So um, about that other true X-COM? The one with all the game-breaking bugs, techtree dead-ends, Lovecraftian themes, dark music, flying chrysalids, and extremely long 2-stage missions?
I was lead to understand that:
1. "After 1.0"
2. TFTD is almost identical from an engine perspective with the exception of some extra functionality and a few hard to crack alien weirdness's
3. Almost all of the TFTD specific functionality and most of the new race weirdness has already been replicated in Openxcom either in enhancements or mods.
So, where do we start?
The last time I tried to turn OpenXcom into OpenTFTD I found that I was able to get the game to run by renaming TFTD files to their EU equivelants, but I quickly ran into issues with parts of the engine expecting the exact data from EU.
I don't remember the details. I got tired of renaming files but more importantly a lot of important info was coming from the ruleset. I started converting things in the ruleset but I quickly ran into the problem that I couldn't figure out what half the stuff in the ruleset was.
Questions:
1. Should I start building a TFTD ruleset by changing everything I do understand so someone else can continue from there? Has anyone already started doing this? Do I have to use the GIT versioning repo stuff to be helpful?
2. Has anyone gotten a recent version of openTFTD running?
3. Aside from the drudgery tasks like strings/translation, converting the basic stuff in the ruleset etc; what stands between what we have now and openTFTD?
4. Did u devs want a break first? Cause you damn well earned it. Not as if you needed to but you F-ing did!
-
The short version is: TFTD is exactly the same... except that all the graphics, sounds, text strings, maps, missions, units, globe, rules, etc are completely different. :P
Anyways there is already a TFTD ruleset and the like under the works, no need to jump the gun. :) We will reveal more when necessary.

Apocalypse is a whole different beast right? (stupid question, just to be sure since I'm doing a tribute mod).
-
i think the game need to change the way it start, it have to start to a menu screen whit 3 buttons
1. xcom ufo defense
2. xcom TFTD
3. Complete mods
then button 1 play the game intro then the actual menu - new game, load, etc.
button 2 play tftd intro (maybe you can implement a flv or mp4 player) then a copy of actual menu.
button 3 loads a "complete mod" selection menu, here you can see only the name but a logo too, the complete mods can be: "Apocalypse tribute", Doom, Piatez, etz
each mod whit a complete change of color scheme alien races music and everything you can imagine without change code.

Yes, quite significantly

I have to echo the huge Kudos for the progress here on 1.0 and the great revitalization that it has brought to this classic!! :D
I also want to state that I have a huge problem with the puddle of drool that keeps accumulating on my Desk and Keyboard as I anticipate an up to date OpenTFTD port! Woot! <grabs towel, and wipes keyboard>.
Cheers, Ivan :D

I'm also impatiently waiting for TFTD. Not exactly because of the game itself, since I never liked it much (it looked awful and was annoying in design), but because of some of its functionalities I'd like to see in OpenXCom (like making aliens able to have natural weapons AND normal weapons).
-
So glad for 1.0! OpenXCOM makes this old fan soooo happy!
Good things come to those who wait, but yeah, excited for an OpenTFTD... it was my first XCOM, funny as it sounds, as I only went back to play the original after I beat TFTD.
I'm especially excited for OpenTFTD if the modders are still committed to a combined EU/TFTD hybrid mod.... throw in some MiB...
-
I vote for an hybrid game
Cydonia coordinates could be found at T'Leth
In my fantasy, Avenger craft could be build on Moonbase ... before the trip to Mars
New weapons and new alien race,
we have already a lot of them,
could be scale/diversificate during this long quest
I apologize for repeat again my little opinion :-[ :-X

Some time ago I made a thread about hybrid games: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=1851.0
It has some interesting thoughts from the community. :)

I vote for such game to be called TUFTFOD: Terror Unknown From The Flying Object Deep! ;)

I thought it would be Unknown Flying Terror From The Deep Object, but then I decided it sounds like a Lovecraftian porn flic. :P

Terror From The Unknown Deep Flying Object?

If you guys are really that enthusiastic for a hybrid game, essentially the first step is developing and perfecting support for all of TFTD's assets... by which time a TFTD ruleset will most likely be complete and OpenTFTD will be done. So either way it's better to focus on what can be done to code in support for TFTD.

