Title: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on August 26, 2014, 06:37:33 pm
Let's Play OpenXcom (Up Close and Personal) is challenging series based on the notion that long guns are bad.

Only pistols, grenades, and melee are allowed!  Built on  OpenXcom Version 1.0, this LP has a few mods custom made as well as some from the community.  Join the fun as we get into this classic remake!

Post a comment in this thread or on the video, if you'd like to have a soon to die... err... I mean, Brave, Brave Warrior named after you!

Well all in all it wasn't a bad mission, a little too cautious, but not bad at all I was expecting a few more casualties.
Also is there a chance you could post your rooster of upcoming recruits so we can see how far in the queue we are :) I am dying to see my little soldier in action :)

I can say this, in the next couple episodes, we get to add 5 new soldiers, so maybe PVT XRacer joined the team. ;)
After that there are 17 others waiting too. :)

Hi Ivan!

I've just started watching your LP (Just watched the Montreal terror. Thanks for saving some of my compatriots!). You have the most entertaining style I've found in a LP so far! Having a great time watching this.

You have joined the roster of possible recruits!! Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you are enjoying it!   I do enjoy playing and making the LPs even if we have some derpy moments at points!  Like one of my friends told me: "failure can be entertaining too!"  ;)

A good balance of success and failures is what makes a LP interesting (although I don't know if there can be too much failures, that tends to make a short LP!). And a personal connection! I like how you talk to your soldiers and with the easy names, I can remember them.

I need to start doing that too, and stop save scumming.. SUCH a hard habit to break out of!
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on September 26, 2014, 10:10:39 pm
I think that one of my biggest breakthroughs came when I stopped savescumming.  Before that, I would often play with an "optimal" approach.  "Hmmm.. that didn't work right, PVT Snuffy got killed.  Let me see if I moved him this way..."  and thus save scum.  An alternate version for me was, only re-loading on misclicks....  still kind of the same thing.

The interesting thing is, that I didn't even make this breakthrough while gaming.  Rather it came from watching other gamers play, like Marbozir, and how his attitude is, "Oh well, that will be ok.  Stuff happens."  It made me realize that mistakes can be a great part of the game.

This is especially true in games like X-Com, where the loss of a great soldier is very poignant, and even doubly so, if its someone like a viewer or subscriber who is watching and enjoying the game with you.  It just makes you so much more invested in the game, and I really like that.  I think named soldiers are a must have for games like this because it removes one level of anonymity from them.  Makes them less pawns on a chess board.

Cheers, Ivan :D

Hey Ivan! Catching up with your LP slowly, now watching 13.

Still great entertainment! And.. I have to mention Inciendiary and Conflagration :D Man, I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. This was hilarious and you are responsible for making me cry, but it's all good :) I am definitely learning not to reload with you.. If you can get through those, I should make it through my games!

A quick mention regarding mind probes (since you've been experimenting with 'em in the LPs I'm watching): Although you need LoS, you don't need to see the alien. It works exactly like firing a gun. So you don't need to move that close to use it.

Also, why do you not use laser pistols? I've found them to be good short range weapons with their autoshots, so I used to give them to my breachers before I had a mod for shotguns. In the other hand, a taser or stun rod and you're ready to bag or fry some aliens.

And finally: Where did you get your sounds? They sure sound better than my retro ones...

The sounds are from this mod: https://www.openxcom.com/mod/high-quality-sounds but I've reset some back to original ( I think the sectoid death, etc).

And yeah, I just figured out PSI Line of Fire in ep 016! XD  ... but great to know!!  I was asking for trouble on some of those!

And the incendiary Grenade... such a classic moment!!  I still laugh about it too!

Cheers, Ivan :D
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: Arthanor on September 29, 2014, 02:42:28 am
Thanks for the info! I'll look into those sounds.

Trouble is what defines your LP for me: "What kind of trouble will he get into?" and "How will he get out of it?" are two questions that have me going back to your LP more than playing the game (but I'm caught up now!). It makes things really fun. And you have some luck in terrors.. I don't often see 4-5 aliens upon getting out. Holy Cats! I did get a Snakemen + Cyberdiscs night terror mission though (using the alien remix mod), that was "fun".

No comment on laser pistols? I'm still curious ;) And shotguns don't fit the "Up Close and Personal" philosophy, do they? They are pretty close ranged weapons, in fact more so than aimed shots with a pistol.

