Title: Steam and the UFO trilogy
Post by: SenniTrebor on July 10, 2014, 11:15:19 pm
Having just completed UFO Aftermath with the Combo 3.3 mod. I tried to play both Aftershock and Afterlight only to find that they do not work. I was wondering how many other people find that Steam sells games that do not work for the enduser? I am using Win7.
I may never buy a game via steam again. I am extremely hacked off. Any body suggest other sources for games?

Well, before throwing a tantrum please be advised that they both work perfectly fine for me. And a lot of other people I know. (Though I don't use the Steam version.)

I'd give you some advice, but the game never gave me any problems, so sadly I can't.

They can't predict the setup of every possible end user, same as when a new game is released in stores. If an older game is popular enough, the community usually has a very helpful guide on how to get it to run properly. Right click your game and look in the "community hub."

I can recommend gog.com

It is not perfect either, but at least less annoying than steam.

I bought X-Com games from Steam and it was ok, though the dos box was old version that they had adjusted the games to work with. After that I bought Civ 5 from my local store and it requires Steam to play, and it requires Steam to update every time you want to play, and it requires the whole Civ 5 to update when you want to play... it was enough for me, trying to avoid it now as much as I can.

Did manage to get afterlight to play, no luck with aftershock!
Other posts on steam discussions do seem to indicate a a problem with steam aftershock and win7.

Since you already own the game and have paid for it, perhaps just torrent some other version and use it instead?

Thank you, good idea.
