Title: LAN PvP?
Post by: Viaro on December 28, 2013, 04:03:28 am
I know that at least one of the linked games under "Friends" does human v human battles, but I didn't like the graphics nearly as much as those of OpenXcom/Xcom.

I don't know how hard it would be, but I would love a simple pvp addon to OpenXcom. [I assume LAN would be easiest, and probably sufficient, and most fun to play against people you know in person]

[If it is possible, I have a few features to suggest...]

This has been discussed before, and if I recall correctly, it is certainly possible. The issue is there are other priorities at hand, namely getting TFTD to run on the engine.

I can wait :) Even the hope of it happening eventually is exciting.

why not try UFO2000? i hear they're looking for more players ;)
i have no plans to add multiplayer support, short of perhaps a "hot-seat" mode.

I've tested playing UFO2000's hotseat mode, and it shows the complexity is not trivial :
On each player's turn, the game needs to "replay" all actions of the previous turn from the new player's perspective.

Hmm...for some reason I can't get over the graphical style of UFO2000, which is rarely a problem for me. Xcom's art style appeals to me a lot more, and is a lot more colorful. I would rather play Xcom single player than UFO2000 multiplayer, if it came down to it.

The complexity of hot-seat for OpenXcom would be mainly in the programming, right? The player's experience wouldn't be very different whether seeing a replay in hot-seat or seeing real time in LAN.

I'm fairly sure you can play UFO2000 with original game resources, since the standalone ones only came later, but I don't know the specifics.

Install the latest version (beta), choose option "Enlarge battlefield (doubled pixels)" and "Prefer X-COM graphics", and you get this:

Wow, that looks a lot better :)

I might have to try that then, that's a really nice option.

Thanks,

Well, like it was already stated, there are other priorities than having a PvP option.

But you could try your luck at implementing it if you really want it.

Offtopic: Volutar, is that you?