Finally, I made my own mod regarding psionics, because I thought the "Pisonic Line of Fire" mod was a bit much. I allowed the Mind Probe to disregard LoS. Otherwise it is pretty difficult to use and often it is simpler to stun everything in the navigation/engine room than check which alien to stun. I will be toying with other stuff, like checking if it is possible to add a maximum range to psi-amps (and the aliens' psi weapon), to give XCom short range psi, but aliens longer (with Ethereals having longer range than sectoids). Let me know if that sounds interesting to you.

Right, the laser pistol.  :)
Yep. Great hold out weapon. On auto shot, nice finishers up close.  I've been more interested in the combat knife due to its low time requirements.  And also, if I'm that close, the stun rod or zapper maybe just what the doctor ordered. ;)

Compared to the standard service pistol, though, I don't see it being more effective at range.  The Laser Pistol takes longer to fire, and the service pistol's pretty admirable range and more shots make it a great tool for the early game, so far.  In my test game, I played with laser pistols, but found my self going back to the 10 mm classic. (thats what I like to think of them as, anyway).

And yeah, Shotguns, are just a bit too much "long gun" and what I've seen of them, didn't really make me want to develop a sawn off shotgun.  I may be missing out, but I haven't really given them much more thought.

I really want to get my flashbangs and dart pistols soon, but the Armor Path for survive ability is usually a first priority.

Your PSI scheme sounds pretty interesting, and I think Dioxine had some work like that too. :)

This is my first time playing on PSI Line of Fire, so I'm still figuring it out, but the idea of not getting immediately flayed by Ethereals, was a pretty motivating factor, tbh.  Also the fact that it limits the end game "Mind-Control All The Things" OP mechanic, that is exploitative and boring is an equally huge benefit, imo.

Cheers, Ivan :D

A very good episode, as usual! A few things though:

First, Only 6 recruits left? What are you going to do if and when the list runs out? Lets hope those 6 get promoted soon (Including me, although I bet I'm going to be the absolute last person to be recruited, unless I somehow didn't make the list  :o )

Second, The "UfoPedia" base should correctly represent the "UfoPaedia" website. Basically just add that a inbetween the P and e and you should be good ;D

And third, what are your thoughts about adding the magnum (You know, the one that's in the FMP?) into your lets play? It is a short gun with a powerful bullet but very small clips. I think it's a good addition but I'm not sure if you would accept it.

Please let me know soon!

@RandomCommander  ;)

I gotta tell you that "a" was giving me fits.   .... yeah, in the commendations ufopedia ruleset for the images, I spent hours trying to get it to work.  Guess how the ruleset section was spelled.  Yup, with an "a"   ::)

Code: [Select]
ufopaedia:
  - id: STR_MEDAL_MERIT_STAR_NAME
    type_id: 7
    section: STR_WEAPONS_AND_EQUIPMENT
    image_id: MERIT_STAR_MEDAL_IMAGE
    text: STR_MEDAL_MERIT_STAR_UFOPEDIA
    text_width: 158

As for the Magnum....   When I set my mod pack up, I looked at a lot of mods and pulled things from all over, combat knife, scout drone, fusion torch (not yet seen), incendiary grenades, etc.   I looked at some of the other pistols out there, and didn't come away with any compelling reason to go beyond the standard service issue hardware.  If anything, I've been so impressed with these pistols.  With aimed shots they are far more accurate than I imagined, and have been working for scout and snipe tactics in the early game fairly well.   Getting back to other modded pistols...  I didn't want to add any more to the series, just for flavor sake if they didn't add a compelling distinctive.  I also wanted to avoid any incredibly OP or out of balance items.

Beyond the service pistol, the next big thing is the plasma pistol, for more stopping power.  I'm not sure how well it will compare, really.  I am not incredibly thrilled with laser pistols at this point.  Auto shot it their only attraction and that is only really good for up close in the UfoExtender accuracy model.   And when I get up close, there are other appealing things, like zappers, rods, knives, etc.

That said, I'm not beyond being convinced that the magnum is awesome, and I gotta have it. ;)  What is its actual stats? How does it compare with the others?

