Title: Mod Suggestion-Play As The Aliens

Surely a mod where you play as the Aliens, against XCOM and earth, would be a great mod to play.

What do you think?

No, there no much fun. Playing as aliens in classic XCOM is boring. You have advanced tech, psionics, terror units. What humans have at begining? One base, basic tech and 10 rockies. Once you find XCOM base (and this can happen very soon) - you won.

Yeah, the whole point of X-Com (and any strategy game in general) is to win a battle against all odds.

Simply switching sides will blow all the fun out of the game, because is too easy to win. You just need to find that base and deploy one or two terror units... against the standard human weapons they are invulnerable.

Would one begin as the Sectoids, with say, plasma pistols, and research trees for aliens they grow, better weapons, etc?

A mirror game can only be interesting if some things are balanced to be challenging, and the focus placed on interesting game elements. As I see it:
The aliens win by successfully overthrowing earthling authority - by infiltration (especially in beginning when only scout ships can be sent) or outright display of force (a country openly surrenders from your battleships)
From their standpoint it's mostly management/strategy on how to spend resources : sneak in an advance base (resources, information, logistics), openly terrorize a hapless country (resources and a step towards victory), actively search those pesky XCOM (reduce opposition), study earthling brains in order to tune our psionic attacks (military perk) ?
Crushing XCOM or winning all major countries is victory, losing Cydonia is loss. But there should probably be an other condition of defeat, when earth defense "holds" and depletes all the resources the alien can send at them.

One way of making this harder for alien is starting point. I think best time for that is after mars fall :)
All tech and supply was destroyed by humans, you have only left some backup bases that are constantly raided by humans.

you could make it that the invaders are max tech humans and you are defending yourself so your random troops would be random aliens  and make the globe mars (is doable) and all the cities make them martian cities and change the sprites to mars like. etc. otherwise game would play out the same . and change all ufopedia.
