Well, we cannot help you if you don't help us first.

We need a file (a saved game) from you, which will show us what's wrong. Once we see what's wrong, we can fix it...

does the save file have to be on notepad?

1. save your game (button Options, then button Save game) under any name you wish (for example "test") just before the error happens
2. then open your "Documents" folder on your computer and there you will find a folder called "OpenXcom", open it
3. there you find a folder called "xcom1", open it
4. there you should find your save file, it will be called "test.sav" (if you named your save "test")
5. this is the file we need from you
6. please upload that file as attachment into this discussion

If you cannot find that file... tell us which version of OpenXcom are you using.

If you are using Windows Vista and later, you can attach saves by following steps:
1) Press key combination WindowsLogo+R
2) paste
Code: [Select]
%userprofile%\documents\openxcom3) press enter
4) archive content and attach file

Maybe i don't understand anything, but which version of OpenXCom you are using? It's 1.0 Milestone version? Use the latest nightly build and everything will be OK.
I successfully complete mission from your savegame Test.sav.sav, look at your 2 bases, saw 2 billion dollars at balance :) Everything goes fine, nothing crashes.

This is a latest nightly build for this moment
https://openxcom.org/git_builds/openxcom_git_master_2016_04_17_2012.zip

also you can check for latest build by yourself here
https://openxcom.org/git-builds/

I don't see any reason at all to use Milestone 1.0 version, because tons of bugs were fixed since June 13, 2014 in nightly builds. It's almost 2 years old, Carl !

Any luck?

I have tried your save and everything works fine for me.

Something must be wrong with your installation.

First try disabling all mods (Gasmask, Retaliator, and so on...).

If that doesn't help, maybe try re-installing the game completely:
1. uninstall using windows control panel
2. then go into "Program Files "directory and delete entire "OpenXcom" folder
3. then go into "Documents" directory and delete entire "OpenXcom" folder... make sure to backup your saved games first!
4. then install the game fresh again

@g5-freemen: 1.0 Milestone is the latest official version we have. Many players are not computer geeks and are not able to install a nightly snapshot... no matter how easy it may seem to us! Also, even though 1.0 is two years old, it is stable and perfectly playable, I never had any problems with it.

"big  fan of xcom" who can't extract achive with nightly build and add original UFO content to the UFO folder - is not big fan of xcom.

With that logic, "big fan of Freddie Mecury" who is not a gay - is not big fan of Freddie Mercury.

In my mind if you like such an old game with old graphic you have play it before and if you remember it was made in the december of 1993, when almost everybody know something about console, *.exe and some other things.

But ! For the users with hands from .... logic --->>> OpenXCom 2016-04-17 SETUP !!! Download here ->>> https://yadi.sk/d/gsbe4yS9r9C59
(Please don't ask how to download and install the game)