My fond anticipation is for my version of the Toxi-gun from Apocalypse. ;)  My dart gun will have increasing levels of potency, that I really want to try against late game foes. :)  Its going to be a ton of fun with those things, but I need a good manufacturing base to keep them fed. ;)

Cheers, Ivan :D

Heh, Revealing myself as a wounded guy with only a purple heart as an award? Now that is just WAC. :P

You had a nice save there with the proxy grenade, It scared us all. There is a way to deactivate, yes deactivate grenades by right-clicking the active grenade. I think that might become really valuable if you make a mistake and have a primed grenade on the floor :) EDIT: This has been proven to only work during base inventory and pre-battle inventory.

R.I.P. First line of defence.

On the bright side it's 8+4/16+4 vs 13+1/15+1! (Remember that scout tank?)

Also, Explosives tend to do less damage on cyberdisks, but the combined power of a proxie plus a HE has put it at low health, so you almost got it!

.....I bet I'm gonna die next episode :P

Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!

Although explosives do less damage on Cyberdiscs, they do hit all four tiles of it, meaning overall they do much more damage than to a 1 tile unit. It is possible to destroy a Cyberdisc with a direct hit from a Large Rocket, so it should be possible with a High Explosive (and if that fails, a few lower calibre explosives should do it).

You're doing pretty well :) Just have to throw those HE pack from a little bit further! Yet another bad thing with cyberdiscs is that it's really difficult to know where they are looking, so it's hard to avoid reaction fire :/

Have you thought of setting the entrance on fire with some incendiary grenades? If you manage to get stuff to catch fire as they cross it, that's a little bit less hp to take off before they die.. (and it won't destroy items like proxy grenades)
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on October 19, 2014, 08:41:33 am
Nice idea about the incendiaries!   but... they were all on the Skyranger, so that's out. :(

I know that an HE Pack can take down a disc, as I've done it before.  I'm not sure if other grenades can overcome their armor.  But they have set off proxies so that may have a chance at damaging them.

Cheers!

That's a really impressive start! Well done! This mission feels like: "OpenXCom: Grenadiers" so many flash bangs! I don't really like grenades as they take too many TUs to prime, but when primed before mission start, they look really powerful.

Also, regarding your question on small scouts: I'm not sure if they land (it probably depends on the mission they are on, they might land for stuff like Alien Research, probably don't for Alien Retaliation) but they can safely be shot down with a craft cannon.

It's a bit annoying to keep a cannon on an interceptor for that, but small scouts pretty much always have a mind probe in them and that's 300k right there, and a pretty easy mission (only one alien to kill). I think it's worth it. In my late games, I usually have bases on both poles and station a cannon interceptor (or thunderstorm, rather) in each one, so they can cover the whole globe.

I've read that about the small scouts and downing them with the cannons.  They might be the perfect "IronMan" generator. XD

I don't have any craft mods in place, but have been considering using the under-used Lightning in this playthrough, as I don't have a need to transport 4x4 Hwps.  Might be just right for my Eurasia Base. :)

Post by: Arthanor on October 24, 2014, 10:35:54 pm
That could be the perfect craft to put a cannon on too! It's a transport, so you really don't want to risk it against stronger crafts any ways. That way, you also get an instant recovery of the small scout with the squad inside.

Many people were joking around with my soldier managing to distract the last cyberdisk by "looking hot," and my friend said "dude, you should really make a picture of this incident, and I have a few ideas to help you..."

I also forgot to mention he's a pervert. So I had to ignore his advice and draw the safest thing I could so I don't get banned in the forum but still pertain to the original idea. The result is this:

They would probably help for Sectopods...
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on November 02, 2014, 04:23:08 am
I have the laser pistol, but the premise is that Long Guns are Bad.

So no laser rifles or heavy lasers. ;)

Right now the service pistol is still awesome against sectoids and floaters, so I'm not moving to the laser pistol yet. :)
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!

Y'know, It would be good to keep a few laser pistols in the skyranger, just in case you need to have one of your soldiers quickly pick up a laser pistol to take care of that damn sectopod over there, right?
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on November 02, 2014, 07:37:35 am
Y'know you are right.  I'm pretty sure those laser pistols will certainly come in handy for polishing the Sectopod's armor and removing unwanted blemishes.

