Title: [COMMENDATIONS] UFOPedia Mod 3.2 (Updated by hellrazor)
Post by: ivandogovich on October 25, 2014, 06:21:40 am
Edit by Meridian: latest version 3.2 is attached to this post: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,3048.msg133802.html#msg133802 or https://openxcom.mod.io/commendations

Edit: 7/16/2017  hellrazor graciously updated this mod for the latest nightly builds.  (Thanks!!)  I've added it the to this post as Commendations_v2.1.zip
To use the newest build, ignore any instructions below from earlier versions of this mod.  If you have a Nightly version newer than June 20, 2017 simply unzip Commendations_v2.1.zip into your Mods folder and enable from the Main Menu (Advanced>Mods).  There is no more need for Shoe's custom .exe because Soldier Diaries and Commendations code has been integrated into the nightlies.

Edit: 11/28/2015 With  Stat-Tracking now merged into the Nightlies, I have uploaded the Medal Template file (https://www.openxcom.com/mod/medal-template-commendations)that I used in creating the UFOPEDIA medal images.  Feel free to use it to create your own awesome medals!!! :)

Commendations UFOPedia Read Me:

What is this mod all about?

This mod is a supplement to the excellent mod by Shoes called Commendations.  Commendations relies on a custom executable for OpenXcom called Stats/Soldier Diaries (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=1718.0)  (<< this is a link. Click it.).  Together these mods from Shoes track a soldier's combat history and the Commendations mod, awards them medals based upon time in service, number and type of kills etc.

(https://i.imgur.com/O9PeChv.png)  (https://www.stencilease.com/gif/CC0081.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/ZlWqbmG.png)

This Commedations UFOPedia Mod aims to make this experience a little more immersive by adding a section in the UFOPedia that explains the different awards in greater detail with additional flair text.

What is included?

The first thing that is included is the "/Resources/Medals" folder.  In this folder are all of the back ground images for the UFOPedia entries.  These have custom artwork with enlarged ribbons and medallions for each commendation.

There is also a new ruleset: CommendationsUFOpedia.rul which sets up the UFOPedia sections and adds all the flavor text.

What changed in this mod?

There is only one change that this mod makes to the vanilla commendations mod.  Two of the commendation ribbons are switched to match the new UFOpedia images:

   Honor Cross  (/Commendations/medal_105.png )
   Weapon Proficiency   (/Commendations/medal_107.png)

   The images have been renamed and replaced in the /Commendations folder.

How do I use this?

Simply copy the /Resources/Medals and the /Resources/Commendations folder into your /Resources folder in your OpenXcom location.  Copy the rulesets into the corresponding /Rulesets location as well.  Enable the CommendationsUFOpedia mod in OpenXcom from the Options screen.

Once you are in OpenXcom from the Geoscape, open the Ufopaedia.  All Commendation entries are in the "Weapons and Equipment" section at the bottom of the list.   "Commendation Entries" Section.  Heavy Weapons Platforms have been moved to the previous category, in version 2.0 allowing for an entire section devoted to the Commendations.

I can see the Ufopedia Entries but there are no names or commendations for my soldiers! Help!  What do I do?

Set your language to English- US on the Video tab of the Options menu.  (Edit: Version 2.0 Now includes support for English - UK).

This mod needs Shoes' Stat Tracking/Soldier Diaries Mod.  https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=1718.0 (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=1718.0)
 It includes "Commendations."   My Commendations UfoPedia mod won't work with out them. :)  Please install Shoes' mod at this that link, then try Commendations Ufopedia again.

(https://i.imgur.com/DI0TgDM.png)

What is coming?

Shoes is planning on developing an additional UFOPedia section in his custom executable that will be specifically for commendations.    Version 2.0 now adds a "Commendation Entries" section to the UFOpedia and moves the HWPs to the first category.

Additionally, he may chose to merge this mod into his Commendations Mod.  At that point the CommendationsUFOpedia Mod will be obsolete and no longer needed.  I have made this a standalone mod for testing and distribution only, mostly as a way to give something back to this awesome project.

Can I modify this?

