Jump Armour mod 1.3
Ever since I started playing the original game back in 1997, it has always bothered me that Floaters use compact, efficient anti-gravity units, yet X-Com doesn't use this technology at all, before the Flying Suit anyway (which is irrelevant to Floaters). I thought it would be cool if we could use these devices to our ends instead of selling them for $20000 along with the rest of the corpse. Now, in 2014, I can finally make this dream come true, and share it with all of you!
An up-to-date version always here: https://www.openxcom.com/mod/jump-armour
Jump Armour is a modified Personal Armour with a working Floater anti-gravity unit installed. The tactical advantage gained from its flying capabilities is obvious, even though it offers less protection than the basic design, as it needs to remain light (Floaters aren't massive, and therefore their flying devices aren't very strong). It only costs 3 Alien Alloys instead of 4, but a Floater corpse is also required as a raw material. The research requires Personal Armor, UFO Navigation (as it needs advanced controls) and, naturally, Floater autopsy.
When I was messing around with sprites, I stumbled on Warboy1982's resources, including his green armour (actually a recoloured armour from X-Com: Terror from the Deep). With Warboy's permission, I used his (slightly tweaked) sprites to save myself a lot of work. I think the end result looks decent. Thanks, man!

Please note it's not as extensively tested as it should be (even though it should work fine), so any feedback is much appreciated.
EDIT: Slight technical update, see readme for details.
EDIT: Sprites now combined into a single sheet, using this tool made by Falko (https://falkooxc.pythonanywhere.com/sprites2png). Now it's smaller and hopefully faster.
EDIT: This armour is now featured in Clownagent's Grav Armour mod (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=2465.0). It includes my Jump Armour, but also a Grav Module which is just a flying backpack and is available before the Alien Alloys are researched. It also uses IMHO better sprites, more consistent with the Personal Armour design, but if you want the green version, use the Jump Armour graphics.

Cool; when you called it jump armor, I imagined the units falling to the ground at the end of every turn, or having their flying capabilities limited in some other respect.
Simply being bare-bones armor with an anti-grav device strapped on is cool too, good work!

Hi, I'm new here, hope you don't mind but I edited your files to be computable with the combat armor mod. Great armor mod by the way :)
-
Hmm, interesting, Fox. I thought differentiating sprite numbers etc. was unnecessary, as long as the numbers are in different rulesets and do not conflict with the basic ruleset. I may have been wrong though, I'm pretty new to modding OpenXcom and haven't tested it yet. :)
Many thanks for your contribution!

Nah, you're probably right. It's just a lot of work to recolour it properly and not exactly my top priority at this point... I would like to do it some time though :)
Thanks for the kind words!

I added a Polish translation. Since the site is temporarily down, I'm putting the update here.

Nice job
A suggestion : perhaps include your updates directly in first (i.e. head) message

Well, the site should be back in a few days, so I was too lazy. :P Once it's back, I'll just update all mods.
And thanks!

strings:

Thank you! It's added, I'll update the mod when the mod site is back online.

I made some more 'conservative' colored sprites for a jump armor based on the vanilla personal and flying armors.
Maybe someone is interested.
-
Always interested...
Yours is nice and coherent, the green is nice and fresh, how to choose between both...

It's beautiful.
I think I'll use your sprites, if I can, and move the old green model to be something else.

Like an armor against Chrysalids ?

Like an armor against Chrysalids ?
Don't be silly, the Jump Armour is the armour against Chrysalids. :)
Seriously though, I'll make some other branch of armours. Something with less protection but stat bonuses.
-
BTW if you want use different hair colors in game you should have male blond too.

But adding stat bonuses is not possible, is it ?

Sure it is! Armour can modify any stat, from TUs to Psi Strength.
The Piratez mod uses this system heavily. You should try it :)

Question : has the Jump.png to be split in 288 elements to make it work ?

You can just load the sprite table in the 'extraSprites' section of your ruleset:
- type: XCOM_5.PCK
width: 1024
height: 360
subX: 32
subY: 40
files:
0: Resources/.../JumpArmor/jump.png
Then it is automatically divided into sub-pictures.

Hi from Poland. :)
I'll look into it when I can.

If you are interested in this mod, I would suggest using Clownagent's Grav Armour mod (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=2465.0) instead. It includes my Jump Armour, but also a Grav Module which is just a flying backpack and is available before the Alien Alloys are researched. Yea, I saw it does that like the old Jump armor design. So...

Without funky hair colors, use my version! :P
With all due credits to Clownagent, ofc.

Ah thanks for the hint. I fixed the hair color also in the GravArmors mod.