Still a little questionable, everything considered. But it's your choice. I'm just a viewer with an opinion on using the (better) laser pistol.
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: Meridian on November 02, 2014, 08:33:05 am
Before you do something as foolish as shoot Sectopods with a Laser Pistol, let's do some math:

Laser Pistol base damage = 46
... with TFTD damage formula the range is 23 to 69
... Sectopod takes 150% from lasers, so it increases to 35-104

However, the armour of Sectopod looks like this:
- front armour: 145 (i.e. cannot take damage from laser pistol)
- side armour: 130 (cannot take damage)
- rear armour: 100 (can theoretically take damage, but maximum 4 per hit)... the chance to do any damage is 4/70=5.7% and with average damage being 2.5 and health of 96, you'll need to hit him approximately 674-times... good luck with that :D
- under armour: 90 ... using same math you would need to hit him only 192-times :D but I don't really see a Sectopod flying in the air so that you can hit him from below...
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on November 02, 2014, 03:30:13 pm
@Meridian:  Aha! That the tactic then! Just burrow under the Sectopod. Leave only one tile of the four tile unit exposed, and auto shot from below.!! ;)

@Xcomfan419
Actually, just had a similar question (about why I'm not using Laser Pistols) in the comments from a viewer, and a lot of it also boils down to the UfoXtender accuracy setting.

Here's my reply:

Quote
+XxChronOblivionxX  great question.  The simple answer is that in the current configuration the service pistol still works wonders. :)
I have UFOXtender Accuracy turned on which greatly nerfs the accuracy of auto shot. With this setting I'd never try across the map auto shots which become the standard way of doing business with vanilla XCOM. Up close this would work great, and I'll probably start using them more when enemies become less responsive to the service pistol.  I don't mind having to hit an enemy twice to drop him, (I'm used to Lobster Men :) so the pistol is still working.  A huge advantage that the pistol has over the Laser Pistol is time units.  Its almost twice as fast to fire a pistol aimed shot, and the pistol's aimed shot is more accurate too!  So even though the laser beam hits harder, the pistol applies more damage over multiple shots, because you can get more of them, and you hit more often.  So early on, the pistol is working wonders and training my troops by making them more accurate as they increase in marksmanship. :)  There will come a point though, where basic enemy armor will be strong enough that a pistol wont stand much of a chance to scratch it.  Then we will need something better. Laser Pistols, Plasma Pistols, grenades, etc.  I've never before played with pistols, like I am now, but I'm loving it. :)

Cheers, Ivan :D

You would think that it's the opposite, that the Laser Pistol is more accurate than a service pistol, being a laser after all and only travelling straight unless if modified by say a mirror...but it's your modpack afterall. I won't question it.

@XcomFan

Also worth noting is the values from these tables:

https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Firepower_Tables

These are the values for just the three pistols I have access too.

But remember.  A big part of my consideration is how nerfed auto fire is.  Xtender accuracy, pretty much negates auto fire for me in all but "Damn! I'm close.  I have to finish this joker right now!!" situations. ;)

That was an eventful episode! Good decision about that terror mission, it looked like it was gonna be the wrong kind of slaughter ;)

I think it might be time to look into laser pistols (and I was very surprised you didn't pick plasma pistols research), since the base pistol's damage is not enough against snakemen (armor 20-25) and especially chryssalids (armor 34). I don't know which damage formula you use, but either way, with a base damage of 26, the basic pistol will have a hard time doing much.

Or just change the name to "Let's Play OpenXcom: Grenadiers" and toss high explosives, flashbangs and alien grenades everywhere ;)

Good luck on the base mission!

Post by: ivandogovich on November 06, 2014, 06:10:52 pm
Yeah, I'm using TftD Damage formula, because I always want unarmored troopers to die horribly from any and all plasma fire.  This does reduce my chance to "crit" with the pistol, but it also ensures that at least SOME damage is applied.

But the time is coming to Definitely Upgrade to some better hardware.  (just not for a few more episodes. ;)

Cheers, Ivan :D

I use that too. Let the rookies die horribly and help the armoured veterans survive (wounded) better. It does make armour 100+ really strong though. And pistols really useless against chryssalids :P

I'm looking forward to the next episodes. Keep up the good work!

Those flashbangs are murder. 1 for a cyberdisc?! Hum...

Cyberdiscs take 60% damage from high explosives, preventing even large rockets from killing them most of the time. But they take 100% from stun weapons. That's 66% extra damage from equivalent listed damage!. I guess flashbangs (and any other AoE stuns) are really great for taking them on, good to know!

