20+ years of XCom playing and today i got this for the first time ever. It appeared when I sent my troops to a downed Fighter (mod) crash site. I received some Alien Alloys and nothing else, but I was very surprised to see this. :)
-
I had this a few times, but never with the original game. I believe, that this as been implemented only in openxcom, hasn't it?
-
I had it in original too I think.
Usually when I shot down a very small UFO without destroying it, maybe 1 in 5 chance.

That on the other hand I never had. They were always destroyed. But maybe that's because I never use the cannons.

When a crash mission begins, the only UFO damage is applied to UFO power sources (either blow up or not).

I got this message once, I assumed it was because all the deployed aliens happen to be in the blast radius.

I had that one happen to me in the original as well. It happens in TFTD too.

EDIT: this feature appears on OpenXCom and in the original TFTD, but not in the original UFO.
One easy to check is to see if that text string appears on the original ENGLISH.DAT (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=ENGLISH.DAT) and ENGLISH2.DAT (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=ENGLISH2.DAT) files and their TFTD equivalents, which contains the text strings used on the original game.
Since it isn't present for the original UFO, your memory is playing tricks on all who remember seeing it there. :)

It's nice being right. ;-)

I've rechecked and it actually appears on TFTD, but not UFO :)
-
TFTD I rarely played, as I was often disturbed by techtree-bugs. So about that I wouldn't know...

Yeah, that must be it... I remember it from my early LPs, so it couldn't have been OpenXcom.
Or maybe I am just delusional.

It's a known neural phenomenon - most of our memories are reinvented by our subconscious in order to fit the present. This is also why eye witnesses can be very unreliable.
If you're a diary writer you'll see this when you reread entries from years ago and realize that your current impression of those events is different from when you experienced then and wrote in your diary.

Interesting! I do remember seeing that too, but not while playing OpenXCom. Must be TftD!
What happened in the original if all aliens got killed by the crash? I sort of remember going through the inventory, seeing the map, playing my turn and winning as soon as I press end turn because everything was already dead.
-
Never seen this before. And I've been playing since 94'....

Would the most likely case of this happening not be a vanilla medium scout as a small scout has no power source? All the aliens could get roasted in the medium scout but surely the walls in bigger crafts would spare some of them until you finish them off
-
Medium scout is likely the only vanilla ufo for which this could happen. It's small enough that a large explosion will shred it and all the aliens inside, and the crew is small enough that they might all be in to get shredded. On a large scout, at least one alien should be safely spawned outside.
There are a few modded UFOs to which that could happen, first to come to mind is the old version of the small fighter UFO from Solarius, with 2 power sources, a small footprint and a small crew.

Which it was (see first post, it was a fighter from a mod.) ;D
-
it's a recent(ish) addition, if all the aliens are killed in the power source explosion, this happens, just as it did in tftd, just like hobbes said. we saw no reason not to apply it to ufo as well.

Well it makes total sense :)
Need to make a fun mod were the entire alien crew spawn near the powersources :D
Autorecovery ^^

Wow, it was I who made the Fighter, and I've downed hundreds of them, but never had this total wipeout.
As for the original game, this wouldn't happen because the aliens can only die because of the UFO Power source explosion, and all UFOs are set to have some of its crew be spawned outside. The Fighter is specifically designed to not be like this (because it's a small craft designed for defence, and certainly not for ground missions).
But I wonder what would happen in the original game if it had such a UFO and everyone died inside. Would the game just crash?
-
It would maybe end after the first turn... :)

Yeah, I'd expect them to build in some sort of a fail safe.
PS. Civilian, I hate TFTD too. ;)
