Title: OpenTFTD Question
Post by: CaptainMagicono on November 17, 2014, 06:11:14 am
Hey, this might not be the right place to ask this, but is there any part of this forum that is being devoted to covering OpenTFTD development? I have tried to play Xcomutiled TFTD, but I have been far too spoiled by the comforts and conveniences of OpenXcom to not cring every time I need to move an aquanaut at the speed of frozen tar.

Thanks.

not really, TFTD development is just sort of... happening. i'm rubbish at documenting my endeavours.

Alright, I just thought I was doing something wrong  when looking for any information :P. For the time being though, I don't think I will be able to play vanilla TFTD. I really find it difficult to think others have gotten used to the old DOS restricted UI, so many clicks.... Glad you all have made OpenXcom though, I would probably not have been able to enjoy the original so thoroughly otherwise, thanks.

Man I know that feeling Captain, I decided I would try to boot up TFTD to play along with SupSuper's TFTD charity stream. Nope, just nope.
Not having all those QoL UI improvements like rightclicking equipment amounts and reordering aquanauts just plain hurts.
And don't even get me started on the God-awful mouse-lag that keeps making me misclick.

Everytime I fire up the old ones through DosBox I'm reminded at just how amazing OpenXcom really is.
OpenTFTD really can't come soon enough, I've been hyped since summer when the first teaser pictures dropped.
Hats off to the entire team for their hard work on the project.  :)

I even made a "dark abyss" avatar, to subtly show interest and support in TFTD.

I will be extremely happy when OpenTFTD comes out :-) Was definitely my favorite of the two.

I'm also planning to play TFTD after the openTFTD 1.0 comes out (I haven't played the vanilla one yet). I'll play the vanilla one first, feel frustrated by some faulty things, play the openTFTD, and become happy :) That's exactly what I did with this XCOM. I somehow got the chance to play openXCOM and I have to say this was one of my luckiest events ever. Just huge thanks to the developer team.

So only expect a TFTD portion to the forum to it when it comes out, right?

I doubt that. TFTD is another X-Com game, and it will be integrated in the project an engine level. While there will be some specific TTFD stuff in the engine, it will be kinda minor.

Time will tell :)

yeah, we're taking the approach that TFTD is essentially a total conversion type mod.

Or an alternative IWAD  :D

I'd love to test OpenTFTD and report bugs, but I can't find any instructions on how to get it set up. Do I just do exactly the same thing as with UFO - compile the code, copy across the data from a TFTD from GamersGate, and start the game?

You cannot test OpenTFTD yet, you don't have the ruleset... which is currently sitting only on the computer of the developer(s). I am sure they will let us know once OpenTFTD is ready for beta testing.

i COULD commit it, but it's not finished, and as soon as i DO, people will start modding it, and i want to stave that off as long as possible, at least until the battlescape is sorted out.

I fully understand and support your decision... don't succumb to pressure from our side! ;-)

Well, it's your gig... but if you commit it, people might also help you finish it :-) Otherwise, do do a news post when it's ready for testing.

There will be no more "rare Triscene" or "rare Xarquid"

OpenTFTD will make vanilla tftd feels as easy as ufo:eu.

Isn't it a nightmare?

Sometimes (at weekends mostly) I'm casting test runs in the twitch (https://twitch.tv/volutar_).
Without voice commenting tho.

That's awesome, I'd love to see someone streaming TFTD!
Gave you a follow on Twitch. :)

Total mayhem. I must say AI is far better than original, @Warboy ;)

I'd say it looks fairly playable, as far as Battlescape goes.

Oh my god, how can one even possibly defend against that without making sure all your troops are immune to MC?

Well, high ranking Tasoths = M.C. attacks. Keep a lightning rod or three on the team (soldier with Low M.C. strength who has been targeted on previous missions by M.C. attacks), and unarmed so they can't hurt themselves or others. Let them soak up the M.C. activity.
We have good armor here, so use scout and snipe tactics. The Tasoths will respond well to sonic weapons, or sonic disruptors (alien grenades). Apply liberally. Tricenes should also be vulnerable to explosives so that may help there too. Other than that, if you don't have a squad that can handle this level of a terror mission, just touch and go. Land, wait one turn (let the enemy burn his TUs), pop the door open, shoot anything in sight (ok, leave the civs alone, just shoot the extra-terrestrials (extra-aquestrials??)) and then abort. You will lose points, but far less than you would have if you ignored the terror mission.

I believe that the proper term for the aliens that originated on Earth itself is Ultra-Terrestrials.

Pretty sure you've got the right approach. It needs to be at least partially playable before it's worth doing any TFTD-related nightlies.

Yes, but wouldn't it be a great "christmas present" to be able to play some TFTD battlescape missions in OpenXcom? Killing some lobstermen for christmas eve?  :D

TFTD Battlescape seems to be pretty playable right now:

It looks very good, but apparently many, many things are to be done. I think that at this point, you couldn't even have UFO and TFTD installed in same system, since many things are still hardcoded for Ufo1 only, you would have to mess with config files every time you want to play this different game you did last time.
While you certainly could play if you managed to get your hands on the TFTD ruleset, it would be very jury-rigged.

I see, thank you. And yes, I also think that TFTD will look great on higher resolutions [1]. The graphics/sprites are much more detailed and vivid than Ufo1 graphics.
