Am I missing sumthing or is it just random placing of the aliens/terror units @ the start of a mission but how on earth did this Sectopod get into this room as there are no 2x2 doors?

the map maker messed up.
Always blame the map maker! Poor us... that Sectopod clearly squeezed through those doors :'(
-
They assembled it in the ship, without realizing it wouldn't fit through doors.

It's a trap! Aliens were definitely smart enough to surprise the agents when they were starting to think it's quite safe. Surprise! HAHA!!
... Or maybe they were just dumb and forgot there were more sectopods they could use in the battlefield and left it there...
-
Clearly some kind of sick alien practical joke.
The Navigator pages the Leader while the Engineer and a few soldiers assembled the Sectopod.
-
I guess the alien commander wanted the best bodyguard available with him at all times. So like Yrizoud said, they really had to assemble a dedicated Sectopod on the bridge...

Reminds me of the vanilla behavior, to stuff Cyberdiscs on level 2 of terror ships, but not in the compartments to the side, but in the middle part. Or the small room in level 2 of the battleship, right next to the door, that leads to the small elevator to level 3, where there were Sectopods and Reapers put in. As a novice, one was wondering, where on earth that last unit was, until discovering it in there...

I think Sectopod takes 2x2 only because it wants to appear bigger and more intimidating. If you look at the graphics closely it should be possible to fit it on 2x1 (by moving it 0,5 tile backwards) and move through the door sideway.
