a good idea.

No, I've seen those and know what to call them ;) It was my "no-pogrom" game: It didn't have pogroms because of a nightly/mod thing..

In that game, I saw people in what looked like
Magnetic Ion Armour that can fly above ground, equipped with gauss weapons[/spoilers].

Those guys were nasty and I never managed to stun one (only managed to kill a few, but not even recover anything :().

After Dioxine fixed things, I aborted that game and transferred the gals back in time in a new game through save tampering.

I don't think so... We saw one trader boss in Ivan's base defense with the TftD armor, but the rest was easy to recognize as traders.

What I saw was a full team in magnetic ion armor, with a tank similar to the humanists (vanilla UFO looking tank). As far as I know, that doesn't fit either of them

If Ivan is not reading spoilers, he'll be going crazy with the half conversations ;) And if he does, maybe he'll go crazy with fear after the sea monster encounter ;)

Sounds like a really bugged-out version. Magnetic-Ion armor doesn't exits in Piratez, except for certain violet-caped guys... but they never exist in multiples. And if they did, it was a bug.

No, in that game I didn't make it very far.. I was only a few months in, realized I had no pogroms, so restarted with a new version of the mod. So I have absolutely no idea who it was. I managed to kill some, but it just says "Dead" on the corpses, and never managed to stun one since I did not have powerful enough stun weapons (or strong enough gals with fistycuffs to punch them into submission).

If I ever encounter them again, I'll let you know :P Haven't seen anything like them in my new game yet. Oh well.. Another mystery in the world of Piratez!

Hi Ivan!

Don't worry about black April, let's look forward to May's bounty! I can say that I'm happy Max is by your side again :D I think you're also learing a valuable Piratez lesson: You're not a soldier defending Earth, you're a pirate. You prey on the weak and get loot/ransom/booty, no point in dying against the tough guys. You know what those -7000$ are? Less than a fifth of a lowly GO's ransom. That's nothing. It's really nothing compared to what a bottle of rum's worth!

If I may suggest something for Max, it'd be to keep her unarmored or better yet give her smokey armor, and give her a hunting rifle or BlackMarch SMG. Invest in your ranged soldiers so they get better. She doesn't have great reactions, or great melee, so she's better off the frontlines covering the other girls.

Hunting rifles and blackmarch SMGs are not great weapons but they will keep your non melee gals safer at a distance, pinging away at the enemy. You don't need 18 gals running at the enemy with axes.

Having gals hitting stuff means they increase in firing accuracy and strength, so they'll be able to carry better weapons and hit more stuff, harder! Get a few hits in a few battles and you'll start seeing the improvements. The better the accuracy, the more hits, the more hits, the more improvements, etc. And the more hits, the more we kill 'em!

Then comes the scoped rifle, sniper rifle, plastasteel ammo and finally the heavy cannon. All within your reach next month, stuff that can put the hurt even on armoured guys.

Those pogroms and deep ones mean nothing. We learned, we survived, we can get 'em! Let's not forget who stood up to traders trying to invade the hideout! That's something to be proud of! We can do it and we can make them hurt! We just have to pick who to get back to first. I suggest traders ;) Let's see what the RNG throws at you!

Have a shot, capt'n! Then we fly the Bonny into the Kraken's jaw and from there, carve out our fortune for eternity!

hehe! I watched that episode this morning :P You sneak 'em up on youtube first, eh?

Progress looks good, heavy cannons especially will be great to have (and the runts can make the ammo eventually!).

Only thing to say: Radar coverage capt'n! If we can't see 'em, we can't crash 'em!

New hideouts are really expensive ($1M+) but building a hangar is ~200k, and you can build a spy zeppeling for relatively cheap too. Then all you have to do is check the graph to see where the activity is and sent the zeppelin to anchor there (It has a great radar range too, as bit as your base).

Trying to catch UFOs from the graphs is hard, because you usually notice that the curve has gone up only until after it has, which means the UFO left already. What it is best for is identifying the region you need to keep an eye on, which is really easy to do with the zeppelin.

