Title: [DONE] [Suggestion] But where are they? (Aliens location)
Post by: Unknown Hero on June 24, 2014, 01:45:10 am
7) Want to see all the aliens seen by all your soldiers and have quick access to them?

For the selected soldier, 2 red flashing squares (with number 1 and 2) appears in the right of the Battlescape screen, just above the Control Bar (default).
Left clicking on one of the red flashing squares centers the Battlescape on the alien.

The 2 yellow flashing squares (with number 3 and 4) are spotted aliens seen by the other soldiers.
Left clicking on one of the yellow flashing squares centers the Battlescape on the alien without deselect the current selected soldier.
Right clicking on one of the yellow flashing squares centers the Battlescape on the alien and selects the nearest soldier to this alien with enough TUs to act.

Absolutely, but I think this is already done.

Yellow didn't look very good (because of palette/shading), so I took green.

See attached.

I have just played my first two missions with this feature... it is absolutely amazing!
I am never gonna play xcom without it, ever.

Bless you Unknown Hero for suggesting it... bless you, your children, their children and all their descendants for 10 generations.

Could make a Pull request of this feature into the Master tree by SupSuper? It sounds amazing.
I do not think Green is a good idea, even thou you could see it as a indiator, i can probably shoot those Aliens without fearing reactionfire.

Maybe you diversify those even more ading a third color.
Red  - Aliens directly in Sight as usually
Green - Aliens visible by other Soldier, but selected Soldier has a valid Line of Fire.
Orange - Aliens visible by other Soldier, but selected Soldier has no valid Line of Fire.

That should basically handle all cases i guess :)

Well, the current implementation is a bit different.

Red = aliens directly in sight
Green = aliens spotted by anyone during the current turn (they don't have to be visible by anyone... for example soldier who spotted them has already died, or just turned away or even returned back)

I use the feature as a reminder that there are still some (unhandled) aliens left... it happens to me too often that I spot 10 aliens, kill 9, forget the last 1... which then goes on a blaster launcher rampage and kills half of my squad :-)

Also, it is useful for snipers, to help me aim easily on targets they can't directly see.

Well in my proposal Orange could also be used for the case you described, so showing all the aliens once spotted in the turn.

I'd go with Meridian's solution here, having three types with relatively convoluted rules is bad for tactics. :)

Question for everyone:

The green indicator currently shows also enemy units, which are mind-controlled, i.e. not dangerous.
Would you prefer that to stay like that, or should mind-controlled (or otherwise temporarily converted) units not be indicated?

I myself probably prefer the way it is now... I tend to kill mind-controlled enemies near the end of turn anyway... and this way I won't forget...

... but I also understand the reasoning for the opposite.

Any ideas/comments/suggestions?

I'd don't really care either way, but then again I haven't MCed anyone in a long time. :)

Green for MC-ed alien units is as good as it gets IMO, as they're of no danger and you still have a reminder. If anything, I'd change indicator's color for your own soldiers who are controlled by aliens (to flashing orange/yellow or flashing blue or flashing gray?), once spotted, no matter if they're visible or not, but that's just fussing over details.

How does your engine handle >10 aliens? :)

Your soldiers controlled by aliens will be in red indicator part, but not in the green indicator part... exactly the opposite of mind-controlled aliens (which are in green, but not red).

There is maximum of 10 indicators (all red first, then green). After 10, they are just ignored... but as soon as you kill let's say number #6, all are moved down and previous #11 would be visible in slot #10.

OK, but red marks (aliens visible to the current soldier) should always have priority.

I like the idea of hellrazor for the line of fire indicator. It would be nice to know if you have a line of fire other than the error message when you try to shoot something.
The situation where this is important is when you want to kneel before shooting but don't know if you actually have a line of fire.