Well done on the defence. The solid block of sectoid corpses at the entrance was pretty funny to see. I was surprised you did not use smoke to hide your snipers so they could step out and fire/throw without fearing reaction fire.

Good point about the smoke.  I never really considered it.  The shooting gallery hallway was long enough that I knew those at the far end usually wouldn't spot or be spotted by enemies near the access lift.  I'll employ smoke midchamber next time, me thinks. ;)

Nice one RandomCommander! :)

Ivan, we want better pistols! I might start a demonstration amongst soldiers :P Even just a laser pistol can do a lot more damage than a regular one to a muton! (20-28 armor vs 26*0.6 = 16 AP or 46 Laser damage).

Plus, we get to shout "Pew Pew" as we shoot! (Lasers are silent, right? It's the soldier making the noise..!)

Hi Ivan! Just caught up with the few last episodes, had been unable to watch for a while. Great job as usual. There was some suspense over the choosing of the potential IronMan. I was thinking "Come on! Scroll down a bit.. here's a Heavy with decent TUs and not much else..!! Pick me!".

If you ever give it another try, I would like to volunteer! My soldier has all you need (TUs & Strength enough for a lot of grenades), and nothing to be wasted (got bad reactions, bad firing accuracy, bad melee accuracy) so he seems to be a good candidate. If you get another small scout, you can shoot them down safely with a cannon, no need to hope that they will land too!

Regarding pistols:
The laser pistol is more like a shotgun. It's really crappy at range (worse aimed shot accuracy at 68% instead of 78%-85%), but you gain an auto-shots. 28% of soldier accuracy looks small, but with 3 shots it can be pretty good up close. That makes it a good breaching weapon since you know you will be at short range any ways. They're great for soldiers with low accuracy (the small FA means they lose less in absolute accuracy than a high FA soldier) and it lets them shoot away with infinite ammo until they manage to hit something.

Comparatively, the plasma pistol is really the "master weapon" better performance up close with the autoshot at 50%, about equal to a service pistol over long range (twice as many TUs to shoot, twice the damage, a bit more accurate).

So scout and snipe should still work: Rookies in the front with lasers, marksmen in the back with plasma. Rookies first when breaching, of course, that's common courtesy! (and makes a lot of sense, weapon/soldier value wise)

Cheers!

Nice run, quite exciting and a welcome change from most LPs. What programs do you use to record and edit?

Although its probably a bit late in the series to change things up, did you ever consider the Equal Terms (https://www.openxcom.com/mod/equal-terms-v1-0) Mod? It adds an machine-pistol, SMG, and Magnum revolver to the mix for a bit more ballistic variety.

Hi ChainsawAardvark!  Thanks, it is definitely a change and its been fun. :)

I use Camtasia studio to capture and pre-render.  I render out the game sound in one track, my commentary in another, and both with the video.  I then edit in Adobe Premiere.  I add the intro, the "Last time" segment from the previous vid, insert the new footage and tracks, edit as necessary, laying a new background music track, adjust sound levels, etc. then render into the final video from Adobe Premiere.

I considered the magnum, but didn't feel like it improved all that much.  The SMG is on the border line of too big in my mental filter for this series.  I didn't really consider the machine pistol either.  I haven't tested any of these, so none of these are informed decisions.  I have only seen some in Jstank's LP and they didn't make that much of an impression.  Because I'm playing with UFOXtender accuracy, auto weapons aren't that appealing.  Though I can see the benefit of a machine pistol in the hands of someone breaching a craft.  The close up multiple hits could help be an insurance policy. ;)

Incubus was slowly moving up the narrow hallway. Captain Green and Tetsu were covering the rear, watching for any Xeno scum that would try to sneak up on their breach team. They could hear muffled firing noises on the other floor; all three of them hoped that those were the other breach team firing.
Incubus looked back towards her two fellow soldiers to check their status, when all of a sudden, a patter of feet on the metallic floor sounded from behind the corner up ahead. Incubus looked back just in time to see a Sectoid taking aim for Tetsu. Her reaction was instinctual. She made a mad dash (PEW) towards the (PEW) little bastard, not (PEW) really caring (PEW) about the plasma (PEW) singing her body (PEW). The pain was bearable enough; Enough for her to backhand the xeno across its huge head, unbalancing it enough to drop its rifle. She kicked it down on the floor and took her trusty service pistol out of her holster, aiming right between the huge, bulbous eyes.
(BANG)
(BANG)
The silence was deafening. Tetsu and Captain Green rushed to hold her up as the shock of the burns began to wear off. Kiaburra from the other breach team rushed through the door up ahead after they radioed the all clear in their section, medical equipment in hand. A few more shots and an explosion came from the other side of the UFO. A few seconds later the all-clear was sounded across the comms.
As she was beginning to lose consciousness... Incubus reflected on the... fear that she saw in the alien's eyes right before pulling the trigger.