And yeah.   :-\  Horrendous day.  Made me way late putting up the episode here.  I had medical stuff in the morning and work melted down without me, so my afternoon was ridiculous.  Two straight hours on the phone to India with a microsoft technician. :P  Bleh.

Oh my.. and I thought I had a bad day... I got to deal with indian HP once and that wasn't fun. I bet indian microsoft is even worse.

Solvability is indeed an issue.. So we need some money! A bottle of rum is $13999 profit in 420 runt-hours.. $33.33/hour profit for a runt. That's ~$24k/month per runt.. A run costs $10k to hire, 5k maintenance, so that's a profit of 9k/month on the first month, 19k/month after. A workshop is 800k, 30 runts: First month they'll pay back 270k, then 570k.. yeah..

It takes a month to build a workshop, 2 months for the runts to pay back the building cost, 3 months overall before they actually make a profit. Looks to me like we only have one possible solution, capt'n! We gotta get some loot!

Gotta get looting to get the money, gotta get the money to do anything, gotta do something to get the points, gotta get the points to keep looting, gotta get looting to... No, I already said that! ;) Well, we know where to start! Good thing we all like looting! :D

Think selling off the nuclear fuel is worth it to start a hangar?  Its probably a couple months before we have it up, and a zepp.. and from the sounds of it 3 or more months before I have a chance at that second rum factory I'm dreaming of.

Until then, I guess, I just pray to RNGesus that some fat ship rolls past my base, because patrol the charts is ineffective?  Also.  High chance of getting hammered at a Pogrom and ending the campaign at this point if no shipping shows up.  Or more likely it loiters overhead for weeks but the radar misses it. ;)

Cheers, Ivan :D
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Now with Limericks!!!
Post by: Dioxine on May 28, 2015, 10:47:22 am
Well, selling half of your fuel and plastasteel would set you up at about +700k, more than enough to make a hangar and a Zeppelin... OR a workshop to double your manufacturing profit... but if you gonna do it, gotta do it sooner than later. Both of these projects take a full month to complete, though. Interrogate anyone you can if hard-pressed for score - the stuff you get from interrogations is rarely immediately useful, but grants good points (especially if it's a new enemy that hasn't been interrogated before).

Still, there is another solution :) Gotta finally win a Pogrom, man. It's sort of a rite of passage. With new, better explosives you can actually take on an average Pogrom... Dynamite often takes out a power-armored dude in a single hit, and it's a guaranteed kill against personal armor. Otoh there is 1 chance in 2 of meeting tanks or cyberdiscs, and those eat explosives like candy. Fire is about the only way of killing them available to you now - but it takes a LOT of fire.

Oh and don't even bother with Tac armors on Pogroms. Leather and Metal give much better chances of survival. Tac armor (and Warrior) is, on the other hand, much better for raiding small ships, where the crews are poorly armed.

On the other hand, if you avoid losing, avoiding Pogroms makes for an interesting game - you are cut off from certain tech, and might advance in an totally unexpected direction... but then you absolutely need a patrol craft to be able to survive on shipping alone - most of it isn't very brutal on the ground as you have seen in the first months. Anyway, best of luck!

Thanks very much for the tips!!  After the deepone village, I thought dynamite was probably only little better than HE grenades or something.   Are all those things really that tough, or did I just have bad luck with the little variations in elevation on the sandy hills, etc.?

Kinda both, as far as I remember the deep ones have resistance to explossive to boot.

Post by: Arthanor on May 28, 2015, 04:03:25 pm
Dynamite is really worth it, but always carry a few HE packs too. At 8k, they're expensive, but you need the extra damage to punch through cyberdiscs and tanks. My counter to power armor dudes is a hammer blow in the back. Works well enough..

Back to moneys:
Workshops are a long term safe investment: You take 3 months to pay it off, but then you get $570k every month. It works well if you then reinvest that into more workshop and create exponential income. But right now, it doesn't really look like we have the "seed money" to start on a rum venture. Would be a good thing to do when/if we get some good money from looting though! Cover the cost of 'em brainers..

I think I'd sell some slave AIs first, then maybe a ship engine or two (always keep.. ~3-4 of 'em for the next crafts you might build). Chances are that besides a zeppelin, we won't be building much soon. We should find more AIs and engines while looting!