You are welcome to modify this in anyway.

Can I help?

The en-GB is a copy and paste in this mod  :-[ and could maybe use an overhaul.  It should be consistent with the vanilla Commendations mod ruleset en-GB, translation.
Any and all other translation efforts are completely welcome.

Thanks to Shoes for the awesome Commedations Mod!  Thanks also to those folks in the forums that provided feedback and input as I tackled this project.  Some of these fine individuals are Dioxine, Xracer, Arthanor, falko, Solarius Scorch, XOps, Moriarty, RandomCommander, and Vulgar Monkey.

Is there anything else here?

Yes there is!  I have created another mini-mod with three new commendations.  They are included in a separate ruleset with resources.
(https://i.imgur.com/HEA0n0F.png)(https://i.imgur.com/G1WcgBy.png)(https://i.imgur.com/BdsDp9M.png)

The ruleset is Commendations_added_ID.rul.  This ruleset adds 3 additional commendations for a bit of extra immersion.  These are Sapper, Melee, and Sectopod.  Because the Melee kill award relies on custom weapons (combat knife, etc) I have separated these from the main ruleset.  You are certainly free to use them, or modify them etc.

With the modsite back up, I've posted this mod there as well. : https://www.openxcom.com/mod/commendations-ufopedia-mod (https://www.openxcom.com/mod/commendations-ufopedia-mod)

I can't get this to work. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have activated the mod, placed the stuff where it is supposed to go... and well. I can see the medals in the ufopedia, some have the right name but some just look wrong. When I open the medals I have no texts. It says STR_MEDAL_ALIEN_BASE_ASSAULT and so on.

Please download and install Shoes' mod "Stat Tracking/Soldier Diaries" here.

I guess I should have clarified that I have actually downloaded and installed Shoes mod.
The mod works as it should. It's the extra fluff you made that don't work, no matter what I do :/

Do you have Shoes' Commendations turned on in the Options?

Edit:  Also it only works with US English:

Finally it works. Good mod!

Awesome!  I'm glad you could get it working!

I'd just clone the US English, but I kind of don't want to without help.  There are a number of changes in the UK English version of the mod - .i.e. commendation names, and the obvious British spelling differences.

Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion for the 24bit->paletted conversion doesn't look good, and doesn't fit conventional xcom gradient.
(https://www.ufopaedia.org/images/thumb/7/74/UP_BORD3SPK.png/800px-UP_BORD3SPK.png)
I recommend using ordered Bayer 4x4. And don't go beyond single colorgroup. Mixing different hues in single gradient looks not really nice. And with HQ filters it will become even worse.
(https://i.imgur.com/BdsDp9M.png)
And for medal itself - better not to use any error diffusion, not dithered, nor ordered.

These names are just ... algorithms named after inventors.
In the photoshop: To make those gradients look really good, you should use custom (xcom) palette, remove everything except for only "wanted" colorgroups, and simply use "pattern" dithering, instead of "diffusion" dithering.
Then convert them back to RGB and save.
And then use them with medals WITHOUT any dithering.
I know it gonna be pretty used MOD eventually, and it's better to get it looking really neat.

BTW, this "outline" border, and vertical line between the text and image wouldn't hurt too. Just to keep xcom athmosphere.

Cheers.

Thanks, Volutar! I really appreciate the feedback.  :)   I'm learning alot.  There is still a ton I don't know about PhotoShop. ;)  (like deleting colors in the pallette to get rid of the "purple" look).

Here is an example of the current remastered award:
https://i.imgur.com/i0kOK5O.png

Dioxine helped me out with some better backgrounds a while back so the current medals look a little better, and yeah, I did turn off dithering on the medallions.

https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,1718.msg34205.html#msg34205

We didn't go with Pattern dithering.  Maybe the contrast was too great.

Also, I'm using the Alien Lifeform Ufopedia entry for the format.  The location of the text would slightly clip the border at the top, if we used the border similar to what you proposed.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the eventual mod popularity. :)

The mod has now been updated to include a English - UK section, and Commendations Entries section in the UFOPedia:

(https://i.imgur.com/CbsedUQ.png)  (https://i.imgur.com/Nwx84bT.png)

YouTube Video Clip of the New Commendations Section:
https://youtu.be/IGWogZ8eyfM?t=32m43s

The New Zipfile is attached in the Opening Post.