Randy Commanderson leaned back in her seat on the transport vehicle, the burns from countless alien grenades once again stinging and burning. Keep this up and she'll never get a date. She turned to Incubus, who seems to have no real name other than his callsign and is clutching his chest which had been shot numerous times. He managed to survive thanks to the flight-capable power armor that works so well for the soldiers.

Randy looked out the window, she's leaving the base in America and being transferred to the one in Africa. She's going to miss hanging out with Milky and Ammon. She would've been able to meet Jay Stank again... if he hadn't died. For the 2nd time. A new batch of genetic recruits are being generated, maybe Jay will be reborn once more.

She shuddered at the thought of herself being cloned. Will she be able to live through that said clone when her regular self dies? Technology says so, but Randy thinks otherwise. It is weird dreaming through the eyes of another recruit, though, which has been a thing since the previous batch of clones. Is this foreshadowing? She doesn't know. She's kind of scared...

Hey, currently at episode #40 so this could get answered down the road, but I have to ask anyway.
I am loosely playing similar scenario and got ethereal terror mission recently. Right of the Skyranger two sectopods were in sight so retreating wasnt an option, it was a must. Just for the sake of "how would it play" I tried it. Let me tell you : unloaded like 20 grenade mix with about 15 HE on single sectopod, had to cheat some mind probe, its research into save to realize that the single sectopod was down to half the hp and rear armor was damaged by 10.
I was glad that I didnt go on that mission, but that forced me into researching the heavy laser which I didnt realize it's long-range, but it was equiped anyway for close-combat the sectopods if we meet them again. Well, now I got landed terror ship with ethereals again, sectopods all over the place. When this was discovered, heavy laser was used (mary-go-round-the-skyranger-landing-gear with one sectopod) and it was disaster. After few rounds I gave up. I tried the blaster packs, but as I was using them first time and the soldiers are pretty low on strength, the result to veteran blaster pack user should be obvious. It did the job, but the guys felt like suicide bombers. And landed UFO just lost its value (well, the ground level was nonexistant after this little skirmish).
So, how do you deal with them ? Is stun damage way to go ?

small edit : i just realized i could have timed those packs better, it wasnt obvious to me at the time of usage :/

Thanks a ton for the battle account!  <gulp>
I have yet to meet any ethereals in my play through.  And Sectopods are my nightmare.  (I've even invented a couple of commendations with them in mind specifically).

The only counter that I have programmed in the UpClose pack is the BlasterPack.  and Yep, you are right.  It brings a whole new meaning to "Danger Close."    I imagine using them with flying units might give a bit more standoff capability (esp if explosions are only set to single level like vanilla).  Otherwise suicide bombing it is.  ( see also Janitor base defense against cyberdisks )

The 2x2 unit's vulnerability to damage from below should help with grenades, but most grenades will have difficulty powering through even that armor.

I'm curious as to the exact type of grenades you were using in your first encounter: standard HE? or HE Packs?  did you try alien grenades, stun grenades (from stun bomb conversion) or flashbangs (the improved flashbangs are pretty strong and may be able to do it)?

And yeah, timing the packs is really tricky.  Every tick is a half turn.
0=explode at the end of my turn or upon impact if playing with "grenades explode on contact"
1=explode at the end of the enemy turn
2=explode at the end of my next turn ( or if I throw it then)
etc.

Cheers, Ivan :D

...
Normal buyable grenades and alien ones - pretty much 1:1 ratio, and HE only (no packs with blaster bombs). I have not yet researched any stun mechanics beyond zapper (and probably wont be using flashbangs or stun grenades as they are too easy to deliver, unlike the small launcher where you need to hit perfectly or have obstacle behind target close enough)
What was really dishearting was that laser try next time around, I had that one heavy laser and few laser pistols and it didnt go well too.