If that's still not enough to get us a hangar, then selling some nuclear fuel or plastasteel is doable too. Just make sure we have enough to fly the Bonny for a while (at least 100?) so we can catch the shipping! Once the hangar is built, we can figure out where to get the cash for the zeppelin (which is pretty cheap if I remember well). If we're lucky, we'll have caught some shipping in the meantime and already have the money.

It's better to sell a few things for the hangar, and then sell other stuff later if we need to (but hope we catch something), than to sell enough for the hangar and zeppelin both now, only to get some loot from a chance UFO but run out of nuclear fuel and have to buy some back.

In the meantime, it might be worth it to just keep the Bonny at anchor over swtizerland or something. Pretty central to europe so whoever is flying there should ping on the radar. Trying to catch something after you've noticed the graph is hard because it's probably already done and gone.

The best use of the graph for me is finding where I need to setup patrols, then keeping a craft there to catch the next thing. You can't do it for a day or so either, since there is usually a gap between UFOs. Patrolling immediately after one means you're probably in that gap and you likely won't see anything. You have to patrol for a long time. Ideally in a central location without moving. Being at anchor costs less fuel than zipping around, so changing waypoints all the time is not a good idea unless you are hoping to catch a UFO that went off-radar. Zeppelins don't use fuel when at anchor, which makes them awesome for long term patrols (and they have great radars too!).
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Now with Limericks!!!
Post by: Dioxine on May 28, 2015, 05:05:27 pm
Bonaventura isn't the best patrol craft available, with its small radar range. Keeping a 100 fuel might be overdoing it, unless you indeed plan to patrol - a typical mission run costs you about 1-5 units of fuel, while a full patrol (3-4 days afair) would burn 20 or more, which is 220k+ in hard cash (in selling price) just to see the sights. And yeah, a craft burns fuel only half as fast while patrolling (rounding down).

Yeah, it depends what you catch in those 3-4 days... Some UFOs can be worth 2 millions, but it depends on what it is and what's inside.. Ivan is worried about the points (have to gain some to not get a negative again) though, and cleaning up UFOs, even at a loss cash wise, might be worth it.

The ship is worth over $2 million in loot. After such a great start, I'd push to the end it even at the cost of half the crew. Well if you don't you're screwed anyway, looks like they're building a base (probably), and you're going to lose over 500 points on that alone (long landing times during construction). :)

Also. Firing a Panzerfaust from the inside of the craft. This is the best way to start a day, ever :)

Storming large ships is hard, but a melee-heavy crew gives you an advantage - especially if the ship has many hiding places. Plus you got the gauss weapons now - there are almost no enemies who can survive more than a single hit.

Well the next episode should be interesting at any rate. Here's to hoping you get a good landing site. I'd say good luck, but I imagine you already have it recorded.

Also I see I've ended up with a Gal. Wonder how long she'll last. That low stamina should increase fairly quickly provided she sees some action, the trick'll be finding something she can do without moving much. A firing accuracy of 50 isn't ideal for a sniper but maybe some sort of grenadier with frags, ect. Also I'm unsure of your decision to give her no armour at all, her strength is reasonable, you could at least give her the usual pirate duds for the small stat boosts, have you researched the tac armour based flying suit yet? I can't remember if you have,
but that actually increases stamina.

Of course this may be a moot point if she died on your pogrom.

Nope, no flying armor yet. :)  Nice to know there is something out there that actually gives back!  All this other junk just feels like terrible trade offs.

Eh, its not too deep in the tech tree, and I had a somewhat more successful start than you did, coupled with the fact that I didn't capture a vital dude for a while game me more time to research side topics. On the other hand the enemies have like 6 bases up, so I'm like completely haemorrhaging points each month. I should really clear some out, but they were all academician, and the voodoo+gauss really freaked me out.

Research Spoilers Below
The most basic and first thing you can research is the GRAV HARNESS
This actually lowers your defence to 15 all round, 150% incend & 70% cutting, in return it gives +10 TUs and +15 Stamina

The next (and immidately after) is HOVER
it has 5 more armor on all sides than a TAC VEST and is a variant of that line of armour. However it loses the 10% resits against Piercing & Laser and gains a 10% weakness to acid.
It gives -15TUs, +15 Carring capacity and +5 Stamina. I consider this to be a fair trade off, as the people I give it to are rarely in danger, as I operate an archangel sniper like setup with 1 or 2 gals.

