How about enlarging the game's minimap so that a a higher display it can display an overhead view of the entire map?

That would be rad, a zoom in/out button would be awesome too.
I also wouldn't mind a legend along the side. I still forget which color is what after 20 years. :-[

Sounds like a nice idea, but it seems like it would be really complex to make.

For me at least the legend would limit modding. I'm making custom pck/rmp/maps and my scang objects are limited to what's already available, so sometimes I might use a grass tile just because I have something green in my artwork

Good idea ;)

Always learning ;)
In this case, I have another suggestion: at a higher display than original, have the minimap available on the main view like UFO2000 (can be removed by using the arrow keys to size its view). The display can also show your units's LOS by using a shade to display areas out of sight (see pic below). And if there's enough space, display a list of your soldiers with some basic stats.

Hobbs you come up with the greatest ideas! ;D ;D ;D
Anyway I would like to see it placed in the upper right hand corner.

Not for terrain, I mean the blips for items on the ground, dead units, enemies, etc.
