Title: French "close to original" translation
Post by: Juju Dredd on August 27, 2013, 11:35:53 pm
Bonjour à tous,

As you should know, original game does had the french language. The french language translation for OpenXcom is far better, but it is not the same, and a nostalgic player such as me likes to kill aliens rather than extraterrestres (even though, I know, alien is not French), to throw some leurres électroniques etc...

Of course, "deproving" french translation would be silly, but why not to propose a second French translation, matching the original one?

First question: Is it worth I do it?
Second question: I believe if a string would be missing in the "french old school" translation, the game would use the english string, is there a way it would use the french string if available? (lazy contributor spotted)

You could always take the current french translation as "base" and then just edit it. That way it'd be in this order: your french (original) > the "openxcom" french > english (for untranslated, perhaps new strings)

If you really want to use the original versions, you can just go back in time (https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom/tree/7016cb0665fa5ebed084126f5d167576e3ee7237/bin/DATA/Language).
They'll be missing any new strings, but that can be easily fixed with a diff tool.

Ok, I know how to do it now, but do you think this could interest more than myself and deserve being including in the game?

Feel free to post it here for those that want, but I think having multiple French's included with the game would just be confusing.

It would be confusing if I call it "French" but I would call it "French from vanilla game" or something.
What really bother me is enlarging that long translation list for nothing...
Can we just delete language file to enlighten it?

Hello, I have downloaded the last version of open x-com, the only point of disapointment for me is the fact that when I play TFTD most of the content ingame is in english...
I would like to find back the original/vanilla translation, how can I do that ?

I checked Transifex, and it looks like TFTD is only 65 % translated in French. You can always join the team to help out with the translation. ;) I don't know, where you can find the original translation, though. :c

Don't mind if the menus are not fully translated, as long as the original content is in the original/vanilla french version

OpenXcom has changed too much from vanilla to be able to automatically migrate the original translations. However you can do it manually by copying the original texts into the missing translations in Transifex yourself.
If you have the original TFTD, you can find the texts in GEODATA\FRENCH.DAT and GEODATA\FRENCH2.DAT.

Just FYI, original is from 1995, not 2012.

original is from 1994, and I use the official translation of the 2012 reboot to prevent confusions

Terror from the Deep original is from 1995, and I am not aware of any 2012 reboot.

1994 was UFO, not TFTD... and 2012 remake was also UFO.

I think it's the 1998 Collector's Edition that confuses everyone.
There were also 1999, 2000, 2008 and 2009 releases and also the Steam release
but I don't think they differ from it in any meaningful detail.

I guess it should be stated once and for all that this is the baseline.

At least I don't remember any problems with it.

Have you watched the Australian series 'Ocean Girl" back in the 2nd half of the 90s and early 2000s ?

When I look at season 4, it pretty much remind me of Terror from the deep...
