Title: Iron Man
Post by: TopCat on March 12, 2013, 07:56:27 pm
Iron Man game mode which remove Load/Save buttons from GUI except first dialog (new game , load, options, etc) and auto save on game abort.

It may be enabled on difficulty choosing dialog at game start.

Great idea!
Option "autosaveOnly" could be enabled via options.cfg
"Save" removed, but works only autosave at 00:00 every in-game day (into autosave.sav).
"Load" don't need remove because you always can press "Abort", then "Load".

Always wanted to do)

This function i think it is not necessary, people that like to play Iron Man will do it regardless of the options, i think this simply creates more programming with no beneficial  effects to the player or gameplay.

I am indeed playing openxcom in Ironman mode myself (im in july already). I never did that in de original xcom and I allways regreted it. I have to say that it is pretty good, playing ironman is like almost playing a different game. I make use much more of smoke grenades  ;D ;D. I lose on average between 1 and 2 men in each mission. I have lost a complete crew already and a bad defended base. But my accounts are green and looks like I will be able to finish the game :). Every time I want to play xcom I load it and never save it until the end of the game day (maybe 1 hour?) I know it is a risk because I am playing the latest GIT always but ... I have to say that It has never crashed on me yet. Amazing! The problem is that I became used to play like this and I tried another game (the new 2012 Ufo enemy unknown) and it crashed on me twice already losing like 1 or 2 hours of game in total argg

I am playing IronMan also, and although i save i don't savescum or whatever is call, i just don't want to loose so much time if the game crashes, i do usually use the latest git. In my current game i have actually already lost the game, but due to a bug i was able to continue playing :D. In total i have lost 4 soldiers, i have done 1 Base assault and done about 4 Base defense. I usually save right before a mission and right after a mission.
Next up in my game is a base assault :)

IronMan mode in "options.cfg"  frees you (and me))) from temptation)
Code of the autosave function can be used for QuickSave and QuickLoad functions and hotkeys (in future).

remove temptation!!!!! how dare you :P

Temptation is one of the best things out there :) it keeps you real,
evil you: well we lost too many units let's just reload
good you: No we are playing Iron Man, we need to be truthful
you: I hate this

and that is why you love it :)

We should also make ironman save the game if the game is closed to avoid temptation there, too.

Do you mean autosave when pressed "abort game" button?
I thought about it. It is dangerous. The game has bugs. What to be if player will face with bug?
If we save only at 00:00 every day, then player can replay last day.

I was thinking along the lines of when you press alt-F4 or press the X button, routine closures not crashes. And mainly I was considering the battlescape.
