Title: Problem adding new weapons images :/
Post by: Amiga on January 09, 2014, 11:35:14 pm
Hi,
I have small problem with weapons images. For example, I opened proper Rifle image in Infran View then I saved colour palette. I download simple black/grey weapon image then I imported my
palette setting. Unfortunatelly new image doesn't work in game. Anybody knows easy way how to do it? I tried to use GIMP - I can edit existing weapons but still importing new images doesn't work.
I appreciate any help

What do you mean it doesn't work? i doesn't show up at all. or it shows with the colors all messed up? If it doesn't show up and you are adding a weapon maybe you didn't create that weapon in the ruleset, if it is just the colors then is just a matter of the palette and the program you are using.

Ruleset are fine. I know how to add images ect. Main problem are the colours - messed up. I already found out how to export and import palette in GIMP. Problem is that I have to change it manually pixel by pixel:/ Any way to force the program to automatically  optimize image  with my new palette?

Sometimes it's a tricky detail, like for example a few colors near 250 that shouldn't be used for BIGOBJ sprites because they are different in Ufopedia screens than in battle.
Please attach the exact images you want to use, I can have a look, too.

step 1: don't use gimp.
gimp optimizes the palette.
images with optimized palettes are useless in a game that relies this heavily on palette data.

Which program is good to do the job?

Any program that edits in "indexed colors" mode (often called 256-color mode) and has good palette control. ASEprite is pretty good, but I advise Grafx2 better as I'm one of the coders :D

Photoshop also works as long as you set the image mode to Indexed Color. Basically only use programs that give you control over the palette.
