Title: Numbering of detected alien bases [POOL]
Post by: redv on August 13, 2014, 04:48:44 pm
I expect, that every one of you, as fans of Xcom, well know about pro&contra of this issue.
Therefore I'm interested to know your opinion.

3)
alien base should have the option to set a name
see https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom/pull/930

on topic:
i like the id after building time so finding a base with a ++2 higher number than the last i found means i have another one somewhere

if you are pedantic you could say such use would be an exploit

May be, but my question not about custom name, but about numbering by default:)

I think it should be named in order of XCom discovery, otherwise, it reveals information that shouldn't be.

If we were talking after a base attack, then getting the information about which base this was could make sense. It was discovered in the files/data from the command center. But just as you discover it? Not unless the aliens put a big number on top of their base to make sure the UFOs know where they land! ;)

I wish you had proposed a third choice "This has never mattered to me in vanilla, and never will matter when I play OpenXcom".

Then would it bother you if it were implemented?

If it never mattered to you and still doesn't, why post?

I agree it is a very minor feature, but it adds a bit more information to the game at no inconvenience, so if someone wants to do it, why not?

Personally, I don't care if nothing is done, or XCom numbering is implemented. I would mind if it provided extremely relevant information you have no reason to have access to, like which base it is from the aliens' perspective. I would then find myself looking for bases I shouldn't know about and thinking: "I really shouldn't be exploiting this", or having to refrain from taking into account information that stares me in the face. That breaks the immersion and enjoyment in the game.

I agree.
It may not be a major issue but a numbering based on the order of founding by aliens reveals information you should not have.

Because redv asked for people's opinion...
My opinion is that even though the "discovery id" is theorically better, in practice I think the base discoveries are far apart enough (with many real-life hours of battles in-between) that I never notice any jump.

I agree.
It may not be a major issue but a numbering based on the order of founding by aliens reveals information you should not have.

But you already have that info when playing: once you learn how to interpret the Alien Activity graphs it is easy to figure out when a base has been built.

Finding out that the aliens already have 3 bases when you've just found your first alien base means that you haven't been playing attention to the graphs.

You can use the graphs to point out that there might be something you're missing, sure.

But numbering the bases by founding order is telling you unambiguously, for no effort whatsoever, what is happening. It's not telling you where the bases are, but it is telling you "There are X unaccounted for bases", as soon as you discover one, for free.

Isn't it the same for UFOs? They get numbered as the radars catch them? Or do I catch 100% of the UFOs in my game? That seems very unlikely...