Unfortunately the en-GB section is simply a copy and paste from the US section so spellings have not be anglicized, nor any really translation work done there.

Few "patterned" backgrounds (more in 7z).

@ Volutar :

I've been doing some more research and testing into how photoshop limits the ranges of colors and the pattern vs. diffusion methods for the backgrounds.

Here are some examples of the Blue Gradient:

Old version with Diffusion and the HORRIBLE Purple!
(https://i.imgur.com/QbBjduE.png)

New version with Pattern and NO Purple (yay!)
(https://i.imgur.com/gYj7j6T.png)

New version with Diffusion and NO Purple (yay!)
(https://i.imgur.com/wn1gkTU.png)

I'm partial to the latter, but the current one ( the first) definitely has to go.
Title: Re: [COMMENDATIONS] UFOPedia Mod 2.0
Post by: volutar on February 14, 2015, 07:37:11 pm
Ivandogovich, third one suffers from irregular dithering pattern and along with second one - they both have these "too contrast" dissolve transition into "almost black". In this respect first image looks better inspite of irregular dithering pattern.
BTW, second image has bright occasional dots in the "transition to dark" area. It's not good either.

When I was doing my versions, I took only 4 pixels width area, and made gradient which edited by hand, and then just clonned horizontally.

Glad to see you experimenting with this. I hope eventually you'll get really good result.
Title: Re: [COMMENDATIONS] UFOPedia Mod 2.0
Post by: ivandogovich on February 14, 2015, 08:07:10 pm
Yeah, as long as we are working with the black at the top, we are going to have difficulty transitioning from the color to the black.

This is particularly true with the green pallette as there are fewer dark colors in this range for the UFO Research pallette.   -- that is the correct pallette, right?  I can't get away with BaseScape in Ufopedia entries?

It depends on article section.
hardcoded palette names: "PAL_GEOSCAPE", "PAL_BASESCAPE", "PAL_GRAPHS", "PAL_UFOPAEDIA", "PAL_BATTLEPEDIA";

armor, craft_weapon, items: PAL_BATTLEPEDIA
base facilities: PAL_BASESCAPE
crafts, vehicles, alien missions, HWP, xcom crafts (fullscreen): PAL_UFOPAEDIA
ufos: PAL_GEOSCAPE

I'm using the Alien Life form,    type_id: 7 -- what palette is hard coded to that?

EDIT:
And do they correspond to: https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=PALETTES.DAT ??

also, I wouldn't mind knowing where these are in the code so I wouldn't have to bug you. ;)

Title: Re: [COMMENDATIONS] UFOPedia Mod 2.0
Post by: volutar on February 14, 2015, 09:09:46 pm
it's same as crafts (fullscreen images), UFOPAEDIA_TYPE_TEXTIMAGE, which uses PAL_UFOPAEDIA, pre-last.
(https://www.ufopaedia.org/images/0/0d/4_ResearchPal.Png)

According this, only three gradients could be used "seamlessly", grey, steel blue, and blue, and perhaps pink (it goes to dark tones too), but they are all notgoing too dark (except for steel blue). Red gradient is broken to 2 parts, colorgroup1 and beginning of cologroup13, but it doesn't go too dark (just to brown).
So you either make second gradient color not black (not too dark), or will get not very neat dissolving pattern. сиреневый

Unfortunately I'm not set up to be able to do the photoshop work, nor testing in OpenXcom.  :(
My best suggestion might be to use Falko's Pallette converter tools to convert the current 'pedia images to TftD Pallettes and see if that works.

Hi Ivan,

attached to this Post, you find Version 2.1 of the Commendations Mod.

Works now with new nightlies.-.

I overworked the ruleset, fixed some broken palettes, changed the filestructure, made spritesheets.
Sorted all this shit in the rulesetfiles.

There are still some missing graphics, which are currently covered by Placeholders (see README.TXT) file.

