Title: Extended debriefing screen - soldier stats progression
Post by: michal on September 18, 2011, 12:10:09 pm
Ufo: TTS had something like that implemented, after finishing battle, you could go to second page, where you could see how soldier stats progressed.

This is indeed a good suggestion and this can assist gameplay.  We can consider to implement this after V1.0.

What about medals for heroic action ( most kills single mission, most kills total, most interesting death) and maybe also log them in  a hall of fame

Yeah, a "Best of" page would be nice.

Here is a quick list:

Names, dates, region and some other information for each category would be nice.

I did not go that crazy as you guys (because I'm a programmer and I want to keep the amount of work to a minimum :p)
I got the following in my mod design:
A soldiers hall of fame, with for each soldier the recruitment date, number of kills & missions, the KIA/MIA date, it's rank and 3 possible medals he/she earned.
The 3 medals an agent can earn are : Expert Marksman, Expert Explosives, Expert Medical.
Conditions for these medals are still to be confirmed.

On the soldier progression of stats: this is done while in combat, not at the debriefing and it is announced in the messages window.
( it's the idea of making the player more aware that bringing units into combat is a good thing for their stats. When he only sees this at debriefing he already forgot how he got those skill increases.)

Just wanted to show my support for such a brilliant idea --> soldier stats progression

Might I suggest that in such a screen, the names of the soldiers could be changed as well?

The reason is that alot of people play with stat strings in names, and stat changes would mean stat string changes.  Writing down all the names for changes and then going to "Soldier" screen to change their names one by one seems ... rather annyong.

I suppose that is not too hard to implement a option that will show in the soldier's name a shorthand of it's stats.

The reason people did that, was it not a workaround because lots of the screens did not contain stat info, when you needed this info to make certain decisions? It's a matter of giving the users that info, rather than forcing them to abuse a field for it.

Yes, don't forget that in OpenXcom you can access the soldier stats from the inventory. :P

What about a "roll of the dead" showing:

Soldier Name
Recruitment Date
Death Date
Killed by [Alien] using [Weapon]

A lot of people on the net like to play "LetsPlay!" semi role playing games in which they use the names of forumgoers (or suggestions from said forumgoers), for XCOM operatives; and the death count can get pretty grim at times.

Do you want me to work on the medals?

Do you want a ribbon only, or both a ribbon and medal -- and what dimensions are you looking at?

(also what palette would be the best for the medals itself?)

RyanCrierie, hold your horses :) I'm merely sharing an idea here, as I thought it was related.

But the suggestion from Michal is realistic to implement without much other changes, since the progression stats are calculated at the end of battle anyway. So it's just another screen to popup to show the results of these calculations. And again, it can easely be put behind an option to only show it when you enable it.

Well i guess it doesn't affect actual gameplay, it's only interface improvement, so maybe there isn't sense to make it optionable?

I don't see any reason to make this optional , My understanding was that you where always going to make this a improved version of X-com without changing the Feel of the game, a example SupSuper used  in a interview was to open doors with a click of a button.

As long as the screen keeps the same style as the rest of the game i don't see any issue with just adding it  as if you don't want to see this information than don't go into that screen.   Personally i don't like the graph screen so i generally don't ever look at it :)

Well, normally there is always some purist in this discussion that has some reason to make things like this optional :p
I guess there is no clear rule what affects gameplay and what does not.

A combatlog in the battlescape that gives you info like:
- Yasuaki Okamoto suffered 5 damage from bleeding fatal wounds.
- Yasuaki Okamoto's Snap Shot hits Sectoid Soldier for 16.

I ask myself is that something that should or shouldn't be optional? Maybe some people prefer not to see this?

info about your solders is ok, but info about aliens not, because its give you information about things you normally dont know
e.g.
you throw grenade and you see 2 hits - there are more aliens than you think.
you see  rank of alien without mind probe
you can know race of enemy before you see first one in battlescape

- Yasuaki Okamoto suffered 5 damage from bleeding fatal wounds.
- Yasuaki Okamoto's Snap Shot critically hits Alien.

Approved, or not yet? :)

Approved :D

but i have crazy idea.
-first of all you will get feedback on alien only if you see him
-with every autopsy of alien race you grain knowledge about that race stats
-if you have experienced solder or many alien autopsy you could say exactly how many dmg that alien get or hp left

but this is probably out of scope of version 1.0 :)

Why not make it an option: Detailed reports / Simple Reports for in game log presentation?

Detailed is like what you posited; Yasuaki Okamoto's Snap Shot hits Sectoid Soldier for 16..

Simple doesn't reveal as much like you also posited: Yasuaki Okamoto's Snap Shot critically hits Alien.

Of course, I'd have the detailed report also generated and automatically appended to a TXT log file that is attached to that savegame.

If anything else, the text logging would make debugging a lot easier; to find pesky bugs regarding weapons formulae, etc.

Approved ,but i also like Yanks ideas

"-with every autopsy of alien race you grain knowledge about that race stats

Yes, this is something that should be optional.

- Yasuaki Okamoto's Snap Shot hits Sectoid Soldier for 16.
Someone tossed an idea around on showing the exact details only when the alien is researched (or similar, I don't remember the exact discussion)

I'm going to get roasted for this, but are there any plans to allow for alternate progression methods? The ability progression ethod of the original X-Com was the only bit that really did not mesh with my fun.