Also, funny sidenote : when trying to find the sectopods attributes, i bumped into article on UFOPaedia (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Rulesets_%28OpenXcom%29) which ended with

LOL! Yeah,  I have not fought a lot of sectopods really (even in standard OpenXcom), but I have the feeling that Heavy Laser in the rear armor is the way to go.

One of the other things I thought about was a Laser Blast grenade designed with the Sectopod in mind.  I discarded the idea with the feeling that it was a little gamey.

Another thought is a Laser Lance -  a stun rod - like melee weapon that does like 150 Laser Damage.   Still may be a suicide mission similar to the BlasterPack but may be doable.  Smoke and a covert approach to the rear of the beast might work, but still hugely risky.   Sounds like it might be fun trying it though. ;)

Laser lance? From the sound of it, you should call it a lightsaber instead :P

ALSO, RP + Pic From Episode 81:

Quote
The gardens in the alien base were creepy to Randy, not being able to see much through the helmet was another factor to the creepiness. "Ammocan" confirmed that the alien blocking her progress was put to sleep, so she advanced on, keeping towards the fire since it illuminates the gardens so well.

BLAMM!

The hiss of plasma fire catches her off guard, She couldn't see where it came from, but she dodged it in the nick of time. There was a fire beside the fire... No, it wasn't really a fire...

And then she saw it. It was metallic and flaming and it was nothing like she has seen. It was the cyberdisc from hell.

Dont you need headshot for this to work ? I do remember no problems with sectopods in my normal plays (aka laser rifle snap&aim spam) but this time around its like tickling the mountain. Still need to discover better strategy other than removing one quarter of the map per sectopod 8)

Maybe those could come in handy, or are Sectopods not stunable at all?
You could try to use High Explosive Packs, they should be able too punch throu the Sectopod Armor, and could give 4 Times Damage.

Nice, thanks.

I don't think we need to see every small scout mission there is, though some summary - perhaps a little 'best of' segment at the start of the episode, with things like hitting four sectoids at once with a single grenade. Since that's just awesome.

Hi Ivan,

I'm slowly catching up with your LP and enjoying it as usual. It's kinda crazy that I decide to watch it instead of playing the game..! But that's a testament to your skills.

I saw your "New Year's Fireworks" experiment, and I thought I would point out that the XAE may have exactly what you want: the Skywarden and Skyguardian craft variants, both of which come with side doors near the front. I've attached one of the promo shots for the Armoury, with the craft and the team displaying their fancy new hardware.

Just doing my first ethereal base : apart from them using blaster bombs all over the place, its good run so far. Manufactured few improved flashbangs and sectopods are going down like candles in the sun. They should get some stun protection :X

Thanks a ton for the battle report!  I was kind of hoping that would be the case, but I wasn't sure if it would be.  I wonder if Stun rounds from a small launcher would be as effective on Sectopods.

One day...I'll be caught up!  Thoroughly enjoying it, Ivan.  I'm past episode 40.  LOVED the first base defense where you got caught with your proverbial pants down.  Awesome job squeaking out a victory too.

I do have a question.  You've been making modifications to the Commendations.  Are those available for the 1.0 release of OpenXcom?
Title: Re: Let's Play OpenXcom: Up Close and Personal!
Post by: ivandogovich on March 06, 2015, 03:35:45 am
Yeah, that base defense was a doozy!

https://www.openxcom.com/mod/commendations-ufopedia-mod
Here is the mod for Commendations.
This works with older version of the Commendations mod.  Shoes has integrated all the UFOpedia entries into the mod, but I couldn't get the updated version of his legacy build to work for me.  I'm not sure how successful others have been.   I did get the Nightly working, but it wouldn't load a campaign in progress.  So you could start a fresh campaign with his nightly build and the UFOpedia would be integrated.

We did some more work about a month ago, where I completely reworked the graphics for the medals.  I've uploaded those for Shoes to integrate, but he has been too busy to get back to it.  I think we also worked on adding another 10 - ish medals.  When he gets some time, I think he will finish off the medals and then trouble shoot the new builds to get a good legacy (1.0) build out, along with another Nightly.