Please add additional Information as you see fit in the README.TXT or whatever.
Also the creditlist is for sure not complete, so please add if you know - Thanks.

Just tested this mod and it works fine on latest nightly but when I tried it on a current game using oxce+ 3.7a(the exe is dated back to at least April) it fails to load, it says there is a "bad conversion" at line 88, column 9 in the commendations.rul file. Is this just meant for the nightlies or is 3.7a and the exe I'm using too old an oxce+ version?

For latest commendations support, you'll need oxce+ 3.9... I haven't released it yet, because I am still testing it... but you can try it if you want.
Download here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8itkFQbhj-YcVd6WjNydlRVRHc

PS: You'll need data files from latest nightly too.

The instructions seem clear enough from the first post on the install, putting in each mod resource in the following order (except does "commendationsUfopedia2_0" supersede "CommendationUFOPedia.zip?"

 1  * Commendations_v2.1.zip
2  * CommendationUFOPedia.zip +* commendationsUfopedia2_0.
3 * CommendationsAdded_ID.zip

The big hangup seems to be finding the correct Shoes' mod "Stat Tracking/Soldier Diaries" which should be the link
site (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,1718.0.html)
 --for the nightly version  leads to a file not found.
--Version for OpenXCOM 1.0 file link gives a warning about a crash if used
--Github link appears to be  source files with no metadata.yml or .rul file indicating it is an actual working mod
--and another forum linked has "unofficial extra builds" (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,1718.msg45954.html#msg45954)
--and links to updated rul files (https://pastebin.com/thCz8GW6   again without a clear idea of where the install of the mod is at which itself needs pieces that are posted in the forum).

Yes, where to get all the files and how to correctly install (using the Nightly)?
Thanks

EDIT Jest occured to me I should be posting this in the other forum since you did not set up the Shoes mod(just the supporting files for it here) however the   commendationsUfopedia2_0 does it superceed the earlier version or are both needed?

You need only latest nightly + hellrazor's latest posted mod (Commendations_v2.1.zip), nothing else.

You definitely don't need Shoes' stuff, it's already included in the nightly.

Android OXCE+ v3.9a, Jule nightly built. Final mod pack 1.9.7. Game crashing after going into a soldier awards menu. The soldier just got the Purple heart. Didn't test other medals, but First to serve works well. Watching Purple heart in a ufopedia doesn't cause crash.
Have tried to overwrite the mod merged with FMP by Commendations v2.1, didn't work.
I have installed only music pack and modified SoldierPlus (purchase more experienced soldiers).

For people who would like to use the Commendations mod in TFTD, I am attaching a fix.
All it does is import the required UFO palette, so that it's not just all black.
OXCE+ required.

PS: of course don't forget to change the metadata.yml in Commendations mod... and change master from xcom1 to xcom2, if you want to see it in TFTD mod list

After finishing a hybrid mission and receiving the xenocide award im getting a crash if i scroll past Defenders Of Earth on the award menu of soldiers with a lot of other awards, for example Gerrit van der Meer and Tomas Jelinek.While on other soldiers like Bilal Karim i can't even check their awards without crashing.

Playing with FMP and the Retaliator mod attached.

It's crashing because you are using both FMP and the standalone Commendations mod.

Since FMP contains (an older version of) Commendations mod already... you get conflicts!

Turn off Commendations mod and restart your campaign... or remove all commendations from your save if you know how to do it (ctrl+C in debug mode on geoscape).

I've been looking at the Angel's Cross after Meridian's LP showed a soldier was awarded this from reviving an alien.  The description of the medal that it is for reviving a fellow soldier.

I looked in the code (MedikitState.cpp) and saw this:

Code: [Select]
if (!_revivedTarget)
{
_targetUnit->setTimeUnits(0);
_action->actor->getStatistics()->revivedSoldier++;
_revivedTarget = true;
}

This makes sense with what we saw. It's just keeping track of revives of anything even though the variable says revivedSoldier

Now, I could do it this way:

Code: [Select]
if (!_revivedTarget)
{
_targetUnit->setTimeUnits(0);
        if(_targetUnit->getOriginalFaction() == FACTION_PLAYER)
        {
        _action->actor->getStatistics()->revivedSoldier++;
}
        _revivedTarget = true;
}

But I ran into a problem, when I saw the comments around "revivedSoldier".

