Title: How I get the mods to run under Lubuntu?
Post by: Ponos on January 15, 2016, 02:06:53 am
Hi there,
I am new here and so happy to find this site and its totally awesome content. Just installed OpenXcom 1.0 and played it for a while! Great. I would love to try some mod, but aren't able to get them running. you have to copy them into a mods folder, right? That doesn't seem to work. What I am doing wrong? I use the Linux distribution Lubuntu.
Thank you in advance!

And to make life even easier for you.

Use one of the following ppa's (instructions are on those pages):

The latter one is mentioned on the downloadsite (https://openxcom.org/git-builds/)

You should not use the 1.0 version (although is marked as "stable") due to the following:

So, as Warboy said, use the nightlies.

Sadly, 1.0 is marked as "stable" since it manages to run, but the nightlies might contain undiscovered major bugs (they are usually fixed in the next nightly) that may prevent them from even starting. This is the price of living on the edge.

You should use one of the PPAs mentioned by R1dO (the winterheart's PPA (https://code.launchpad.net/~winterheart/+archive/ubuntu/openxcom) seems to be more up-to-date with the nightlies), as it is way easier than building from source every time (the source code can be found on GitHub (https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom), if you want to take a shot at compiling it yourself).

Once you get the nightly installed, you need to add the original UFO and/or TFTD data in the mix. You can find some quick instructions on how to do that right here (https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom#installation).

Then you can go to the modportal (https://www.openxcom.com/) and download mods from there.

There are additional instructions on Ufopaedia (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=OpenXcom) (the portal seems to be down ATM).

Ask around on this forum or in the chat (https://openxcom.org/irc-channel/) if you need additional assistance.

Have fun!

BTW Warboy, I think a "stable" version with TFTD and current mod format support is in order...

So... People still play 1.0? O_o Why???

Because it's the first download available and it is advertised as stable.

this, basically.

it's very common for the "uninitiated" to go for the promoted stable version, plus, the term "nightly build" has a bit of a stigma attached.

but let's stay on topic... the nightly build has the better mod support, because that was one of our main focuses moving forward from 1.0, and as such, more mods target the newer version.

I'm looking for a guinea pig...I mean victim...I mean test subject...I mean quality assurance tester to test my content installation scripts and offer improvements and suggestions. For now, they work on linux for me, but I want to make sure they work for others before asking to push them back into the code. I got pointed at you.

Interested? To test it, you'll definitely want to start using the nightlies if you aren't completely familiar with where openx is looking for things. Even if you are, I would recommend that you test after an install anyway.