I dont actually consider the loss of stats to armor to be that bad, but I suppose any loss of TUs & Stamina is problematic with your fixed tu usage melee troops.

EDIT: Also you may wish to look into the Motion Scanner. I haven't actually used it in Piratez yet, but I've had some success in vanilla xcom using it to predict when it's safe to go up elevators in ufo defence, especially on the supply ship map.
It's called the Eye-Phone in Piratez, and I believe the tech comes from a low level academician.

My first one was an academician too on the 2nd-3rd month as well. Since then I pray to find another one but it seems the 4 years that passed dropped them on the back seat. Damn bastards are one of the most important factions if you plan to make serious progress.

Title: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Vote Time!!
Post by: ivandogovich on June 15, 2015, 03:15:11 am
Decision time:

I have recorded up to episode 42.  I have not yet switched over to PirateZ Extended, which just came out with not a lot of fanfare today, I guess.  I have a little less than 3 weeks left to create content for this Lets Play.  When I started the LP, I was under the impression that Meridian might pick it up where I had to stop, but I don't think that is going to happen now.  He still has a lot of FMP to cover, and I think he feels like the lackluster play so far in the series has doomed it. I think if/when he does take on PirateZ he will do so on his own terms, probably with Extended, and of course rock this game in his normal masterful style.

So at this time, I'm wondering if I should keep the orphan alive for a few more weeks, and if so, should I try to upgrade to Extended, and suffer through many more hilarious/heartbreaking fails as I try to learn all of the new changes in the game.   If there is enough interest I can probably squeeze out another 10 episodes or so.  Over all, I'd say that the campaign is still very much in the early game, and that it features very mediocre tactics and strategy at best. :)  (I'd guess that a complete campaign of PirateZ would involve 250-300 episodes at the pace that I play).

Please vote:
1. String it out?
2. Lets see even more fails with Extended!
3. Let it go!!

Cheers, Ivan :D

I'm done with school at that point, and my PC/recording time is coming to an end.  So I won't be doing any more YT vids or LPs etc. This was just a "while I'm in school" hobby.

Aw, crap, sorry to hear that.

In that case I say you definitely need to continue this as long as you are still in school, so I suppose... um...

Maybe you can install extended just to attempt to resurrect the flair that this LP had, failing hard at new things instead of failing hard at old things? That would be what I would do.

Hey Ivan!

Don't sell yourself short man! Although masterful play is not your signature trait for LP, you are the most entertaining I have seen (even without the "Ivan moments" which I really like too!). I've tried a few others, but they never managed to grab me like you have and, except for you, it's always felt like I'd rather play the game than watch it be played. That swearing spaniard dude you mentioned looked interesting, but I don't speak spanish :/

With that said, I would suggest you keep things going as they are rigth now. No offense to Dioxine, but after such a bold (and awesome) move, it's not unlikely that there might be some issues to iron out. And a lot did change intentionally. That's not something you really want to tackle in ~10 episodes. It's just not enough time (plus the wasted time to set it up, which could be 1-2 more episodes for us!).

Let's see where this is going, and if you can set the gals into a more promising situation with the 10 episodes that we still have. I, for one, am looking forward to every one of them. With the looting of that supply ship and the pogrom that's going rather well, I'd say it's looking up right now!

I wish I could offer to pick up your LP if Meridian won't, but I have never done it and it would probably be a disgrace :P

This is not a real question:

1) You know we love your LP and we dont see it in order to learn how to play but in order to have fun, I probably suck more bro.
2) Weather you win or lose it doesnt matter, see 1.
3) Upgrading to extended mid LP/Campaign will cause more problems and ultimetly will confuse new watchers more.
4) Last but not least, If this your last YT series, then under no circumstances should it be left unfinished.  And if you cant finish it due to time restraints at least drag it as long as you can.

So I vote keep going.

EDIT: We lost Jstanks play, at least keep this up as long as you can.