Code: [Select]
int revivedSoldier; ///< Tracks how many times this soldier revived another unit

Sounds like this variable should be called "revivedUnit" instead of "revivedSoldier". Which is stored in a save file under revivedUnitTotal:
Code: [Select]
_revivedUnitTotal += unitStatistics->revivedSoldier
Confusing right?

I'm not sure how to proceed with fixing this issue with Angel's Cross.

I could add a new stat that really is for reviving soldiers and renamed revivedSoldier to revivedUnit.  I'm not sure how open the devs will be to adding more statistics.

Then the code becomes this:

Code: [Select]
if (!_revivedTarget)
{
_targetUnit->setTimeUnits(0);
        if(_targetUnit->getOriginalFaction() == FACTION_PLAYER)
        {
       _action->actor->getStatistics()->revivedSoldier++;
}
        _action->actor->getStatiistics()->revivedUnit++;
        _revivedTarget = true;
}

While I'm at, I could add reviving citizens and aliens to boot, but that might be going overboard :)

Or the award could be renamed to just include anybody and no code changes?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

The description for the medal reads "Given to a soldier who returned from the brink a fellow soldier." I suppose it doesn't technically say soldier of the same race! But I do think it's meant for human soldiers only. Adding commendations for reviving other faction's unit could be fun though ;p

The naming conventions used throughout the code are all out of whack. Fixing them would break saves though.

Shoes! You're around! :)

So, would it be better to tweak the text in the award to reflect the current state of the code?

Example:

"Given to soldier who returned from the brink a  fellow being"

I still lurk infrequently :) The github is a great addition!

The best solution will be to fix the code, because some of the flavor from the ufopaedia entry will be lost otherwise. I think the next best thing would be to leave as is; the loss of flavor might not outweigh the gain of being recognized for reviving NPCs ;p

I think the current problem is that it loses it flavor when it's awarded incorrectly as well.  I revive a Sectoid, and I get a medal for reviving my fellow soldier.  Makes me not want to use the mod.  I'm  not sure doing nothing is the appropriate answer either.

I'm going to attempt to rectify the code.  I think I can do it without breaking old save files, but I'll test to be sure.  I'll see if SupSuper&Warboy will accept my changes which will be....

No medal development for reviving civilians or aliens, unless someone wants to do that.  I could probably do it, but it would take me a really long time to get it done.

Before I make any more changes, I figured it would be best to push out the fixes I have implemented in 2.2 revision.

https://github.com/jgatkinsn/Commendations/releases/tag/v2.2

Fixed Nike Cross text to reflect both stunning and killing all aliens as a requirement
Fixed Fallen Star to show "first award" when awarded instead of "sixth award".
Corrected various spelling errors in award text

NOTE: The Nike Cross in this mod is just a text change.  For Nike Cross and Mercy Cross to work correctly, a new nightly build is required as of  openxcom_git_master_2018_04_10_0319

OXCE+ version not yet available.

I see you touched a bit on the fallen star award. The intent with that award was the best squaddie would get first first award, and the best colonel would get the sixth last award. If that's how the code actually works, I forget! However, I have been looking at making changes to the code there. At the moment, the best-of medals are awarded to soldiers who have the best score among other dead soldiers; this means the first time you lose a soldier, they get an award. It's not very special. I attempted to make the code check against both living and dead soldiers, so only the truly exceptional would get an award. I haven't looked at my changes for a few weeks now, nor do I have my github set up, so I will post the code here. Maybe you can do something meaningful with it! https://hastebin.com/ucavawoyah.php

I'll take a look at it.  It was just very confusing to see a soldier  (i think a sergeant for instance) die and immediately get their "sixth" award for the first time  no matter what happened.  You can't get multiple post-humous awards unless you die multiple times which is a little hard to do for us mere mortals :)  With version control we can go back if need be.

