I've posted it in the "introduce yourself" thread, but it didn't get much attention. It probably deserves own thread and I hope that it'S not a problem.
So what's this about? It's a map of openXcom fans built on the Google Maps API.
Why? Because I think that it's much easier (and more interesting) to look at a map than to read the whole "introduce yourself" thread.
How does it work?
You can either open the map (https://tools.amunak.net/openxcom-map/map.php), see a list of people (https://tools.amunak.net/openxcom-map/list.php) or add yourself to the map (https://tools.amunak.net/openxcom-map/reg.php). I'd really love to see more people on the map. It accepts quite precise coordinates, but of course you don't have to point it precisely on your house. I think that nearby greater city is fine. The point is to be precise at least at country level, so we know approximately how far are others :)

I think better solution would be installing map plugin to our forum.

michal: Oh I see. Seems better, but after looking at some profiles I'd think that it'll be precise at state level at best.
-
Well most people don't really wanna give away their exact location to the whole internet. :P
-
it's interesting to know for SupSuper where the best location is to give a party when 1.0 is released :p I have a feeling it will be somewhere in Poland or Germany. Berlin?

Yes, that's why I say that there's no reason to point it at your doors. On the other hand if you say "I'm from Germany" and you live near the Denmark border, then it's quite misleading. But you can point it to Hamburg for example. That gives a clue at least.

Wow! While zoomed out the pins totally miss the targets! :'(
-
Damn, you're right :/ It shows that you're living in the ocean :P
-
Well I didn't expected this... I thought that it will at least guess the location from the "location" from our profiles.
I don't really see the advantage now. Actually there is one. It is -verified- that the person on the map participates in the openxcom community.
Anyway michal, If you want to run my map on openXcom website, I can send you the script. (if the "pins in ocean" are too big problem)
-
Found a topic about that problem, someone suggested to enlarge pins. I did it.
Does it look better now?

It's still a bit weird. By the way, if it could help you, I can provide lat/lon coords for the pins on my map to save the "effort" for anyone who is already on my map.

I'm not sure which map is better. I've started a pool:

We should decide soon.

Much better! I don't live in the ocean anymore, and the position doesn't seem to change that much as you zoom in :)

There, now you know where to bring your pitchforks. :P
Also shocked most people are from Europe.
