Congratulations to all the contributors to this great game (developers, artists, modders ...)
And ... a little wish ... :)
Would it be possible to be able to select the armor for a soldier from the crew's equipment screen available for transporters at base ?
In the concept:
-1- Be in soldier equipment from one carrier to the base screen
-2- Click on the silhouette of the soldier
-3- Pop-up -> list of available armor
-4- Click / select the armor and return to the screen equipment

+ a patch that allows to go to soldier-base-info (where one can select armour) for original resolution-player
of course only available in craft->equipment->inventory screen (not! in mission preparation)
(including it in basedefense/quickbattle would be very complex to do and not worth the effort)
but i wait till tftd is finished there seems to be somewhat of a feature freeze atm :/
for now do you know Right-click on a soldier in a craft's Armour screen assigns the last selected Armour to the soldier (if possible). (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Hidden_Features_%28OpenXcom%29)

I always found it annoying and odd you couldn't equip armor.

maybe you meant something like this
The armor section is supposed to be selectable so you can just change armor from this screen.
EDIT: well this is the battlescape version the geoscape had another color with buttons now that i remember.

Running to and fro between equipment and armor screens is one of the most annoying things in OXcom. In vanilla there was no problem, as each new armor was vastly superior than the previous, but nowadays with so many mods that give a more intricate selection of armor suits so you want to pick the one best suited for soldier's role... and these armor weight issues...

Agreed, sometimes, simplicity is better.

That's wasn't what I meant. I meant the original interface was good enough for vanilla, but nowadays it needs some (as subtle as possible) upgrade in this area. R-click on a soldier's shilouette to bring up a popup window with armor selection would be the best solution alas it appears to be also very hard to code (popup menus not supported by Battlescape palette or sth, I don't know the exact details).

the inventory screen in the base is done in oxc with a trick
the screen is part of a battlescape
if you open the inventory in the base "half a battle" is generated in the background and you just make a pre misson weapon assignment
during "pre misson weapon assignment" there cant be armor change because you are on a mission
i got around to that by recreating the pseudo-battle if you change the armor
thats of course not possible with real battles preparation
making armor interchangeable without this workaround is a lot more work
