Title: [SOLVED] Difference between "ufo: enemy unknown" and "xcom: ufo defence"
Post by: niculinux on March 24, 2015, 09:28:05 pm
Hello.

As far as i know xcom: ufo defence i the US version of ufo: enemy unknown; the latter commercialized in Europe and the rest of the wordl. Now what is the difference? If any, which one includes the universal patch in the extsta download section of openxcom official homesite (https://openxcom.org/downloads-extras/)?

Thank you, in advance

You need to apply the patch on both Versions, so it doesn't matter. Steam Version also.

As far i I've seen it's just the name, and yes I have BOTH versions (one on the original floppies even - if I can remember where I packed it.)

None. The reason for the different names is that Microprose US vetoed the "UFO: Enemy Unknown" name since they were worried that using UFO as the game title might lead to copyright issues. So they decided to change the name into XCom: UFO Defense for the US edition.

One has to say, having something unique in the game name was a rather good move of the US people. It establishes the brand much better. Everybody switched to "XCom: Terror from the Deep" later.

"USO: Terror from the Deep" would be a rather weird name, and the link to the first instalment a bit more tenuous.

In closing, the universal patch is a cumulative one, includin also some fixes from the game community, in fact according to its readme:

Code: [Select]

This patch covers all current fixes to the original X-COM data, including:
- UFO 1.4 official patch (+ previous versions);
- Combo X-COM Game Folder Patch (by Zombie/Bomb Bloke);
- Various extra fixes by the OpenXcom community.

To install, extract to your OpenXcom Data folder, overwriting every file.

If you need to patch original X-COM instead, you should check here: https://www.strategycore.co.uk/files/ufo-enemy-unknown/patches/