Perhaps there's been some confusion here, I think you underestimate what openxcom already can and does do. In fact I can't think of one thing that TFTDs engine has that's not currently fully functional in openxcom.
-AI can use melee weapons, both carried weapons and racial abilities. Ever heard of a chrysalid?
-Doors can be look-opened
-I think there's support for custom damage types from mods (like freeze, drill, or lightsaber if you want)
-Manufacture can create multiple items an hour
-can view stats from equip screen
-multistage missions are supported for cydonia, I think that's available to modders too.
-modders can add new mission types, I'm not sure if anyones done it yet.
-I never saw it in tftd but we have a TU bleed button in OXC now... I can't think of anything else and I've been playing TFTD all week.
OH, there's no under-water in OXC, and as such there might not be any functionality in place to run the second audio track. Or maybe it's in the code but not connected to anything in the ruleset. Also I don't know if OXC currently supports alternate color indexes - I'm pretty sure TFTD uses different color indexes for light levels underwater and above water.

Well, personalli OpenXcom and the (furure) opneTFDT should be 2 separated programs, but for both of the I'd add a mod menu, where to go in order to activate mods and/or total converiosn or whatever.

-AI can use melee weapons, both carried weapons and racial abilities. Ever heard of a chrysalid?
Ever heard of a chryssalid with a plasma rifle? Me neither, since it's not possible now. :P They can either use fixed weapons or hand-held weapons, not both at the same time (aliens with fixed weapons can't have inventory).
-I think there's support for custom damage types from mods (like freeze, drill, or lightsaber if you want)
Sadly, no. No custom damage is possible at this point, though I heard some promises.
But I agree with most of your points.
- I'm pretty sure TFTD uses different color indexes for light levels underwater and above water.
I think it's just a semi-transparent texture over normal graphics, though I'm not 100% sure.
-
every deep leaver have separate palette: https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=PALETTES.DAT
Only thing that I know that OXC dont support is bullets traces underwater rest should be doable.
-

promises? rumours at best. i don't believe there are any such plans, TFTD's "freeze" damage was simply re-labelled acid damage. if you want MORE damage types you'd have to tinker with the source code yourself, i'm afraid.

actually you're both wrong. it had 4 different palettes: one for each depth and one for land.

Uwaaaaaaaaaahhhhh! :'(
Oh well, thanks for clearing things up.

Mi-Go and shoggoths? There could be some interesting equipment and armor options as well.

Mi-Go and shoggoths?
If we're still talking about Lovecraftian porn flicks I don't really want to know what that might mean!
-

I learned from reddit that "I don't want to know" means "please violate my innocence!": Lovecraftian Romance (https://"https://kosmograd.deviantart.com/art/Betrothed-to-Yog-Sothoth-281451577")
Unfortunately everyone's favorite racist was too politically correct to actually sexualize blasphemic perversions.
-
I'm not sure if a Lovecraftian Porn Flick can be properly termed bestiality or an abomination. Except of course in the sense that Lovecraftian creatures are abominations. I still think there are some interesting equipment and armor options available.

I found the perfect poster for the TFTD release:
From: https://black-red-escape.deviantart.com/art/From-the-Deep-262156740
The guy wrote it was "just for fun", so he might actually agree to contribute this piece. And I like it a lot.
-
Yeah, that poster is awesome! I like it too :)

Don't forget to include the Little Mermaid on v1.0

Just registered to give me 100% thanks for this amazing effort by the devs - I never played the original x-com, starting on from TFTD which I absolutely loved and this has inspired me to try it out. Having a lot of fun so far!
One quick question relevant to TFTD 1.0 whenever that is ready - are there plans to implement alien colonies by Alien type, so they aren't always Lobstermen/Tentacults on the 2nd level? The one thing made me want to always play the original was having each base have a set race to promote more variety - now that I can play with the many many improvements I'm looking forward to this. :)

Hello, Boooster!
Actually, I fully support this idea. More diversity is not only more fun, but also more moddability! :D
-
we'll be shooting for an accurate recreation of vanilla so it will have lobstermen and tentaculats where the original did.
HOWEVER: OpenXCom is moddable enough that you would easily be able to change that.

I propose that this should not be allowed... TFTD fans should be purists and be stuck only with seafood and swimming brains for their alien colonies (jk) :P

Based on what's happened with UFO it will be one of the options in the options menu or a built in MOD and will be disabled by default. Racial bases are already supported by TFTD Extender and all the popular core MODs from UFO Extender are already built into OXC.
Short answer - YES: openTFTD will have race specific colony missions. (off by default)
