After researching all the laser technology you are going to skip plasma for heavy plasma because unlike the heavy laser,it has auto fire and it is the most powerfull weapon in vannila,the disadvantage of being heavy is dud unless you somehow get a rookie with 15 strenght
And that it takes slightly more space than the plasma rifle which you really shouldnt worry about.
Also it makes mutons and ethreals die in 1-2 hits where with the plasma you would need to get lucky to insta-kill even a muton.

I use it sometimes for my snipers to do long range snap shots so you can get a lot of sustained accurate firepower per turn. It's also better for accurate reaction fire

It is pretty useful in Solar's Alien Armory Expanded mod, where it takes several months longer to stockpile enough Heavy Plasma.

I do have the mod and i still stockpiled enough heavy plasma for the rest of the game.

Sometimes I skip lasers and go directly to Plasma Rifle.

I like to stock the plasma rifle and it's clips (which are really magazines) for a while and then distribute them to all of my bases, using them for base defence. I find them better for taking on Mutons and Ethereals rather than the Laser Rifle. Really accurate and powerful. Second only to the Heavy Plasma really. (Blaster Launcher doesn't count here)
I also use them to replace Laser Rifles ASAP until I can stock heavy plasmas. Even so, I still use them in my bases, which is fun enough :)
Overall, I believe they do most of the work in my bases. While my squad with flying and power armour takes on the next battleship, the rookies and squaddies in my ChinaCOM base take a knee and fire away at incoming Snakemen, Floaters, Mutons and Ethereals.
It's a good rifle. Not the best, but it's still good.
I kinda wish someone would make a Heavy Plasma rebalance so it's more in line with the rest of the "Heavy" rifles in the game. I really like the plasma rifle.

Thanks to mods the Heavy Plasma (and Heavy Laser) fills more of a heavy weapons role in my game, and leaves room for the plasma rifle's strengths to shine. It's the standard weapon for me, but it's always important to have a heavy laser on hand to deal with armored units or groups of mutons.
Otherwise, though, I probably would never use the plasma rifle.