Real shame to see you go. I typically don't watch let's plays for games I play myself (I typically get bored after 3-6 episodes) but I've enjoyed yours, starting from your 'Rocking the Oldies' TFTD.

I'll mirror what the others are saying above. If you're rapping up LPing, continue with what you're doing atm. If you were continuing I'd say by all means wrap this up and start series 2 pirates on extended. but ~10 episodes isn't really time for a new lp to get off the ground. In early game pirates that's probably about 6 missions (maybe even less), and that's nothing.

Well I'll be honest here, I don't understand the problem. Either you want to do it or not; if you don't, that's fine, but if you do, why does it matter if you're still in school or not? Unless you plan to enter a monastery or something. :)

I'm not saying you must continue recording no matter what. I love your LPs, but as you said it's a hobby and a matter of choice. I only want to say that you should base this decision on this, and not on excuses like "I'm finishing school and I'll be too busy to do it". Because it can't be true for anyone.

Having said that, I'm actually in favour of switching to Extended. The changes aren't fundamental, so I don't think there'll be confusion over it, and I think an LP should reflect the game as it is, and the Extended version is the only Piratez version left. Besides, I want to see all the new stuff. :)
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Now with Limericks!!!

The "problem" is called real life... I won't go into any details, Ivan can explain if he wants to.

My vote goes to: 2. Lets see even more fails with Extended!
(but please check with Dioxine if the save won't fall apart)

As for picking up on the series, I promised I will do it, and I am definitely not going to break my word.
In all honesty, I would prefer starting a new game (a spiritual successor if you will), but continuing the campaign is also a good option... as I said in the comments Ivan, let the viewers decide what they want.

As for the timing, I could probably start playing/recording around July 11th... so if you can produce cca 10 more episodes, it could go pretty fluently.
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Now with Limericks!!!

Unless you plan to enter a monastery or something. :)

Probably worse - like getting married :)

Normally, I wouldn't reccomend switching to Extended mid-campaign. Ivan's game is by no means doomed, and it'd be kinda shame for 40-50 episodes to go to waste, but with improvements that I've been releasing during his LP, I kept everything as little invasive as possible. This is no longer true with Extended. Even the starting base layout has changed with a new building added. Many researches have changed. I made sure the game is still possible to pick up, but it'll be like a hurricane - lots of STR_something 0-point researches popped up, things working for some time then stopping because you no longer have the prerequistes or something (like Rum production - you no longer have neither resources or required building). Otoh, this is possible to handle with a few hours of test-playing and fixing before returning to the game. AND your moneymaking capabilities would go to waste instantly, with no Still nor the technology to build one - the tech can be researched pretty fast, but it still costs $900k to build! Of course you can just make a Still to spontaneously appear at your base... :)

Also there is a strong possibility of bugs, so maybe waiting for first bugreports and fixes would be prudent...

Honestly, I don't know - continuing would be the best, but I feel I need to give a fair warning about the impeding perils.

I reckon it takes about 20-60 hours to get to mid-game, depending on your skill, luck and difficulty level. Finishing the game can possibly be done in like 80 hours of normal play, possibly less, but likely more. Twice as much if you want to get all the secrets. These are just rough estimates though. In game-time, I think it is impossible to finish the campaign within 1 year, and very likely to be able to do so in in 3 years.

I have 17.5 hours in the series right now, and I'd guess I'm not close to the mid game.  Still feels like the beginning tbh.  Doing a YT series is a lot slower, to comparatively the average player might need only 5-10 hours to get where I am.

3 years was what it took me because I slagged it a bit in order to get most things, but even then  RNG Decided against it.

For a power player and with prior knowledge id put it around the 2.5 mark. If you want everything 4 years it is.

I want to thank everyone for their feedback!!

As much as I wish there were an option Four, unfortunately my circumstances are such that there isn't.  Its just a quirk of my real life situation.

The results:

6 votes for staying with .9j, and 3 votes with switching to Extended.  So I'll be staying here in .9j and trying to produce enough vids to maybe get us into the 50's in terms of episodes.