My changes got accepted:

https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom/pull/1180#pullrequestreview-114395173

I tested a bunch of different combinations and made sure no old saves were broken by the changes, so it should all work.  Going forward, the current and previous versions of the Commendations mod will exhibit the same incorrect behavior with the  next upcoming nightly build.

I'll get a new Commendations that works correctly pushed out when the new nightly build is available.

EDIT:

Commendations 3.0 is out that fixes the ruleset to use the new stat for awarding the angel's cross.

THIS REQUIRES THE LATEST NIGHTLY:   openxcom_git_master_2018_04_24_2218

If you pair this new mod revision with the older nightly, you may see some strange behavior (like random angel cross awards), but the game will work.

metadata.yml still says v2.1
install.txt requires old nightly version

2/
medals use wrong palette -- last 4 colors
other images have completely wrong palettes (battlescape instead of basescape)

One question popped just up in my mind when i checked the github repo and the commit:

-      STR_MEDAL_REVIVE_DESCRIPTION: "Given to a soldier who returned from the brink a fellow soldier."
+      STR_MEDAL_REVIVE_DESCRIPTION: "Given to a soldier who returned a fellow soldier from the brink of death."

Is this wording correct?

It could be "who returned from the brink of death a fellow soldier" .  I think it could go either way, but "from the brink?"  I've never heard of that without specifying what the brink was.  Brink of what? Insanity? Fever? Chicken pox?

"Go to your Mod folder and delete the old "Commendations" directory."

Where is my Mod folder? I'm trying to install this mod

2nd question, having just downloaded the most recent nightly, I look at the list of mods in the base game, no mendition is made of "Commendations." Is this normal?

Thank you for any help give.

I am not very good manualy installing mods.

Hey Mr Frustrated,

I assume you're on Windows.  If so, there should be a folder in your Documents folder called "OpenXcom".    Extract the Commendations zip file under the "OpenXcom\mods" folder so that you have the set of directories like this "OpenXcom\mods\Commendations".  When you start OpenXcom, the program should find it under there, and it will be available under the "Mods" options where you can enable it by selecting "Yes".

I actually figured the solution last night, but thanks.

My first mission since my reinstallation was my 8 man squad in a night raid against an early appearance of floaters (difficulty level 2) in a shot down medium scout hilly forest squares. They killed 1 guy early, a few rounds later 3 guys, one of my guys panic and freezes (the only time that happens in the mission), finally spotted the enemy, next round that spotter gets killed, found the wreck of a ship that had 2 floaters who died premission, a round later another guy dies, I get a kill, I figure out I must be fighting just 2 now just 1 floater, my guy shots and misses, the floater shots and injures my last guy, I shot more and miss, the last floater kills my last guy. In 10 hits, the 2 living floaters completely wiped out my team. That's Xcom. I didn't bring electro flares, but given at least one of those aholes was in the air and the terrain, I'm not sure how much they would have saved me. I don't normally take heavy weapons but maybe explosive heavy weapons would have served me better, but I hate destroying loot. Wish the reinforcements had arrived before mission, I'm sure 14 man squad would have had 1 survivor.

Ok, perfect.

I put the maxdistanceview at 50 and my game runs fluenty. The nighty releases says that more than 40 is unplayable, but i have no issues.

Anyway, 30 is ok for me.

As soon as you make a more complicated map, you'll see.

Also, a lot of people use non-bleeding-edge hardware.

Also also, why the heck do you need sniper mechanics if the enemies can see 50 tiles far? Are your maps 200x200 ?

Not for the enemies, but for my soldiers. At 20 tiles my accuracy drop because the LOS penalty. I rised the max view to 32, so, i can put long shots (and earn the respective medal), while i can work with spotter/sniper feature with a reasonable penalty to LOS.

Also, after the last mission, in XCOM UD, I kinda was wondering is there going to be patch to hand out the medals after the last mission is complete?

Here is what I see in the archive I had saved (2018):

The difference with the UFO version is the addition of a "Palettes" folder containing the file "xcom1-ufopaedia.pal".
