Hi!
I have a slim installation of Win XP (32 bit) as a virtual machine where I tried to install Openxcom. The problem is Windows refuses to even run OpenXcom.exe. Do I have to install any aditional dlls/libraries?

You need to have a copy of the original game, OpenXcom uses the resources from that game, you know GUI art sounds all that good stuff. if you don't have one Steam has them for like 5 bucks or something

I have the original game (I've put the folders where they should be).
When running OpenXcom.exe from command prompt I get:
"The system cannot execute the specified program."
When clicking it I get:
"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

Sounds like you're missing some important system dependency (DLLs etc.). Sadly these Windows errors are incredibly vague, but you might find more details by checking your Windows event log (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427) for more details.
This should be already included with the game, but just in case, try installing the VS2010 Redistributable (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555).

Installing VS2010 didn't solve it but installing VS2008 did.

Weird, maybe SDL was built with VS2008.