I'm not going to ask Meridian to take up the campaign.  He should start an Extended campaign of his own, whenever he decides that he wants to take on PirateZ.  He will do so with the same panache and thoroughness that he does everything, and I can't wait to see it. :)

I can leave all my resources though, if someone would like them, when I have to wrap it up (saves, music, etc).

Nice clean up Ivan! Too bad you didn't get one of the red headed dudes! That felt like a HUGE map!

Great use of the "stop, drop and roll" response for being on fire ;) I wasn't sure that'd work, but I guess bashing a gal with knuckles or a handle is a good way to deal with fire?! Especially if you have a shot of rum ready for when they pass out.

A few hints that might help:
- drones (the one tile cyberdiscs) are very vulnerable to fire but resistant to everything else. One molotov/WP/flamethrower hit will take them out. Come to think of it, that makes sense since cyberdiscs are also rather vulnerable to flames.
- Rifles are two handed. If your gals didn't hold on to a bottle of rum or a grenade, they'd shoot better! :P

And.. you WILL storm their base before the end, right? ;)

Who would've thunk that boardin' and pillaging be a safe business capt'n? As long as the loot keeps coming, the rum keeps flowing and the clone machines keep going, we'll be a happy bunch!

Long live the Capt'n!

(hum... why is he never needing the clone machine, uh?)

Capt'n to the front! Capt'n to the front!
You need your own Gal, Ivan!

As a matter of personal preference, I don't like the idea of cloning machines. Each gal is different and deserves her own story. For me, it cheapens the sacrifice, the immersion, and the simulationist aspect of the game.

On the other hand, XCOM has a really heavy emotional whack in the heart for me, so whatever floats your boat.

Well, I'm only saying that because Ivan renames the new hires with our gals' names once he goes through the list. I would tend to agree that just reviving gals is akin to cheating.

But.. I think having an... "Ivanetta" Capt'n gal might be interesting ;)

Nooooo!!!

I just finished watching the last episode. I will miss your LPs Ivan! I don't think I've watched all of the TftD one, so at least there's that still to go. But watching something new and having the opportunity to interract and have a soldier, even though none of mine ever did much, was awesome.

Also.. You should watch back your first few pogroms. How tense you were and how crazy it seemed. Now you're chatting all the while and gals seem to just casually dismiss enemies who can't even see you. The difference is impressive. Too bad you can't continue..

Something you didn't mention in the recording: You aren't going to do LPs anymore, but will you still game and be on the forum? Losing you as an LP'er is a shame (you're my favorite, in fact the only one I've ever watched for more than one episode), but losing you as a member of the community would be really unfortunate.

Thanks, Arthanor!

I won't really be able to play at this point, but I still will be active here and in the community.  I'd like to help out where I can.  I don't have a good set of graphics tools to use at the moment, so new medals for commendations and things, I can't really do right now.  I have considered jumping in on the XPirateZ Tech Tree project.... we'll see. ;)

I'll be watching awesome LPs like Meridian's and Nooks. :)   I can't wait to see the next PirateZ LP whenever it kicks off sometime.  I'm sure Meridian would just crush it!

You sadist. To be honest I often felt sorry for Ivan during this LP, thank God he was reasonable and didn't go for the highest difficulty. Then again it was very educational to see how an experienced, but ordinary player (as opposed to a superhuman ;) ) would handle my mod :)

Is the Scoreboard mod anywhere?

I think you are asking about a merge of Soldier Diaries that was used for part of this series.  I'm pretty sure there are some posts in the main PirateZ thread.  It would only be viable for the old version of PirateZ (0.9j) that I was playing here however, so I don't think it would work with XPirateZ and it may rely on older nightlies that may be hard to come by.
Title: Re: Let's Play PirateZ! (0.9j) Finished:Incomplete (52 episodes)
Post by: Arthanor on October 16, 2015, 07:30:03 pm
XPiratez relies on OpenXCom Extended, and Soldier's Diaries depends on it's own executable, so it would be hard to mix the two. There was a merge done by.. fudge dragon, which was posted in the Soldier's Diaries thread, so that might work, but I'm not sure how up to date it is anymore with Extended and if any newer features would be missed. It is certainly not a maintained executable either..