Sometime in the future (after TftD is done), there intentions to integrate it back into the main branch of OpenXcom, so it would be a standard advanced option for the game.

Cheers, Ivan :)

That's good news that there's plans to make it a standard feature of the main game.

I may play around with the code too.  Do you know if his git repo fork has everything in it?

This is my working Branch:
https://github.com/IvanDogovich/OpenXcom/tree/AR-ID-Working

Its a branch of Shoes' branch, but it has all my graphics and UFOpedia updates.  You could definitely download my items and add them to a working build.  I have a pull request in to Shoes to have him pull this stuff in, but he hasn't had time.  (here's my PR : https://github.com/Shoes01/OpenXcom/pull/10)

I mix the background music for every vid and try to vary it for the different moods, ie, battle, base management, etc.  I include information on every track I use in the descriptions.  The majority I have gleaned from SoundCloud. :)

Ah ok so its an overlay, which you do after you record right?

Ah ok so its an overlay, which you do after you record right?

Yeah, I record with no game music, just sound effects.  My recording software records two tracks: Game or system track with the sound effects, and my vocal track from my mic.

In post production, I cut in a "Last time" segment from the previous episode, footage from the new episode, and set up the music tracks to go with the episode.  I'd guess I have around 50 tracks that I use so I try not to repeat them too much, and try to keep it fresh.

I actually recently organized my music tracks into some categories for easier management.
Ambient is for the base management and Geoscape.
Battle is for battlescape and tends to be faster and more dramatic.
Brooding is to help set up some more drama during battles... i.e. night battleship fights.
Bright is faster and more upbeat and can be used for battlescape or geoscape.
And Epic has some awesome scores that can be a pretty amazing intro to or closing to a battle or an episode.

I usually settle on one signature piece for the beginning and end of each video.  "Pirates of Elmia" is the end piece that I have used for quite a while.  (I actually used it as intro and outro on much of my TftD series).  Its such an amazing piece, I never grow tired of it. :)

Probably not. :(  I've only got a few more months to do LPs, and I don't think I'll have time to get any more XCOM series going. :(
I'll probably do a Colonization (Civ IV) series as it can be a pretty short game.

Not sure if this is the right place Ivan but was wondering if u cud help me on this one. I wanted to add just the BlasterPack from ur mod into my current game but I've run into problems. First of all I had to copy in the resources the blasterpack.gif file and rename the copy HandOb_blasterpack.gif otherwise it wasn't loading. Then I had to tweak the rul file in the handob section. After that I tested it on an Ethereal Terror site and all seemed well til OPXC crashed with this error message "invalid vector<T> subscript". Attached below is my alterations, thanks in advance. Very good series of videos so far as I'm halfway thru episode 98 atm.

Yeah, I have a few.

A. Incidenary grenade going off in the skyranger
B. Base defense with a handful of rookies with proxies, HE packs, and pistols against cyberdiscs.
C. Numerous times watching you prime grenades and thinking you primed them while ignoring the "Not enough Time Units" messages, then the exclamation of surprise later that their grenade isn't primed:)
D. Blaster pack kickbacks and surprise explosions

LOL! Heresy! No Grenades!

I have thought that putting together a "Heavy Metal" mod could be fun. :)

This would only allow robotic combat forces.  All the original tanks would be in play and their modded variants (i.e. Laser Hover Tanks).  All the other HWP mods would be in too, like the dual weapon tanks, 1 tile drones and UAV's, as well as CyberDisc, Sectopod, and Enforcer mods.  Could be a fun run. :)

The reality of my schedule probably precludes me doing a full LP of any mod.

I'll probably do some light stuff in the mean time.  I've done a couple Lets Tries of "Out There: Omega Edition" this weekend.  Its a pretty cool Sci-Fi rogue-like quite similar to Faster than Light (FTL).  I've got a hankering to do some more of those.

I'll probably throw down a Civ IV Colonization LP too, for a quick Revolutionary difficulty win.

But I think that I'll probably start a Piratez run after that.  I have a sense that Meridian might pick it up where I leave it off, and I'll wait for Dioxine to release .90 version. :)

Well, there is no other game like Master of Orion ][. Period.

There were a number of attempts, like the Gal Civ series, but none could withstand the comparison. Well, maybe except for the Birth of the Empires, which is a very solid 4X game in space but generally simpler (well, it's a one man studio).
